Sport catamaran

Everyone, at least once dreamed of “going sailing”. Sailing catamarans, boats and attracts lovers of travel and walks, no one can resist such an unforgettable kind of rest. And sports excitement and a sea of colorful impressions push people to engage in professional sailing. In this article we will look at the cherished dream of many!

Features of sailing catamarans

In addition to the design features due to the presence of two hulls (for example, a central tarpaulin or mesh deck-springboard, double rudder, headstay sprue), there are other characteristic differences from single-hull racing yachts associated with controlling the catamaran at high speeds ... The sails of the catamaran are much flatter, the mainsail has battens through the entire width, ensuring its rigidity. Both the mainsail and the staysail are controlled using a complex system of blocks, which greatly facilitates their setup.

A profiled and turning mast is installed on the catamaran for more efficient air flow around the sail. The technique of sailing on a catamaran has some differences from sailing on a monohull dinghy. Since catamarans are more stable than monohull yachts, it is easier to turn fordewind with them.

Sailing catamaran sailing

The catamaran steering technique largely depends on its type. The perceived sense of stability and safety of double-hull yachts is often deceiving. When steering a catamaran at high speeds, the ability to concentrate and a quick reaction is necessary, so catamarans are too difficult for novice yachtsmen. Steering a catamaran on a course usually requires minimal rudder shifting, but considerable effort is required to make an overstag or jog.

Sharp Course Swimming

When sailing on a catamaran, the easiest course is Gulfwind. In this case, the apparent wind blows at a sharper angle than the true one, and the sheets of the sails choose "tighter". The main sail control is the boom-sheet slider, which allows you to adjust the angle at which the sail is facing the wind without distorting its shape. Many helmsmen of catamarans operate the sails using only the boom-sheet slider, leaving the boom-sheet itself the role of the boom guy. Both centerboards are tuned in the same way as on monohull sailing dinghies. However, they can be operated independently by changing the depth of the centerboard either leeward or windward hull. The position of the centerboards is extremely important: if they are too low, the speed drops; if too raised, the catamaran drifts sideways. The distribution of the crew's weight should prevent the hulls from being trimmed forward or stern, and the windward hull should barely touch the water surface.

Cool to the Wind

On the side-hauled course, the boom-sheet slider is shifted to the catamaran DP, and the leeward centerboard is lowered first.

The helmsman steers the catamaran using the apparent wind indicator, trying to keep the boat at high speed rather than heading steeply into the wind. If the fast ib falls, it is necessary to roll the catamaran into a full hauled and then again lead to the wind. The sailor and the helmsman should sit side by side to provide the least resistance to the wind, while the windward hull of the catamaran should lightly touch the surface of the water.

Sailing catamarans

Summer, heat and great weather make people want to get closer to the reservoir. Someone prefers swimming, but for someone it is preferable to swim on special means, which allow not only to relax, but also to go on a tourist trip. For this you will definitely need a catamaran. The search for a suitable transport is determined by the individual needs of the buyer, however, from our article you can learn about the basic principles of a successful purchase, as well as study the rating of the best catamarans.

The variety of goods is directly related to the purpose of purchasing transport, i.e. some catamarans have their own design features that determine the ease of use.

Sailing ships

These products are presented in two variations:

  • With a sail.
  • With sail and engine.

The latest models are more versatile. They are capable of accelerating to high speeds in the absence of wind. In the first case, users are dependent on weather conditions. Such vessels will not allow going far out to sea, therefore their use is determined by the strength of the structure and its dimensions.

The cost of such goods is lower than that of yachts, and the execution and registration of documents does not cause difficulties.

When buying sailing catamarans, we advise you to carefully study the features and capabilities of the boats. There are stable and dimensional models that allow for long walks. There are also lightweight versions on sale - ideal for short pleasure trips.

Sailing boats require a lot of space, so they are not suitable for sailing on a small lake.

Expeditionary vessels

They will appeal to fans of active, but not extreme sports. These catamarans are also suitable for fishermen and experienced swimmers who swim far from the shore. This transport will withstand a long rafting on the river, but the reservoir should not be too difficult and dangerous.

