Diving Features

The beauty of underwater landscapes has become the reason for the development of a new sport - diving. Having plunged into the water element, at least once, the diver becomes forever attached to this activity and this is not surprising. Our planet has many unexplored territories, especially its watery part. And the depths of the sea hide in themselves so many mysteries that they will be enough for more than one generation change. But it's not just secrets that attract curious researchers.

Diving Definition

Diving is scuba diving with an apparatus that carries a supply of air or other mixture of gases for breathing. Modern scuba gear can provide 12 hours or more underwater.

Diving is divided into 4 main types:

  • Recreational - limited to 40 meters deep type of diving. Designed for entertainment and recreation;
  • Sports - based on recreational diving, a sport that includes 4 disciplines: a) obstacle course; b) combined swimming; c) lifting loads up to 6 kg; d) night diving.
  • Technical - the characteristics of this type of diving are diverse. Here are just a few of them: a) diving to a depth of more than 40 m; b) decompression dive; c) ice diving; d) diving with more than one gas mixture.
  • Professional - characterized by diving work.

There is also a method of holding your breath called freediving, but this can be classified as a recreational type.

Underwater hazards

Water is a hostile element for most mammals. We are not adapted for breathing in the aquatic environment, so the main danger when diving is the lack of gas mixture. There is also the possibility of gas poisoning, decompression sickness, drowning and barotrauma. All these terrible words are not an empty phrase, but such horrors do not happen often.

In addition to your own carelessness, which can lead to the above cases, you should be wary of the touch of poisonous plants and fish. The main thing to remember is to listen carefully to the pre-dive briefing.

At all resorts in the world, instructors talk about possible dangers and how to avoid them. By following all the recommendations, your dive will turn into an unforgettable, enjoyable trip.

“There is no reason why a disabled diver should only be a passenger in a diving club ...

If half of our clubs accepted one disabled person and taught him how to dive, that would be a fantastic achievement. ”

This call was made in 1974 by Nicholas Flemming, an internationally renowned underwater archaeologist, at the British Underwater Society (BSAC) conference.

The story of the history of diving for people with disabilities in Russia has to start with foreign practice, since it was this practice that became the source of the discovery that diving is available for Russian disabled people.

45 years ago, Nicholas gave guidance to UK diving club leaders on how to teach diving to people with disabilities. A few months earlier, in July 1974, he, together with the doctor Yehuda Melamed, conducted the world's first training course for disabled divers. The participants in this course were six veterans of the Israeli Armed Forces, who were seriously injured: leg amputations, various spinal injuries that led to paralysis.

Nicholas Fleming knew perfectly well what he was talking about and what he was doing. In 1969, as a result of a car accident, he was paralyzed from the lower back. But for the young underwater archaeologist to continue scuba diving was an urgent need and the meaning of life. In 1970-73. he researched diving opportunities for people with disabilities. He tested the diving technique on himself, following the requirements of BSAC standards as much as possible. In 1974, Nicholas presented his handicapped diving training course to BSAC Vice President Alex Flinder.

So, Fleming and Melamed, being themselves keen divers, in 1974 opened a new stage in the development of diving - training in diving for people with disabilities.

Around this time, in 1975, young James Gatacre hosted the first disability diving course in the United States at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).

As with Fleming, the topic of diving and disability was personally close to James: in 1972, while attending college, he injured his right hand, which left her partially paralyzed. James started scuba diving in 1973 with the goal of psychological rehabilitation to regain his self-esteem, damaged by the fact that he became "different."

What he started as a research project on the UCI campus, where Jim Gatacre studied biology and sociology, later became the HSA (Handicapped Scuba Association) - the largest and most reputable association for training divers with disabilities in the world.

And at that time in Russia, which was part of the Soviet Union, nothing like this was done for citizens with disabilities in the field of diving, and in principle could not be done.

"Civil" scuba diving began to develop in the USSR in the early 60s. It took place through DOSAAF - the Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force and Navy. The goal of DOSAAF is to help strengthen the country's defense capability and prepare the working people to defend the socialist Fatherland. Obviously, the disabled could not have a place in the ranks of Soviet scuba divers:

Scuba diving, scuba diving, along with some other sports, is of great importance for the mass preparation of pre-conscription and draft youth for service in the Soviet Army and the Navy, as well as for the national economy.

What domestic and inbound tourism will look like in 2020 Old and new year pain points. January 6, 2020 09:00 Summing up the results of the year, Profi edition. ravel asked the experts what

A rare person who has dived at least once is able to forget about his impressions and refuse to further explore the underwater beauty.

What does diving mean?

The word "diving" appeared in the Russian speech not so long ago, but it has become firmly established by those people who, when choosing a travel destination, prefer islands and coastal cities. Translated from English diving means "diving".

A wave of fashion for this sport poured into Russia just a few decades ago, but the first divers were known back in the days of Herodotus, and diving appeared in foreign countries in the 50s of the last century.

What is diving?

We can say that this lesson opens up a new wonderful world for the diver. For thousands of years it has been close to people and waited for it to be discovered. However, even at the current moment of technology development, we know very little about it. Only some of his secrets were revealed to the diver. Others continue to beckon, motivating thousands of divers to explore the ocean depths. Diving is a vivid travel experience, meeting like-minded people, an unforgettable diving experience, and active rest.

Perhaps the most striking opportunity it provides to the diver is the feeling of almost complete weightlessness and absolute freedom of movement. On land, we can move backward, forward, left and right, and when diving, it is also added up and down. This can only be experienced in space, where gravity has no power over a person. This type of recreation is developing very actively. Many courses have been created where you can take diving training. They will tell you about all the strict rules and requirements to ensure the safety of the diver.

Tips for beginners

Based on my experience, I can give some advice to those who really want to try scuba diving. Here are five key ones:

  • The main thing is not to be afraid. The worst thing has already happened to you - you were born into the world. Now only fun and new interesting hobbies.
  • Unquestioningly obey the instructor and carefully watch and remember what is said and shown during the instruction.
  • Remember what the scuba gear consists of, how and what is attached to it, when it is unscrewed or vice versa, it is twisted, because your life depends on the knowledge of equipment!
  • Learn sign language. At first glance, it seems easy and ridiculous, but in an environment close to combat, without knowing special signs, you can simply get confused and mislead your instructor.
  • Always keep in sight the instructor or badi partner (the diver you are diving with) in order to provide assistance, if necessary, or get it yourself.

And then I would like to tell you more about why these rules are important, share my diving experience and tell you how to feel like a fish in water when you are in a diving suit, a vest and with a huge aluminum container behind your back ...

Why coaching for beginners is important
