Extreme tourism: a kind of promising recreation

Various types of extreme tourism have for many years been attracting the attention of travelers who are already fed up with standard hotels and sightseeing walks.

It is for them that special tours have been developed in recent years, including climbing the mountains, inspecting destroyed historical buildings and, of course, traveling not with the usual sightseeing buses, but hiking, hitchhiking and motorcycle trips.

There are really many interesting options for the modern traveler. Their potential participant only needs to choose a suitable one and join a specific tour so as not to miss anything.

So that you can do this without any problems, let's see what exactly they mean by extreme tourism, and what types of it are available to all travelers today.

Extreme tourism

At the moment, there is no common understanding of the term extreme tourism. Usually, they designate those types of activities associated with staying in territories different from the place of residence in terms of landscape, social foundations, climate, cultural heritage, which pose an increased risk to human life and health.

This risk can be associated with various factors, including the possibility of falling from a height, exhaustion, drowning, and more. The list of such risks is currently very large and depends rather on the type of tourism you choose.

Various types of extreme tourism can both promote a complete rejection of the use of the benefits of civilization and require the use of only improvised means in a hike: flasks, shovels, matches and others. Others, for example, diving, are unthinkable without modern equipment.

Adventure tourism is currently available to travelers in virtually any country. You just need to decide what kind of its direction you want to do. Fortunately, there are a lot of them today.

Types of extreme tourism

Extreme tourism in all countries is quite diverse. There are such types of this pastime:

Extreme tourism 2019; and here's what you need to know

Overtake the bull

Where: Pamplona, SpainHow much is it worth seeing at the Ensierro in Pamplona: on the street - free of charge, from the balcony - 60-140 euros (4700 - 11000 rubles)

Bumping into running bulls on a narrow street is not fun. But hot Spaniards think differently. Running the bulls in front of the bullfight and running away from them is a long-standing Spanish pastime called the ensierro. The most famous ensierro is held in Pamplona on the feast of Saint Fermin, from 6 to 14 July. Anyone over the age of 18 can participate in the race. But fighting bulls are not cute calves, they can plant on a horn. So it is better to look for a balcony in advance on Relafeta Street to watch the angry animals from a safe height.

Share a dinner with a hyena

Where: Harer, EthiopiaHow much is it worth seeing at feeding hyenas: 50–100 birr (120–240 rubles) per person

The inhabitants of the Ethiopian city of Harer are friends with hyenas. Predators work as city scavengers: they eat bits in landfills and hunt for living creatures so that rats do not force people out of the city. So Ethiopians are even glad that hyenas roam the streets freely at night. And so that the predators are docile, they are fed. When it gets really dark, catch a tuk-tuk that will take you to the feeding place. First, watch the Ethiopian fish out of the basket for meat, which is instantly swallowed by the spotted flock. Then try it yourself: treat a hyena with meat from your hand. Or even cooler - take a stick in your mouth, hang a fat piece on it and wait for the beast to take it off. Just don't make any sudden movements - who knows, these hyenas.

Walk the path of death

Where: Mount Huashan, China How much does it cost to get to Mount Huashan: a ticket to the mountain - 100-180 yuan (1000-1800 rubles), depending on the season, entrance to the "death path" - another 30 yuan (300 rubles)

Huashan is one of the five sacred mountains of Taoism, but the path to spirituality is not easy. Previously, among the steep slopes, sages and hermits hid, and to this day, impressive paths over the cliffs lead to the peaks. The steepest is the "Death Trail" at the South Peak. You will have to make your way along narrow wooden planks nailed to a vertical cliff at an altitude of 2000 meters. At the entrance, everyone is supplied with safety systems, but it's still scary to the point of wet palms. If you dare to put your feet on the trail and hang on a rope above the clouds, you can consider that the most extreme vacation in your life was a success.

Descend into the volcano crater

Where: Trichnyukayigur volcano, half an hour from Reykjavik, Iceland How much is the descent to the volcano: ISK 42,000 (26,000 rubles)

Ignore the threatening name of the volcano - Trichnyukayigur - and enter the open elevator that will take you 120 meters down. No, not to the Underworld, but to the very bottom of the crater. Look around in the twilight, listen to the echo and trust the guide: Trichnyukayigur has been sleeping peacefully for four thousand years and will definitely not blow out from under your feet. And then joyfully climb back into the light and run 3 km to the beginning of the road much more cheerful than walking to the volcano. Not every day it is possible to get out of the fiery hell.

