Travelers have their own international holiday - World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27. The holiday was established on September 27, 1979 by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization. The celebration is timed to the end of the tourist season in the Northern Hemisphere and to the beginning - in the Southern Hemisphere. In honor of the 40th Day of Tourism "Around the World" recalls interesting facts related to this phenomenon.
The world's first tourist trip took place in 1841. It was organized by Thomas Cook, a 33-year-old former Baptist preacher and active fighter against drunkenness prevailing in England at that time. It was at his insistence that a special train carried 570 workers along the scenic route between Leicester and Loughborough.
The experience was successful: Cook was allowed to organize recreational (and rather budget) trips further. This is how the world's first travel agency was born. Cook developed routes to many European cities, came up with a tour to America - after 5 years he had 3 million clients. The agency created by Thomas Cook, named the Thomas Cook Group, became one of the world's largest travel service providers and operated until the end of September 2019, when the company filed for bankruptcy.
Tourism benefits the local economy, but can also have a negative impact, especially when crowds have destroyed ancient structures or ecosystems. Therefore, the authorities of certain regions deliberately block visitors from accessing certain attractions. So, recently, the Philippine Boracay was closed for tourists, in 2016 - several famous Thai islands. In 2018, access to the legendary island of Phi Phi, where Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed, was filmed for four months.
And the authentic and little-known kingdom of Bhutan until 1974 did not let anyone in at all, protecting its culture and nature. It was possible to get there only at the personal invitation of the royal family (that is, in fact, not at all). Even today, the fee for staying in Bhutan is high, as are the prices for tours for vacationers. Moreover, you can stay on the territory of the state for no more than 15 days.
In France, the Lascaux cave was closed for tourists, where unique examples of primitive painting have been preserved. It turned out that the ancient drawings are destroyed by carbon dioxide exhaled by tourists. More than half a century ago, the French authorities created an absolute copy of Lascaux, and now only scientists are allowed into the real cave. In Iceland, visitors will not be allowed to the island of Surtsey, which was formed after the eruption of an underwater volcano just a few decades ago. The reason for the ban is scientific research.
The planet is full of conventionally non-tourist places that still attract travelers' interest. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza Strip. Or, for example, Somalia. Everyone knows that there are full of pirates, and there is no state as such, but there are only a few scattered unrecognized republics that are constantly at war with each other. But in Ethiopia and Yemen they still give visas here, at least it's not so difficult to get to Somaliland.
Aborigines can also pose a threat. For example, travelers are strongly advised to stay away from North Sentinel Island (Adaman Islands) because the wild tribes living there are not at all eager to communicate with the outside world. Moreover, just a little - they are the first to attack and can brutally kill anyone who dares to appear on their territory.
Interest in learning new, unknown, immersion in the natural world, finding new friends, active recreation - all this contributes to the development of tourism. People have always loved to travel, and the desire to change, at least for a while, is inherent in the genes. It is not surprising that on September 27, starting in 1983, Russia has celebrated World Tourism Day.
The World Tourism Organization proclaims the holiday motto every year:
The main goal of the event is to promote travel, because it is not only entertainment and recreation: the tourism industry has an impact on the world economy, contributes to the development of international relations. In some countries and regions, it is the main source of income for residents and the state budget.
The holiday was established in 1979 by the World Tourism Organization (WTO), located in the UN structure. The date of the celebration is associated with the end of the tourist season in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning in the Southern Hemisphere, when many people think about travel. Every year, the WTO proclaims the motto of the Day, which emphasizes the importance of the holiday in the development of relations between peoples.
The holiday dates back to 1979. A meeting of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization was held in the city of Torremolinos (Spain). As a result, it was decided to establish the World Tourism Day. In a short time, he gained wide popularity in many countries of the world. In the Soviet Union, the event began to be celebrated in 1983.
