International Forum "Rural Tourism in Russia"

On August 3-4 of this year, the II International Forum of Rural Tourism started in Belgorod. The forum was held as part of the implementation of the Federal Target Program "Development of domestic and inbound tourism in the Russian Federation (2011-2018)".

Autumn is a curious time for the tourism industry: if the heat on the beaches subsides, then in the countryside, on the contrary, the hot season is approaching. Indeed, in the middle latitudes, and then in the European south, it is time for the harvest, which attracts lovers of agricultural tourism with the greatest zeal. And he, according to statistics, will compete with sea resorts in the near future.

This was expected. Silence, solitude, measured lifestyle - we have lost all this in the process of urbanization and now we perceive it as exotic. The answer to the desire to "return to earth", at least for a while, getting rid of the fuss and stress, was the rest on the farms.

Under the guise of agritourism, travel companies offer a variety of programs, for example, family vacations in the countryside

If in the XX century escape from cities was typical for hippies, downshifters and other informals, and everyone else went for the summer "to the village, to his aunt, in the wilderness, to Saratov" from lack of money, now it is like " escapism "took shape in an independent sector of the travel industry. It attracts with its healing effect, familiarization with local traditions, obtaining practical skills and much more: the market offers a variety of travel formats. In addition, prices attract - quite often an agricultural tour is cheaper than a trip to the sea or an excursion program.

But if in Europe this direction has been developing for decades, then in Russia they started talking about agritourism at the official level recently. Climate, distance, mentality, depressed village - all these factors hinder its development in our country. The Profil experts believe that the main obstacle is the overregulation of the industry and the lack of state support. According to them, if you give Russian farmers an impulse, the effect can exceed all expectations - both for the development of the tourism industry and for the rise of the village as a whole.

According to the UN World Tourism Organization, of the 700 million people who travel annually, 20-30% choose rural tourism, providing about a quarter of the income of the global travel industry. More accurate data is available for the European Union, the authorities of which calculate the type of accommodation chosen by tourists. In 2017, it was reported that 36.1% of travelers stayed in rural areas, which is more than in large (33.8%) and small (30%) cities.

In foreign studies, this trend is described as the replacement of three Ss by three Ls in the global tourism agenda: if traditionally the minds of vacationers were owned by the sun, sea and sand (sun, sea, sand), now preferences are shifting towards the landscape , leisure and learning (landscape, leisure, learning). The target audience of the “new” tourism is a metropolitan resident, educated and well-off enough to think about ecology, healthy lifestyles and proper nutrition.

The main direction of agritourism is associated with the "personal" comprehension of the local way of life - that is, with the personal participation of a tourist in rural labor. After all, what kind of life in nature is without a peasant economy? And there is work in it for every taste: harvesting in orchards and vegetable gardens, looking after the stables and apiary, grazing sheep and fishing. This is how agritourism was born in North America and Australia, where the ranches began to accept students while away the holidays. But it really flourished in Europe, literally falling on fertile soil: the agrarians of France, Spain, Italy do not know the end of those who want to watch the collection of olives and grapes, feel the atmosphere of old cheese factories and mills.

At the same time, such tourism is historically associated with the development of organic farms, where natural fertilizers and traditional farming methods are used - without pesticides, growth hormones and other chemicals. As Profil was told in the National Organic Union, "clean" farms appeared almost simultaneously with rural hotels - in the 1960-1970s, then their number grew synchronously by 10-12% per year, today both in Europe about 500 thousand. In France, there are 35 thousand farms with mini-hotels, in Italy - 10 thousand, in England the number of guest places in such estates reaches 120 thousand

“Large agricultural holdings do not need tourists,” explains the executive director of the union, Oleg Mironenko. - They are tailored for mass production, because you need to issue a large volume in order to keep the price low. Plus the issue of safety: where there is a lot of overcrowding of animals, any microbe will mow down the entire farm. Therefore, they are limited from contact with people. Sometimes the farmer even puts a camera, monitoring the situation remotely, so as not to appear himself once again. But small farms, where 20 layers and a couple of cows, prefer the opposite situation. In fact, agritourism has developed due to the fact that Europeans are concerned about healthy eating. It is expensive on store shelves, plus the buyer wants to see the manufacturer and make sure of its reliability. Therefore, people went to the farms, and guest houses began to appear there. For a farmer, this is a triple income: accommodation of guests, food, distribution of products. It is much more convenient than taking the goods to the city yourself. "

Travel agencies also include master classes in beekeeping and other crafts in the concept of "agritourism"

It is customary to distinguish between two types of agrotour - near and far. In the first case, we are talking about a weekend trip to the nearest region, in the second - about traveling to another country. The second type seems unusual, because traditionally people go to distant lands to look at popular sights. “In Europe, where everyone has already visited each other, you can afford to cross several countries for the sake of rest in the village,” Mironenko notes. “Gradually, Russians who actively travel to the EU are beginning to prefer rural areas to capitals.”
