Despite the fact that the final figures for the whole of 2017 will be available only in the spring, UNWTO experts "leaked" some of the information to the British publications.
It became known that in terms of inbound tourist flow, Spain bypassed the United States and became the second after the absolute leader - France.
Meanwhile, the number of tourists who stayed in the United States for at least one night during the first half of 2017 fell by 4%, which many associate with the beginning of the presidency of Donald Trump.
In Spain, on the contrary, in the first 10 months of last year, the number of foreign visitors increased by about 9%.
According to preliminary data from the World Tourism Organization, France has retained its status as the most visited country in the world. In 2017, almost 89 million foreign tourists visited the country, which is 6 million more than in 2016.
About 82.2 million foreign tourists visited Spain from January to December, and the United States - 72.9 million.
Interestingly, Spain surpassed the United States in this ranking from 2001 to 2007, but lost its position during the global economic crisis.
In fourth place in the ranking of world tourism - China (59.3 million foreign guests), in fifth - Italy (57.8 million).
The TOP-10 also includes Turkey (39.9 million), Mexico (39.3 million), Great Britain (38.7 million), Germany (37.6 million) and Thailand (34.7 million).
According to UNWTO experts, some countries experienced a real tourism boom in 2017. Among them: Turkey (tourist flow increased by 30%), Vietnam (by 27.8%), Indonesia (by 23.5%), Japan (by 18.3%), India (by 15.5%).
