Diving First Steps: Good to Know

Dive tourism - a short educational program

In the first article "Diving without lyrics" we introduced you to the basics of diving. Now let's dive deeper!

Why book a diving with an agency?

Why book a diving with an agency - if, it would seem, you can just go to the diving center closest to the hotel and dive there? The answer is very simple.

Firstly, with such an unassuming choice of a diving center "on site", there is a high risk of ending up in a club with low quality standards, low qualification of instructors, carelessly selected groups, poor organization, old, irregularly maintained equipment, and so on. Further. But this not only negatively affects the quality and pleasure of diving, but also jeopardizes their safety! Tour operators, as a rule, work with reliable and well-established diving centers that really care about the quality and safety of tourists.

Secondly, a tourist does not have to look for a diving center himself and negotiate everything on his own, especially since in the high season a good center can be “on the stop” and, even if they find additional space in it, there is a great chance of getting not the "freshest" and not the most suitable suit in size. If the client has taken care of his diving in advance, then on the agreed day and time he will already be waited for at the "reception" of the hotel, and a suitable set of equipment will be prepared for him at the diving center.

Thirdly, the tourist will have the opportunity to plan his diving in advance, and he will not need to waste time on dive sites that are not interesting for him (dive sites).

And, fourthly, with advance booking, you can request a Russian-speaking instructor or diving guide, which will finally remove the language barrier.

It is important to note that the prices for diving when booked in advance with the agency will not be higher than the prices offered by the diving center locally.

Insurance

It is convenient to issue both medical and dive insurance at the same time. Then the tourist will have one international phone for any case, and the insurance company will be ready to help in any situation. That is, not only will he pay for the doctor's work to remove the needles of the sea urchin from the victim's heels, but also, if necessary, the delivery and rehabilitation of the victim in the nearest pressure chamber, which may be many kilometers from the dive site.

Dive tourism - a short educational program

In my previous articles, which have already accumulated - wow! - as many as five, I told you about what diving tourism is and who divers are. Ahead is the summer season. This means that neither the Maldives, nor Phuket, nor Egypt, which has already become native, are waiting for divers in the coming months. So where can a scuba diving go? Or rather, where can a diver be brought in in the summer? Of course, the Mediterranean and European countries are lured by the "high season" - the same Malta, Croatia, Spain, Turkey, Tunisia. only the diving there, in general, is very mediocre.

So now we'll talk about the best diving destinations for the summer season. That is, about those resorts where summer is not just suitable, and it is precisely the best time for diving. For example, contrary to the habit of our compatriots to fly to Southeast Asia in winter, many islands and resorts in this region are waiting for an influx of tourists from March-April to November! Amazing? But the fact! So read on and you will find the best, if sometimes unexpected, options for divers.

Thailand

The “high season” for diving in the Andaman Sea, popular Phuket and the Similan Islands, ends in March. But this does not mean at all that Thailand does not wait for divers in the summer - the high season in the Gulf of Thailand begins in April, and the islands of Koh Samui and Tao are waiting for divers until September inclusive. The best place to stay is on Koh Samui, from where daily boats leave for Tao Island and nearby dive sites. However, it is worth warning that there can be quite a lot of divers under water there, and the visibility can sometimes be poor.

Philippines

Most of the Philippine Islands spoil tourists with excellent weather from November to May inclusive, but, as if specifically for divers, there are a few exceptions. First of all, the resorts of the central region of Visayas are naturally protected from typhoons, since they are “hidden” inside the archipelago, and do not have a pronounced rainy season. Famous and popular among scuba diving fans, the islands of Bohol, Dumaget, Sumilon, Siquihor, Panglao, Balikasag and Apo await divers all year round, although from July to October, intermittent rain is most likely there.

But the real summer treasure of the Philippine Islands lies in the heart of the Sulu Sea - the Tubbataha Reef. This national marine park consists of two coral atolls separated by eight kilometers of strait. Back in 1993, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This care allowed the reef to preserve populations of a variety of reef and ocean inhabitants: different species of stingrays and sharks, perches and barracudas frolic in its waters. The Tubbataha Reef is only available for diving for a short period from March to June, and it is during this time that many boats with divers moor along its shores.

Malaysia

The well-known popular resorts of Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor, located along the western coast of the Malacca Peninsula, delight tourists with excellent sunny weather throughout our "domestic" winter. But these islands are not at all the best diving resorts in Malaysia. But this country has something to offer divers!

From March to October, it is recommended to visit the eastern coast of the Malacca Peninsula and the entire island of Borneo with its small satellite islands. On the peninsula, not so far from the capital, the islands of the states of Pahang and Terengganu, both well-known and new for our market, are waiting for divers. The more northern islands of Redang, Perhentian and Lang Tengah will delight you not only with untouched protected coral reefs and an abundance of colorful marine life, but also with the pristine beauty of recently opened beaches. The more southerly island of Tioman is especially suitable for technical divers. By the way, Tioman is considered one of the most beautiful islands on the planet. In addition, it is in these parts that a unique opportunity operates: "dive safari" along the east coast of Malaysia! I must say, "dive safaris" as such are not very common in this country, but one of the most comfortable yachts in Thailand - "Ocean Rover", which several years ago opened many new dive sites from the Andaman Sea to Sulawesi, is now mastering a new direction. Colorful, memorable diving and almost complete absence of competitors fighting for the right to be the first to see the beauty of new dive sites of competitors, make this route more than worthy of attention.