Such models are characterized by simplicity and strength, and their carrying capacity allows you to take impressive luggage with you. There is also space for passengers.

The best river rafting in the Adventure Club

Rafting on catamarans has been presented on our website since 2009, instructors have already conducted more than a thousand water trips. During this time, they have developed more than 50 routes for rafting on catamarans on rough rivers of varying complexity. In this review, we have collected the best routes. From the simplest, such as rafting on Shuya in Karelia, available for participants with children, to the most difficult routes of 4-5 grade, in Altai and in the Sayan Mountains.

Training on catamarans in Losevo

It is not for nothing that rafting is a popular type of outdoor activity. See for yourself, the advantages are obvious: you don't need to carry a heavy backpack, you don't need to think about organization, equipment, products either, there is no need to look for options for throwing onto the river, and you don't even need to collect like-minded people. All this has already been done by the instructors. And they did well, doing this for many years and being professionals in this matter. Read the reviews of the hikes that appear on each page of the route.

Rafting and rafting have long been synonymous in the modern language. The instructors presented on our website organize rafting on catamarans and kayaks, because they consider trips on these ships more interesting than on rafts. Because: on a catamaran, all participants participate in steering the ship, the catamaran is less raft, the catamaran is more maneuverable.

Hiking instructors teach tourism! And they conduct trainings on catamarans and kayaks. The instructors will teach you everything you need to know. They will teach you how to operate a catamaran. They will teach the basics of boating techniques. They will teach you to overcome both thresholds and yourself. If you want to find out what hiking is, learn new things and find new real friends, please contact us! Expand your boundaries and make your dreams come true!

Training on catamarans on the Losevsky threshold for the weekend is designed to prepare participants for difficult rafting. By participating in workouts, you can quickly level up and get the most out of awesome challenging hikes. We also have training camps in Losevo for a week.

- easy catamaran routes, great choice for beginners

Simple routes are recommended for exploring rafting, for outdoor recreation, for participants with children. In such trips, a greater percentage of 6-seater catamarans are used in relation to 4-seater. Standard set of ships for a group of 3 to-6 + 4 to-4 + to-2. Catamarans are equipped with outboard motors for overcoming lakes, which are inevitably many on simple Karelian routes.

In June, all simple routes become more difficult due to the more water in the rivers, and they can be classified as medium difficulty routes, which are optimal for participants with little experience in water trips, but also beginners with them will cope if they prepare a little.

Rafting on Shuya in Karelia, one of the simpler routes. Karelian classics, 7 days of rafting. It is warm here relative to other Karelia, about the same as in St. Petersburg. This is the most popular route in Karelia. There is a lot of water in the river, but in summer the rapids are weak. The main thing in them is not to get stuck on stones. There is still fish in the river, more of it in the lakes. A good and varied route to start your rafting experience.

At the threshold of Big Tolly at the end of the route, you can feel the whole drive of the rafting at any time.

Catamaran Types and characteristics Differences from the yacht and features

A catamaran is a ship with two decks connected by a bridge into a single structure. Although sometimes the deck may be absent - it is replaced by a metal net (as a rule, this is typical for sports catamarans). The name of the boat refers to one of the dialects of the population of southern India - the word "kattumaram" was used to refer to two interconnected logs.

The first devices resembling a modern catamaran appeared more than one thousand years ago. They were used by the inhabitants of Oceania, as well as the Romans, installing ladders on them to storm enemy fortresses.

Translated from the Polynesian language, catamaran means "raft". The homeland of such ships is the coast of India. Since ancient times, the fishermen of Madras have knitted (and continue to do so to this day) stable and light rafts of three to nine logs under sail. The log in the center is the thickest, its nose is pointed and raised up, which makes the raft look like a pie. The Indians masterfully control such a vessel, sail on it in any weather and even drag it over the sandy sediments at the mouths of the rivers.

A vessel of two identical logs under sail initially developed a speed of up to 37 km/h. After numerous developments and modifications, the motor version appeared. Moreover, experiments on the creation of such a floating craft were carried out almost simultaneously in England and in Russia. In 1834, a two-hull boat for boat trips was launched on the Neva.

