How to travel with a dog in Russia and abroad

owner's School specialist

We will tell you how to travel with a dog by car, by train or plane in Russia and abroad, what documents are required and what rules exist.

Every year our cities are becoming more dog-friendly (more friendly to dogs), there are more and more shops, cafes and public spaces where you can get with a dog. It is not surprising that more people decide to take their pet on a trip, whether to another country by plane or across Russia by car or train.

We are very supportive of this approach, so we have collected all the basic information to make your trips with the dog easier and more enjoyable.

How to travel with a dog abroad

Once you have decided on the country to travel to, you need to go to the website of the embassy of that state and study the local requirements for the import of animals. In every country, even among the states of the European Union, the rules may differ. For example, it is much more difficult to import an animal to Germany or Spain than to Croatia or the Czech Republic.

Find out the names of vaccines that will be recognized by veterinarians in that country. In addition, be sure to check if you need to quarantine the dog upon arrival. This can be a problem, for example, in the UK or Ireland. If you are traveling to Europe via Ukraine or Moldova, you will need another rabies antibody test. This analysis is done in laboratories approved by the European Commission. In Russia there are only 5.

Since 2011, to travel to the EU countries, as well as for the USA, Japan and other countries, a dog's chip is required. Marks for identification are no longer enough. Chipping is a quick and painless procedure. We wrote about it in detail here ... In our clinic, we carry out chipping without an appointment, the whole process, together with the paperwork, takes no more than 15 minutes. You can sign up for chipping by calling +7 495 662-92-32 or +7 916 712-15-12.

It is important to note that for many countries the rule is that the chipping date must be earlier than the rabies vaccination date. Consider this when planning your trip.

At least 20 days prior to travel, vaccinate your dog if it has not been vaccinated within the last year.

How to issue a veterinary certificate

Bring to your county government veterinary clinic any necessary documents required by the embassy of the selected country. Most likely it will be: an international veterinary passport, a certificate with a chip number, information about the route, the results of tests for parasites (worms). You can make an appointment with a veterinarian at a state veterinary clinic through the mos portal. u.

Vacation is the best "time of the year". This is an opportunity to break out of the usual circle, get new impressions and make old dreams come true. Vacation is the perfect time to travel. You are looking forward to the trip, working out the itinerary, writing a list of necessary things ... and suddenly you stumble upon your dog's devoted, loving gaze. Where to put it on vacation?

It's good if you have a loved one, whom you and your pet both trust. Then, consider that the problem is solved. Just leave the dog with him - it will be calmer for both you and your pet. And if there is no such person? Traveling with a dog is a serious business and it is necessary to prepare for it in advance.

If you are going on a trip to Russia, it will be quite easy to take your dog with you. A minimum of documents is required - a veterinary passport and veterinary certificate No. 1. With trips abroad, everything is much more complicated.

Going abroad

Before you take your four-legged friend with you abroad, you need to contact the consulate of the country you are going to.

Serious problems may arise already at this stage. The rules for importing dogs to different countries are very different. Somewhere the import of fighting dogs and other aggressive breeds is prohibited. In many countries there is a ban on the import of puppies that are less than 3 months old.

All these points need to be clarified "on the shore" otherwise you risk getting into a very unpleasant situation - you will be released from Russia, but you will not be able to enter the country of arrival. And what will you do on the border with your pet?

In addition, there are quarantines in some countries. For example, in the UK, the quarantine period is 6 months. Therefore, if you are going on vacation to England for just a couple of weeks, it makes no sense to take an animal with you - you will still be torn apart.

If you did not find any restrictions concerning your “beast” in the legislation of the country, we are moving on.

Check information about all necessary vaccinations - some countries require additional ones against certain infectious diseases.

Greetings, dear blog readers!

In the first article I would like to discuss a global question: Should I take my dog on vacation?

To this, almost Shakespearean in emotionality: "To take or not to take, that is the question ..."; each owner responds based on their own desires, habits, lifestyle and capabilities.

Although often, the decisive factor is the counter question: "Who should I leave the dog with?" We will consider this issue a little later. And first, let's figure out how useful and pleasant your vacation is for your pet.

A little bit of physiology

Anyone who claims that our favorites are only animals, they are governed by only instincts and they have no reason, to put it mildly, are mistaken. Although I have repeatedly heard similar statements from veterinarians and other "professionals".

A dog is an animal with a high nervous organization. Our pets are capable of experiencing deep and sincere feelings: sadness, fear, insecurity, joy. I think all real "dog lovers" will agree with me.