However, Malaysia has something to offer to fans of everything ready. The island of Sipadan cannot be recommended - its name speaks for itself for many years. This famous resort, every diver's dream, despite its popularity all year round, guarantees the best weather with the greatest visibility from April to October. And August on Sipadan is also the best month to watch how the “symbols” of this island, green turtles, lay their eggs.

Diving for beginners: where and how to start diving, where to dive, certificates and equipment, advice from diving expert Veronica Birman.

Check the tightness of the diving suits and the stocks of nitro-mixture in the cylinders! We continue our deep sea dive with the charming Veronica Birman.

You can dive almost anywhere: from the Norwegian fjords to the Australian Great Barrier Reef. The question is what exactly does a person expect from diving. "Wrecks"? Extreme? Unearthly landscapes, caves and grottoes? Or just a flock of nimble fish of all colors of the rainbow in coastal reefs?

Each "diving" direction has its own underwater "feature", its own unique biosphere, and you can talk about each for a very long time. A few topical examples: The availability of interesting dive sites makes the coasts of Egypt and Malta ideal for beginners. At the same time, the vibrant life of the Red Sea and the amazing landscapes of underwater Malta will be of interest to the sophisticated submariner, albeit on a completely different level. In the Maldives, you can watch the giant manta rays, "soaring" in the water column among other fish. In the Cuban archipelago "Queen's Gardens" - swim in an embrace with whale sharks (the kindest soul of a creature who has no teeth in the usual sense of the word and cannot close his mouth). In the coastal waters of the Galapagos Islands - touch the famous turtles, in the Black Sea - personally trace the history of sea battles. Micronesia is considered to be the generally recognized “underwater paradise”. Diving sites of even one coast can give completely different impressions, and a three-day dive off one of the Malaysian islands may well seem more interesting to someone than a week-long "dive safari" in Thailand.

It is very important to take into account the seasonality of diving: in different countries, at different times of the year, the water "blooms", which inevitably affects the visibility (and this is a very important point). In addition, fish migrations, wind and, accordingly, currents (not to mention the weather in general) are important for divers, therefore it is always necessary to clarify the time frames of the most favorable seasons with partners and warn clients about possible diving complications at other times.

Where to go

Conventionally, the countries of diving tourism can be divided into two categories:

Category one: "You can't help diving here!"

There are destinations where divers from all over the world go to dive. These are almost all the countries of Southeast Asia: Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia and others. Caribbean and Latin America: Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico. Europe: Malta, Croatia, Norway. And also - South Africa, Australia, Maldives, India (Laccadives and Andaman Islands), Ecuador (Galapagos Islands), and finally Egypt. People go to these places for daily diving and dive safari. From the point of view of any diver, to visit such a country and not dive is simply blasphemy!

Category two: "It's worth diving there!"

Destinations that cannot be called "diving", but where the owner of the mask and wetsuit will find what to see under the water, since he has arrived there. These include all the islands of the Caribbean, Austrian lakes, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, India (Goa), Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Jordan, Seychelles, Mauritius and others. Diving in these countries is very original and interesting for its peculiarities, therefore, a rare diver will refuse to "check in" in the local underwater world.

A fact that many thousands of scuba diving fanatics are ready to confirm: diving is the most "addicted" type of active recreation. People who have made the first few dives and have not even thought about buying a mask, fins and a wetsuit can be counted on one hand. Still would! Bright, incomparable and always a little adrenaline sensations from underwater walks will not leave anyone indifferent.

But now the conversation will not be about the beauty of the underwater world, but only about the practical points directly related to diving tours: the dangers of scuba diving (real and imaginary), ways to make life easier for beginners, learning opportunities, geography of diving and , of course, about health and insurance.

Dangers - real and perceived

Fear of the first dive often becomes the main inhibiting factor that prevents a tourist from joining a new type of active recreation. However, diving, especially recreational, can be called an extreme sport only for advertising purposes. Scuba diving, like alpine skiing, has its own difficulty levels, and there are practically no serious dangers for beginners - after all, no one puts neophyte skiers, who confuse a yoke with a telemark, immediately on the "black" track. Of course, a person who is wearing a wetsuit for the first time in their life will experience excitement - and what a great deal! But if you dive with modern equipment and pay close attention to the instructions, then this excitement will remain just a pleasant surge of hormones before diving into the unknown. Real "extreme" - great depths, tangible currents, night dives, ice and speleo diving are the lot of experienced divers.