Catamarans were used only for walking for almost 50 years, until in 1874 a ferry called "Catalea" appeared. It transported cargo and passengers across the English Channel. In the 20th century. the developers of the catamarans did a tremendous job and the production of these ships became widespread, many types and designs were created. Currently, catamarans are common vessels that are in great demand and perform more than one function.

Nowadays catamarans are found everywhere. Especially often they can be seen near reservoirs, where they are used for walks and entertainment. Usually these boats are equipped with pedals, so they do not develop fast speed.

Catamarans yachts, fast vessels capable of accelerating up to 250 km/h, are also actively spreading. They have both a sail and a motor, are serial and are made to order. The materials are aluminum, steel and multicomponent compounds. It was these catamarans that led to the emergence of powerboat Formula 1 - a new sport discipline.

The name speaks for itself - such a catamaran is driven by a motor according to the same principle as a motor boat. Its main advantage is good speed, which has led to the great popularity of this vessel and the constant increase in demand for it.

The design of a motor catamaran is simple: two hulls with a bridge in the middle and a motor that drives the raft. It is ideal for sea and river tourist trips, for fishing and the construction of various water structures. They often host floating cafes, restaurants and temporary marinas.

The speed of such a vessel is developed by the sail and can reach 250 km/h. This makes it suitable not only for walking, but also for sports. It has such design features as:

  • Double rudder for better handling.
  • Full battens of the mainsail to increase the rigidity of the boat.
  • Pivoting mast for good air flow around the sail.

Varieties of sailing catamarans

Sailing catamarans in a wide variety are increasingly presented at yacht exhibitions. In our article "Advantages of a catamaran over a yacht", we analyzed in detail all the advantages of a catamaran over a monohull: this is an increased deck, and good stability, and as a result, less rolling. Catamarans are easier to handle and more maneuverable.

Large living space and increased comfort make them a welcome purchase for a relaxing break. Today, the world of catamarans is a huge selection of boats from large cruising catamarans, which are equipped with everything for long stays on the water, to sports catamarans. The second are the lightest vessels, devoid of everything that can add weight. Their goal is to set new records and win competitions.

Performance or racing catamarans

Modern sailing has an increasing trend towards racing on high-speed catamarans. A catamaran requires more experience, physical strength compared to a monohull yacht. Not every beginner athlete is capable of handling control. The crew of a sports catamaran usually consists of one or two people.

As we mentioned, sport catamarans are extremely lightweight. They may lack furniture and are not suitable for prolonged stay on the water. A separate class of racing catamarans is high-grade boats capable of speeds up to 250 km/h and above. These are boats of water-powered Formula 1, or class 1 marine boats.

Racing catamarans can have a number of additional characteristics: increased protection of the cockpit, the ability to quickly abandon the boat in the event of an accident or overturn, as well as the presence of autonomous breathing under water. The hulls of high-speed boats are built by specialized firms - Victory, Tencara, CUV, Cigarette.

Passenger Catamarans

Sailing cruise catamarans are quite another matter. Here speed has been sacrificed for increased comfort; these are full-fledged apartments on the water. Stable, spacious, with large, bright cabins and private showers, cruising catamarans are designed for a relaxing and unforgettable seaside holiday.

Large catamarans are also used as passenger ships on closed seas. And recently, even aviation has been quite good competition, plying between the islands and delivering passengers from point A to point B. There is practically no rolling on the catamaran, and it is impossible to turn the catamaran, which guarantees your safety.

Cruise catamarans are produced by several shipbuilding companies. The most famous are Lagoon and Bali. In the SAILME fleet there are two Lagoon catamarans - a small 4-cabin Lagoon 380 and a large luxury Lagoon 52F for 12 people. Both are available for rent. And on the Lagoon 52F catamaran in December 2019 we will go on a great trip to the Caribbean.

Catamaran records

In 2017, Italians Vittorio and Nico Milnri crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a catamaran in 11 days, 1 hour and 9 minutes and set a new world record. The result was better than the previous record by 10 hours 16 minutes, which no one could break for 10 years. The average crossing speed was 17.83 kilometers per hour.