Stress is one of the most powerful and destructive feelings for a dog. In the wild, stress plays a positive role in helping the beast adapt better to the harsh world around it. Therefore, stray dogs live a bright, stormy, but ... short life. We want our pets to be with us as long as possible, while remaining healthy and cheerful. But for our spoiled pets, stress is truly destructive.

Stress conditions can be mild or severe, short-term, long-term or even chronic. In this case, the dog suffers not only emotionally. Without going into physiological details, I will only say that during stress, a powerful blow is inflicted on the endocrine, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and other systems and organs of the animal. Depending on the severity and duration of the stressful condition, severe and irreversible damage to the dog's health can be caused.

Dog owners are sometimes confused by rest. I don't want to part with the animal, but if you take the pet with you, then there are doubts: the owner is not sure that he will be able to relax with the dog.

First of all, you need to think about whether your dog and the other traveler around him will be comfortable. Let's figure out which dog breeds are most suitable for travel.

Which dogs are afraid to travel

Your dog's physical and psychological well-being determines how calm or nervous the journey will be. These factors are influenced by both the temperament and the size of the animal.

It is hardly worth deciding on a trip with a Central Asian or Caucasian Shepherd Dog. The animal takes up a lot of space and relates to what is happening in its own way. Any aggression while moving can cause a delay or even an end to the vacation. If you are traveling in the summer, the animal may be hot. You can hardly imagine a carrier that will fit this large animal. Asians and Caucasians are transported by planes, cars and trains. Only in this case there is a question of transportation, and not a trip to rest.

A similar, albeit slightly different in detail, situation with trips in the cold season with lap dogs. The Chinese Crested will be uncomfortable in January frosts. Even if the path that she has to do is just a road to the warm compartment of the train and from the station to the place of accommodation.

It is rare for a dachshund to sit quietly for 5-7 hours while traveling on a train. This breed needs to move, sniff out something and find out, and at the same time notify about its presence with a sonorous bark.

Which dogs can take the road

Pooch and mestizo tolerate the road well. These dedicated family members are ready to follow the owners wherever they go.

Positive attitude towards transportation and new experiences Poodle and Spaniel. These curious dogs do not cause problems for their owners.

Summer holidays at the sea charge you with health and energy. But many have a pet at home - a dog. The owners are wondering where to put it on during their vacation. Hotels for animals are expensive, relatives and friends who are ready to take care of themselves are not at all. Yes, and parting with a pet is hard. The owners decide to go on a seaside vacation with their dog.

Basic rules

Before the trip, they consult with the veterinarian to find out how the animal will cope with the change in climate and environment. Dangers await at sea - overheating and hypothermia. A specialist will give advice on how not to ruin your vacation and bring your dog home healthy:

  • Your dog needs proper grooming. So that she does not survive stress, do not change her usual home routine (food, walks). So the animal acclimatizes faster.
  • The hot sun is destructive for animals from a temperate and cool climate. Especially for decorative breeds. These are Pekingese, dachshunds, bulldogs, corgi. Both shaggy and "naked" breeds are hard to endure the heat. Therefore, in the first days, dogs are taken out for a walk early in the morning and in the evening, gradually accustoming them to the climate.

Pay attention! A leash and a muzzle are mandatory attributes of walking with a dog. On vacation, they pick up a light wardrobe: a knitted T-shirt, a cap.

Best Dog Vacation Countries

There are many countries in the world that welcome tourists with dogs. Abroad, in general, there is a very tolerant and even reverent attitude towards animals. There are laws that severely punish mistreating dumb friends.

You can safely bring your dog to the following countries:

  • France. The friendly attitude of the French towards dogs is a matter of respect. Luxurious castles, many hotels are open to animals. The payment for them can be scanty or not charged at all. There are places for tailed guests at the tables in restaurants.
  • Switzerland. Pet ownership is taken seriously here. The owners even take dog treatment courses. In the restaurant, water will be offered first to the animal, then to the owner.
  • Italy. Energetic and cheerful Italians will gladly accept pets in hotels, cafes and on the beaches. It is not forbidden to visit famous historical places with furry companions.
  • Canada. The place where you can safely go to rest with your dog. There are most areas where they are allowed to frolic without collars and muzzles.

Great Britain, Scandinavian countries, Australia are famous for their loyal attitude. In Germany, dogs are considered family members, the attitude is respectful. There are no stray dogs - stray animals are placed in shelters, where they create comfortable living conditions.
