Petrel (sports society)

"Burevestnik" is an all-Union voluntary sports society that united students and the teaching staff of the USSR universities. Created in 1957.

The history of student sports in Russia begins at the end of the 1890s. In 1904, there were 40 student sports clubs in Russia. In 1911, 13 student sports clubs of St. Petersburg formed the first student league. She organized competitions between university teams in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Since 1929, the USSR has introduced compulsory teaching of physical education in universities. In the same year, the Proletstud Central Bureau held the first all-Union student competitions.

From the 1930s to 1957, student sports were organizationally included in various departmental sports societies, - DSO "Medic", DSO "Teacher", DSO "Molniya", etc.

In 1957, the All-Union Sports Society "Burevestnik" was created, which included all the universities and technical schools of the USSR. It included DSO: "Burevestnik", "Molniya" (communications workers), "Science" (employees of higher education and science). Then Trud, Medic and Iskra were added. At first, in addition to students, its ranks also included employees of state institutions and state trade. By the beginning of the 70s, the society had become "purely" student. It began to unite only students of higher educational institutions, teachers, university staff.

Until the early 1990s, all student sporting events were held solely by this society.

Since 1959, the society has been a member of the International University Sports Federation and represented the interests of the USSR there.

As of 1970, there were more than 600 student clubs in SO "Burevestnik", where more than 1.5 million athletes went in for sports, in addition to 70 thousand teachers and researchers. The most popular sports were sports games (over 300 thousand people), sports tourism (150 thousand), athletics (120 thousand) and winter sports (110 thousand people). As of the same year, the society had 50 honored masters of sports, 6 thousand masters of sports, 60 thousand candidates for master of sports and athletes of the 1st category. At the beginning of the 1970s, higher educational institutions had 40 stadiums, 1250 gymnasiums, 28 swimming pools and 550 sports and recreation camps.

The annual membership fee was 30 kopecks.

In 1987, the Burevestnik Society was transferred to the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. In the early 1990s, Burevestnik ceased to exist.
