2021 declared the International Year of Vegetables and Fruits

At the end of 2017, France, Spain and the United States received a record number of tourists, reports The Telegraph, citing data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Despite the fact that the final figures for the whole of 2017 will be available only in the spring, UNWTO experts "leaked" some of the information to the British publications.

It became known that in terms of inbound tourist flow, Spain bypassed the United States and became the second after the absolute leader - France.

Meanwhile, the number of tourists who stayed in the United States for at least one night during the first half of 2017 fell by 4%, which many associate with the beginning of the presidency of Donald Trump.

In Spain, on the contrary, in the first 10 months of last year, the number of foreign visitors increased by about 9%.

According to preliminary data from the World Tourism Organization, France has retained its status as the most visited country in the world. In 2017, almost 89 million foreign tourists visited the country, which is 6 million more than in 2016.

About 82.2 million foreign tourists visited Spain from January to December, and the United States - 72.9 million.

Interestingly, Spain surpassed the United States in this ranking from 2001 to 2007, but lost its position during the global economic crisis.

In fourth place in the ranking of world tourism - China (59.3 million foreign guests), in fifth - Italy (57.8 million).

The TOP-10 also includes Turkey (39.9 million), Mexico (39.3 million), Great Britain (38.7 million), Germany (37.6 million) and Thailand (34.7 million).

According to UNWTO experts, some countries experienced a real tourism boom in 2017. Among them: Turkey (tourist flow increased by 30%), Vietnam (by 27.8%), Indonesia (by 23.5%), Japan (by 18.3%), India (by 15.5%).

ATHENS, 5 January - RIA Novosti, Gennady Melnik. International tourism is undergoing tremendous changes - people are traveling more, but travel is getting shorter and costs are decreasing, the number of low-cost airlines - low-cost airlines and with them the sector of cheaper tourism - is growing. All this affects countries whose economies are heavily dependent on tourism, according to Greek entrepreneurs involved in the tourism business.

Greece itself, one of the ten most popular tourist destinations in the world, has been setting records for the number of tourists coming for several years, although tourism revenues are not growing so quickly. In 2016, Greece, according to preliminary data, was visited by 27.5 million tourists - one and a half million more than in 2015, and in three years the authorities hope to receive more than 30 million people a year.

Global Trends

The European trend has been to reduce average travel costs, reduce the time spent in the country and provide discounts by tourist businesses in order to attract the segment of customers who buys tours at the last minute, says Andreas Andreadis, President of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) ...

"It is a fact that European tourists have reduced average spending, and this is a trend that is being recorded everywhere. And in Spain and Italy, and in all competing destinations," he said at a meeting with reporters in connection with Christmas holidays.

At the same time, the average cost of one night in a hotel in Greece will remain at the level of 75 euros in recent years, and this is a very positive factor.

The average time spent by tourists in Greece has decreased from 10.7 to 7.8 days. This is due to the growing popularity among tourists of weekend tours - City Break, designed for two to four days, and the expansion of low-cost carriers. Together with low-cost airlines, tourists fly who are ready to spend less money on vacation, and their vacation itself is shorter.

"Such a general world situation," Andreadis is sure.

The decrease in the exchange rate of the euro against the dollar greatly helped the development of tourism in Greece - the costs of tourists have become lower, which means that competitiveness has increased in comparison with countries outside the euro zone.

New factor - safety

In a globalized world with a well-developed tourism sector and almost universal access to the Internet, it is very difficult to surprise someone with little-known products. However, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), there are rare, forgotten types of vegetables and fruits that many of us have never heard of.

They are forgotten for various reasons: trends and tastes change, some crops are difficult to grow, others are not allocated enough resources. At the same time, some of the rare vegetables and fruits are much better adapted to the conditions in a particular country or region than other varieties, they contain a lot of vitamins and nutrients and can become a healthy addition to the diet of the population.

In addition, rare crops have high commercial potential and, if a suitable market is found for them, can become a source of income for small farms.

Against the background of the rapid growth of the world's population, FAO experts emphasize the need to use all available food resources. The upcoming year 2021 was declared the International Year of Fruit and Vegetables in the organization. It will focus on disseminating nutritional information and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Five types of vegetables and fruits you probably haven't heard of

The native land of prickly pear is Mexico, but today this plant can be found in many arid regions of the planet. Opuntia is not afraid of drought, the fruits of this cactus are eaten raw, syrup and jam are also prepared from them. The fruits are rich in antioxidants and vitamins, especially vitamin C. A very peculiar tropical fruit grows on the breadfruit. The homeland of this plant is Oceania, about 120 varieties are known in total. As a rule, breadfruit begins to bear fruit in the sixth year and retains this ability for 50 years. Ripe fruits can be eaten raw, while unripe fruits can be cooked like potatoes. The flesh of the fruit is white, similar in texture to bread, and to the taste of chestnut. It contains a lot of starch and is quite capable of replacing wheat flour in the diet. In addition, according to traditional medicine, the pulp of the breadfruit is rubbed into the skin to treat infections.

Almost all parts of this plant are consumed - bark, pods, leaves, seeds, tubers, roots and even flowers. Moringa leaves, roots and unripe pods are eaten as vegetables. Moringa is rich in proteins, vitamins A, B and C, minerals, and is especially useful for pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as young children. Moringa tolerates drought easily. It grows in the tropics and subtropics throughout the planet.

The Spanish artichoke is a close relative of the artichoke and is a traditional ingredient in Spanish, Italian and southern French cuisine. Its flowers can be used as a rennet substitute that converts milk into cheese, and the leaves are believed to have a diuretic effect, improve gallbladder and liver function, and stimulate digestion. In addition, the Spanish artichoke helps maintain a cleaner environment: its seeds can be used to produce oil for biodiesel.

Both ripe fruits and grains of this plant are eaten. In addition, amaranth leaves are added to salad or stewed and eaten with meat or fish. Amaranth seeds, sometimes flavored with chocolate or rice, are a traditional Mexican snack that has recently been gaining popularity in Europe and North America. Amaranth is gluten-free (gluten) rich in vitamins and helps in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and anemia. If you cook amaranth with eggplant and potatoes, you get a delicious curry.
