Hungarian youth (from 14 to 24 years old) are athletic, appreciate good health and interesting work - this is what the results of a survey of 1,500 respondents say. Young men and women, especially in small towns and villages, devote a lot of time to their physical development and read relatively a lot.
In big cities, the picture is different - here young people choose other entertainments. Teenagers from 14 to 17 years old enjoy watching TV and playing computer games at home, while older guys are crazy about bars and pubs.
Not only local students are distracted from their studies and part-time work - foreigners willingly come to Hungary to taste its daytime entertainment and, of course, nightlife.
Hungarians are a musical nation, therefore they have a lot of festivals.
The most famous and large-scale takes place in Budapest on the Buda island and is called Sziget. This is a weeklong extravaganza with the participation of world-famous bands and DJs: The Prodigy, Franz Ferdinand, Armin van Buuren, Radiohead, Placebo, Iggy Pop, The Rasmus, 30 seconds to Mars have been headlining in different years.
Sziget in numbers: 60 venues, 1,000 performances, 400,000 visitors.
The VOLT Festival in Sopron is 15 venues with a variety of musical styles: rock, hardcore, electro, indie, jazz and hip-hop. In parallel with the festival, exhibitions and fairs are held in Sopron - they will be of interest to those who are a little older than VOLT visitors.
Partially rebuilt after the WWII bombing, the buildings have been renovated in loft style and given over to the power of nightlife: bars, pubs and clubs are located here. Simple but colorful decoration, affordable admission tickets and drinks make the "ruin" resting places the most favorite among young people.

Hungary is a distinctive European country, interesting for tourists in many aspects. The richest cultural heritage, natural attractions, peculiarities of national temperament are combined for Russians with an economic component that allows them to plan a budget trip without hindrance. The main difficulty for Russian tourists is language communication, the Hungarian language (belonging to the Finno-Ugric group) practically does not contain familiar words, including when written in Latin. Quite a lot of staff understands Russian, and the number of Russian-speaking guides is growing.
A Schengen visa is required to travel to Hungary. The peculiarities of obtaining a Hungarian visa permit were some additional documents (an extensive questionnaire, a certificate - a referral from a doctor, a confirmed hotel reservation). Independent hassle of filling out documents, visiting the embassy can be facilitated by visa centers, travel agencies engaged in individual tours. A secured visa regime will also ensure multiple visits to the Schengen countries.
In case of self-registration of documents at the visa center (permanent, long-term visa), tourists themselves can take care of travel to Hungary:
An example of a typical combination tour would be the Hungarian Pearls 8 Day Autumn Tour. From the train to Brest, the tourists, after going through customs, change into a comfortable bus, on which they cross Poland and Slovakia. The excursion program in Hungary starts from Miskolc-Tapolca, a unique cave complex with thermal baths decorated with light effects. Tourists are provided with excursion time, health-improving bathing in hot springs is possible, for which you need to pay extra.
The next stages of the journey are a visit to Eger (with a sightseeing bus tour of the city), transfer to Budapest. On the way, it is possible to stop at the "Valley of Beauties", lunch in a wine cellar, tasting of collection wines.
A stay in Budapest includes a sightseeing bus and walking tour of the Hungarian capital, optional excursions, a walk on the evening Danube motor ship, a free day, which can be spent on independent walks, shopping, and an additional excursion to Bratislava (200 km.).
Many tourists are happy to agree to an additional excursion to Vienna, to which you need to drive 240 kilometers from Budapest. On the way back to the Belarusian border, tourists stop at numerous castles in Hungary and Slovakia. There will be a stop in Lublin, a tour of the historic city center.
Most of the proposals of tour operators relate to organized tours to Budapest. They are divided by duration, saturation of excursion services. In Moscow, the tour "WEEK-END in Budapest" (4 days) can be bought for 100 euros (excluding the cost of the flight). An eight-day excursion tour "Brilliant Budapest" on the same conditions costs 170 euros.
The main objects included in excursions in Budapest: • Buda Castle; • Cathedral of King Matthias; • Fisherman's Bastion; • Basilica of St. Istvan; • Vaidahunyad castle; • Hungarian Parliament; • Royal Palace; • Heroes' Square.
Experienced tourists who have already visited Budapest are interested in other places in Hungary. They can opt for an eight-day tour that includes visits to Budapest, four Hungarian provinces. To the cost of the tour (400 euros) you need to add the price of plane tickets.
Visitors who consider Hungary a Balkan state risk hearing a lecture on how this small nation differs from "all these Slavs": the locals stubbornly consider and call themselves Magyars - a tribe that migrated over a thousand years ago from Central Asia to the very heart of Europe. The magnificent capital city of Budapest, consisting of old Buda and bustling Pest with its coffee houses and Turkish baths, is shrouded in a peculiar Central European spirit. The cultural atmosphere of the Habsburg Empire contributed to the fact that Beethoven was welcomed in Budapest, and Liszt, a native of Hungary, in Vienna.
