Surgery is the only method that allows a patient to fully recover from stomach cancer. In most cases, the treatment of stomach cancer is carried out in a complex and the operation is used together with other methods of treatment, such as chemotherapy, radiation and targeted therapy. We will discuss the different types of surgeries that can be performed for stomach cancer.
Endoscopic mucosal resection
This method is the most gentle: the operation is performed without external incisions - using an endoscope, which is inserted into the stomach through the mouth, pharynx and esophagus. Endoscopic resection is used only in the early stages of gastric cancer, when the likelihood of tumor metastasis to the lymph nodes is very low.
Treatment of stomach cancer in Israel with partial gastrectomy (removal of part of the stomach) is carried out in cases where the tumor has spread to only part of the stomach. After such an operation, the rest of the stomach retains its function. In some cases, part of the esophagus or small intestine may also be removed, as well as nearby lymph nodes and other tissues to which the cancer has spread.
In Israel, this operation is usually performed using laparoscopy - through 3-4 small punctures of the abdominal wall.
This operation involves the complete removal of the stomach. It will be performed in cases where the cancer has spread so much that it is impossible to save part of the stomach. The surgeon connects the end of the esophagus to the small intestine to allow the free passage of food.
In Israel, full and partial gastrectomy operations can be performed using the Da Vinci robotic surgeon. Robotic surgery differs from conventional laparoscopy in increased accuracy, low risk of complications, and faster recovery.
When the tumor cannot be removed completely, the following minimally invasive surgical procedures may be performed to relieve cancer symptoms:
