Grotesque is a font class that appeared in 1816 in England. Initially, it was used in the headlines of advertising posters to attract attention, because it contrasted well with the usual typeface at that time. The emergence of the grotesque was associated with the Industrial Revolution and the style that formed thanks to it. And the dissimilarity of the grotesque was a natural stage in the development of the type as a whole.

Let's deal with this family. To make it easier to navigate grotesques, there are 4 large classes:

  • old grotesque;
  • geometric grotesque;
  • neo-grotesque;
  • humanistic grotesque.

Industrial Revolution and Victorian Style

England in the 19th century becomes the locomotive of the industrial revolution. Balancing between tradition and reform, restraint and eclecticism, the 19th century in England became a time of reform. The development of industry, the construction of large factories - all this related to the first stage of the industrial revolution. As you know, changes are usually preceded by long decades of accumulation and insignificant movement, and then there is a sharp jump. Many people were not ready for it - just like the antiqua common at that time.

Grotesque reflected the spirit of the times much more accurately, because its idea was to unify the font. The antiqua, with its contrasting and emasculated outline, seemed out of place and outdated. We can say that with the advent of the sans serif, serifs as a type of type ceased to develop.

Old Grotesque

This is the name of the first grotesque that originated in the Victorian era. Although it is devoid of serifs, it still looks very lively and handwritten, especially when compared with the later grotesques. One of the most significant, though not the first, is Akzidenz Grotesk. It has small extensions in place of the serifs (as a reference to the serif), the descenders are rather short, and the uppercase letters seem too wide (in comparison with the lowercase ones).

William Thorogood, 1832, fragment of the catalog

During this period, in addition to the grotesque, there was a so-called mutation of fonts - the superbold Fate Face, also known as slab or Egyptian, appeared. All of these mutations were partly due to the eclecticism of the time, partly due to the abundance of print advertising - handwritten lettering appeared thanks to all kinds of street signs.

Another well-known old-style grotesque is News Gothic. It is more industrial, modern and lighter in style than its predecessor, Franklin Gothic. Of the distinctive features - the uppercase Q sign has a tail not in the aperture, and the t top is not obtuse, but obtuse. News Gothic has a fairly open form of signs, which makes it easy to read and light. The creator of the typeface is Morris Fuller Benton.