New generations of writers, filmmakers, artists are still welcomed here. Budapest is the center of international fashion, which however adapts to local tastes. There is also a lot to see outside the capital. Lake Balaton is located in the west. This area is positioned as a "national resort". Old Sopron (on the border with Austria) and Pecs, a city in the Turkish spirit, are worth visiting. In the northeast lies the forested Northern Highlands, where the city of Eger is located, the center of winemaking.
Public transport operates throughout Hungary and fares are very low. However, there are problems with obtaining the necessary information: the staff rarely speaks foreign languages, although German is often understood in the Lake Balaton area. Thanks to the centralized MAV rail network, traveling around the country through Budapest is quick and easy. Major cities are the easiest to get to by intercity trains, which requires reservations with MAV agencies for an additional fee.
When traveling on szemelyvonat trains that stop in every village, there is no need to reserve a seat. Tickets (jegy) are sold at stations (palyaudvar or vasutallomas) on the day of departure, but for international trains (nemzetkozi gyorsvonat), tickets are best purchased at least 36 hours in advance. In this case, it is allowed to interrupt the trip once. When purchasing your ticket, indicate whether you require a one-way ticket (egy utra) or a round trip (retur or oda-vissza). The country has international transport cards Inter Rail and Eurail.
Between small towns it is more convenient to travel by Volan buses, which run almost throughout Hungary. You should arrive at the bus station in advance in order to have time to reserve a seat. For intercity trips from Budapest to major cities, you need to buy tickets half an hour before the bus leaves. Later you can buy them directly from the driver, but then you risk standing all the way. In rural areas, tickets are only sold by the driver (sometimes there is only one bus trip per day).
The price of living has increased dramatically in recent years. There is a tendency to indicate the price in euros (but both dollars and pounds sterling are accepted). Accommodation in the private sector and cheap youth hostels (hostels) is charged in euros or forints. During peak season, the cheapest establishments are usually filled to capacity, so you should make a reservation in advance. Outside Budapest and the area around Lake Balaton (where rates are higher by a third), the price of a double room with bathroom and TV in three-star hotels (szallo or szalloda) is about 40 euros. Solo travelers have to pay the same price, as single rooms are rare here.
A similar tariff is used at inns (fogado) and in boarding houses (panzio), where the price of accommodation is slightly lower than in hotels. Youth hostels (hostels) in Hungary are called differently: in the provincial towns - turistaszallo, and in the highlands - turistahaz. You can book a hotel room and get the information you need from local travel agencies. You may be referred to student dormitories, which are usually cheaper: rooms are rented from July to August, and on weekends - all year round. Private accommodation (fizeto vendegszoba), where you will be provided with room and food, is an inexpensive way to stay in the city center. Local travel agencies can help you find this type of accommodation for a small fee.
Alternatively, you can just see the szoba kiado or Zimmer Frei sign. The price for double rooms ranges from 15 euros in the provinces to 25 euros in Budapest and Lake Balaton. Accommodation in the inner city sector (Belvaros) is likely to be much better than on the outskirts. In the resort area and near large campsites you will find many bungalows (fahaz). High-end bungalows with kitchen, hot water, living room or terrace cost around € 30 per night, while simpler bungalows have at least clean bedrooms. Camping sites (usually referred to as Kemping) are also classified from luxury to third class. During peak season, the fee for them is up to 20 euros (in the area of Lake Balaton - slightly higher).
Goulash (gulyasleves) is a typical Hungarian dish, a soup made from meat and vegetables, which later began to be flavored with paprika. Hungarians prefer a hearty breakfast (reggeli): cheese, eggs and salami, as well as bread and jam. Coffee houses (kavehaz) are back in fashion, serving breakfasts and coffee with milk (tejeskave) or whipped cream (tejeszinhabbal). Most Hungarians order small cups of strong coffee (eszpresszo). A large selection of snacks is offered, including pastries and delicacies (csemege).
Pies (palacsinta) with different fillings and strudels (retes) are popular in numerous pastry shops (cukraszda). In summer, you can buy corn (kukorica) on street stalls, and in winter - fried chestnuts (gesztenye), near rivers and lakes, fried fish (sult hal) are sold from counters. In theory, etterem is a restaurant, while vendeglo is more like a Western European bistro (however, these differences are largely arbitrary). Often, folk-style tourist restaurants are still called csarda. Lunch is usually served here, while other places offer a full napi menu with a main course at moderate prices.