Since childhood, we have been surrounded by a romantic halo of stories about polar explorers who have lived for years at autonomous stations in Antarctica, conducting scientific experiments, collecting information about this harsh continent, and also taking care of its "indigenous inhabitants" - penguins.

However, it is not at all necessary to go on long and far from always safe Antarctic expeditions, because you can visit the southern continent as a tourist. Many travel companies provide their clients with a similar service.

People wishing to visit Antarctica can swim to the shores of this continent on a cruise ship or even fly to one of the stations as part of a thematic tour.

Cost. A cruise on a liner with a landing in Antarctica will cost an extreme lover at least 1800 US dollars (start from Patagonia). A ten-day expedition across the continent is much more expensive - from $ 5000.

North Pole

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the leaders of several expeditions argued among themselves, which of them was the first to visit the North Pole. At the moment, the American Robert Peary is considered the discoverer of this point of the Earth, it happened on April 21, 1908. However, it is unlikely that this brave man, who reached the Pole, enduring incredible hardships and applying superhuman efforts, could have assumed that tourist trips would be possible there a century later.

However, anyone can now visit the North Pole to admire the endless fields of ice, as well as travel around the world in just a few seconds.

You can get to the North Pole quickly and safely by plane, icebreaker, or even by vehicles specially prepared for such an expedition.

Cost. A trip to the North Pole on an icebreaker will cost a tourist $ 21,000, and by plane - $ 18,000.

More and more young people feel the need for active rest, where there is a powerful adrenaline rush. Adventure tourism offers a type of travel that is life-threatening to some extent and more thrilling than a beach holiday.

The danger of extreme travel

The history of extreme travel is associated with the development of modern sports that appeared in the middle of the last century and are now widely popular - snowboarding, diving, rock climbing. Every year the opportunities for extreme recreation are becoming wider. Mostly they target a young audience. The risk factors for extreme tourism can be categorized by the nature of the impact:

  • the risk of injury (avalanche, rockfall, snow drift, fire);
  • the impact of the natural environment (unfavorable climatic conditions for the body or weather disasters);
  • biological influence (bites of exotic insects or animals, occurrence of local infections);
  • psychophysiological stress (depends on the degree of physical or nervous tension during difficult situations);
  • ultraviolet or radiation radiation;
  • lack of necessary information support for tourists, poor quality of tour preparation, the possibility of a man-made disaster on the route.

Natural Survival

Sometimes the participants of the extreme tour themselves abandon modern communication systems and household appliances, taking on a hike only the most necessary things - a flask, a compass, a knife, flint or matches, a first-aid kit. In this case, extreme tourism takes place at the level of survival in natural conditions.

Such a journey requires special preparation. A tourist should be well versed in the peculiarities of the area, study its flora and fauna, and know about the beneficial properties of medicinal plants. Only your own experience and knowledge, practical skills will help you to withstand the difficulties and dangers of an extreme hike. But for beginners without sufficient physical training, a one-day hike through the mountainous terrain will be an extreme tour.

Mountain Tourism

Sports extreme tourism remains the most popular. Alpine skiing is a widespread type of outdoor activity. Snowboarding emerged in the early 60s as an extreme extreme of alpine skiing. Speed boarding from mountain slopes has become so popular that at the end of the last century it was officially included in the program of the Olympic Games. Some extreme lovers go snowboarding on the sandy slopes in the summer.

Being in the mountains is in itself a sufficient risk. Mountain types of extreme tourism are considered the most dangerous. Among them, mountaineering is rightfully ranked first. For ascents, it is usually customary to choose summer time when weather conditions are more favorable. However, daredevils are not afraid of either the winter bad weather or the danger of avalanches. And it doesn't matter that the conquered peak is not the famous five-thousander. Victory over the forces of nature is important, and most importantly, over oneself.

One of the interesting extreme tours is a hike to the base mountaineering camp on Everest, which passes through the most beautiful places in the Himalayas.