For beginners - shallow water, water of a comfortable temperature and no strong currents. The only thing they should be afraid of is close contact with poisonous creatures or plants. The pre-dive briefing certainly includes a separate item that under water you should not grab anything with your hands: not only for reasons of safety of the diver himself, but also in order not to cause any harm to the underwater flora and fauna. Indeed, if every diver in the Red Sea touches one coral, in a couple of years there will be nothing to touch.

Simple solutions

To plunge into the underwater world with your head, of course, you must complete at least a minimum course of study. But getting an idea of what it is can be much easier. Diving into the underwater reality without a course of study is called "introdiving" (literally - "introductory diving"). A novice tourist will be shown an educational film at the diving center, read the instructions, put on a wetsuit, give them a try to dive in the pool and, finally, take them (perhaps even by the hand) along a simple route. The whole procedure takes about three hours and costs about 50 USD. After such a test dive, few people give up further acquaintance with the wonders of the underwater world and upon arrival home they go to enroll in the nearest club. And some even become avid "introdivers".

For "amateur" diving on vacation, it is not at all necessary to have your own equipment: cylinders, regulator, BC, compass - all this stuff can be rented in any diving center. They will also pick up a suit, mask and fins of the right size. Experienced divers (again - a clear parallel with alpine skiing), as a rule, carry their equipment with them, chosen in accordance with individual preferences (of course, with the exception of cylinders - they are rented on the spot).

Where to go to study?

In the previous parts of the epic story of Veronica Bierman (which is just right to be published as a separate book), you not only got acquainted with the basics of diving tourism, but also learned many details and subtleties of diving as such. As you know, “the one who does nothing is not mistaken” and this time we will talk about what “pitfalls” are on this path.

Terminology

The first "scattering of pebbles" lies in wait for you at the very beginning: you can call the breathing mixture NitrOx - "Nitrox" or "Nitrox": it will not be offended, but you really should not call divers "divers". In addition to the fact that it is simply illiterate from the point of view of a self-respecting diver, in some circles it is also customary to jokingly call inexperienced, “green” divers who have not really learned how to dive competently and behave underwater as “divers”. Also, instead of the dashing word "diving", probably born from the traditional mixture of "French and Nizhny Novgorod", it is more appropriate to use the existing Russian words "dive", "dive", "dive" and even a specific sea "walk", in our case - under water.

Another pitfall lies in the term "daily diving". Remember, this is the name of a regular shore dive or boat dive with a dive on the shore, as opposed to a dive safari - a sea cruise with regular dives. Despite the fact that the word “daily” in translation from English means “daily, everyday”, you cannot say “daily diving on a dive safari”.

Travel & Flights

A giant underwater boulder is found in the airfreight and baggage area. However, some airlines offer divers an additional weight of luggage without additional payment only within 10 kilograms, and for further excess they have to pay extra, many have already resigned themselves. But the fact that the weight of each bag should not exceed 32 kg, so as not to become a "cargo" and not go on a flight according to the rules of air cargo transportation, still very few people know. Divers love to buy special gear bags that can comfortably fit everything they need. True, such "happiness" can weigh 40 kg or more - and not everyone is ready to quickly stuff luggage into several bags in order to keep within the norm.

Domestic flights to the resorts of discounter airlines, which offer incredibly low fares, are often very expensive for divers. The fact is that discounters, unlike other airlines, offer very little free baggage weight, and you have to pay much more for the excess. So, before rushing for tickets on a "budget" flight, you should roughly estimate the weight of the luggage and the amount of the surcharge - and calculate whether it will be really budget.

The rules of local airlines sometimes conceal another unexpected surprise: on the islands, where small, 20 seats, turboprop aircraft often fly, there are fundamental restrictions on the weight of a person with luggage. And it's not even about money, but about the carrying capacity of the aircraft. For example, a person with luggage can be allocated a quota of 100-120 kg. Everything from above has a chance to fly not only for an additional fee, but also on the next flight - if, of course, it does not have its own "heavyweights". Sometimes it is possible to redeem additional pieces of baggage, but not all airlines allow this. Therefore, always allow for more time when connecting from a flight of one airline to another: remember that running with bulky and heavy luggage between terminals is inconvenient.

He flew away, did not promise to return

Another pile of cobblestones hidden under the water is often waiting for the diver and his agent in the area of the language barrier. Unfortunately, there were cases when a diving course ordered in advance remained unclaimed, and, despite all sorts of pantomimes by foreign instructors and a choice of 5-6 European languages of varying degrees of "brokenness", tourists returned home with nothing. We have already written that in the absence of a Russian-speaking instructor at the resort, it is recommended to start a training course in your hometown: the theory is much easier to master in your native language, and the first practical lessons in the pool will help the diver navigate international terminology and find a common language with a foreign instructor. Firstly, many words in diving are borrowed from the English language, and, secondly, you can always ask the instructor to voice one or another detail in English. Usually divers from all over the planet who already have some kind of diving experience understand each other perfectly.
