Hiking is a special kind of travel

Such travels require remarkable preparation, tremendous fortitude and will. An ordinary unprepared person, after the first kilometers traveled on foot, will think a dozen times whether or not it is worth hiking in the future. Previously, I myself walked some routes, wound more than a dozen kilometers along them, saw a lot of beautiful places, received a huge number of positive emotions. On some trips I took my friends with me, along several routes, where the path is not the longest and most difficult, my friend and I took our classmates.

Now I want to share with you, my dear readers, a selection and general overview of the main tourist routes for those who like to hike. Of course, I myself did not go through all of them, but on some tracks I experienced the most real admiration for the surrounding nature, the people living there and the local flora and fauna. See, choose? check out preliminary information on future itineraries, choose sturdy hiking shoes, and go!

Benefits of Hiking

• Affordable price. By traveling on foot, you save impressive travel costs. In addition, you can sleep in a tent in the open air, eat in non-touristy places - a great opportunity to see the world literally for a penny.

• Cognition. To get to know the spirit of a city or country, it is not enough to see their main attractions. After all, the main flavor is in residential areas, in bazaars, in cafes and restaurants where local residents eat. You can go off hiking trails and admire the area in its true form, observe nature, and relax with your soul.

You have read our text about slow tourism and decided to spend this vacation not on a sun lounger with a cocktail in your hands and not in a kilometer-long queue to a museum, but in nature with a backpack on your shoulders. There are about a billion options for where to go hiking. How to choose a destination, for how many days to plan a trip, what to take with you, how much to calculate? We talked to experienced hikers and bikers and found several convenient and interesting routes for you.

The author thanks Oleg Brattsev, Dmitry Sergeev, Artem Konevskikh, Ekaterina Dyba, Maxim Tarasov, Francesca Opus, Antonino Frenda, Marco and Elena for their help and advice.

Let's start small. Suppose you are Fyodor Konyukhov in your heart and dream of walking around the entire Caucasus or walking the path of St. James, but in fact you only saw a tent with a sleeping bag in your grandfather's photograph. In this case, you should start small and go, for example, on a small weekend hike to assess the level of your strength, comfort and pleasure from the process. We have selected a few simple routes that are suitable for beginners (or grated hikers who are still far from vacation and do not want to stay in the city for the weekend).

Dunilovo, Ivanovo region

Why go. For the sake of Russian architecture, temple complexes and Levitanian landscapes. The route is short and very easy, perfect for beginners.

Dunilovo was once a large commercial and industrial center: trade routes from Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod passed through it. Now from its former industrial glory, only a small weaving factory, beautiful residential buildings and a bakery, famous throughout the district, remain.

The largest and most restored complex is the Holy Dormition Convent. One of the oldest monasteries in Russia, Nikolo-Shartomsky, is located in Vvedenie.

How to get there. From Moscow you can take a bus to Shuya. Departure from the Shchelkovo bus station, the journey takes a little more than 6 hours (excluding traffic jams on the Gorkovskoye highway), the ticket price is about 800 rubles.

From Shuya to Vvedenie - 15 km. You can save energy on sightseeing and take the bus (34 rubles per ticket, half an hour on the way). From Vvedenie to Dunilovo - about 7 km. You can walk along an asphalt road or across a field.

Food and accommodation. Better to pitch a tent in Dunilovo on the other side of the river. In case: there is one hotel in the village, but prices are high.

The next day you can go back by the same route, or take a bus from Dunilovo to Shuya: a ticket costs about 50 rubles, there are morning and evening flights.

Klyazminsko-Lukhsky nature reserve, Vladimir region

Hiking - travel that combines day trips and camping. This allows you to expand your horizons and enjoy a rich and exciting outdoor recreation. The key difference from day trips is the size of your backpack, as you need to carry all your essentials on your back. And you must choose your gear with care.

To prepare for your first hike, follow these steps:

  • Choose your destination: short overnight hikes in familiar surroundings are the best choice for your first trip.
  • Take the necessary equipment and clothes for rent: this will be the best choice if you are not sure that this type of recreation will suit your taste in the future. Rent equipment or borrow from friends.
  • Plan your menu: Freeze-dried instant meals are lightweight and easy to prepare. Also stock up on snacks on the way.

If you have a friend with overnight trekking experience, invite him to become your guide and companion. For the first time, it is better not to risk going alone and use the services of mountain guides.

Choose your itinerary

The key point is that it is easy to make mistakes in the mountains. If the hike is too hard it can lead to accidents. If the hike is easy, you have more time to explore the area. For a successful first overnight hike, follow these tips:

Consult experienced tourists: in our Outdoor Center Almaty lecture hall you can meet experienced tourists and sportsmen who can give recommendations for a trip. Travel guides are also a valuable source of knowledge and will help you plan your itinerary correctly.

Travel close to home: Plan to hike shorter distances than your regular day hike, because walking with a heavy backpack is harder and slower.

Gain altitude gradually: even if you've been on a lot of daytime hikes with significant gains, it's best to conserve your strength on your first overnight hike on your own.

Choose a well-known route: when choosing a route for an independent hike, try to choose well-known hiking trails, where you will surely come across people on the trail who can help you if you encounter difficulties.

Make sure there is water near the camp: if your source of fresh water is a river or lake, that's great. However, streams and springs can dry out, so check with local land managers before relying on a small water source.
