What is the difference between mountain tourism and sports mountaineering

How to choose cats

Overcoming your fear, you climb up and down the cliff.

And if your first clumsy steps on the rocky route evoked emotion (like seeing a baby taking his first steps in life), now it's time to hone your skills, turning it into professionalism.

The category that can be obtained only by participating in competitions will serve as a "tasty candy" as a reward.

As in many sports, the highest grade in rock climbing is an international master of sports.

The path to such a title should be started from the third grade, then - the second, first, CCM and master of sports.

It's pretty easy to get to a candidate for master of sports, the main thing is desire. And also participation in competitions - even at the city level, decent results can be achieved.

Discharge can serve as a motivation for this sport if you are obsessed with sports interest. Although, in addition to the sports direction, one can also distinguish in rock climbing simply health-improving, as well as extreme.

How climbers compete

There is a gradation of rocky routes.

Difficulty is determined by an Arabic numeral and three English letters (A, B, C).

The category of the route is determined by the difficulty and duration of the rocky trails. For example, 3A is a vertical wall with comfortable holds, the route of category 7A should be easily handled by the CCM, and route 9A is within the power of a very great professional.

Mountaineering, classical or technical mountaineering, ice climbing, mixed - in all these sports, cats are indispensable. Without this device, it is very difficult to safely and confidently move on ice, snow, firn (packed dense snow) and icy rocks.

Any person, even far from mountaineering, knows what cats are - a metal device with sharp teeth that attaches to the sole of boots and makes it easier to move on ice and snow.

Today, manufacturers offer a wide range of cat models designed for a wide variety of conditions - from simple glacier walks to extreme mixed climbing. Different construction, which can be softer or more aggressive, helps to adapt crampons to all kinds of mountain routes.

To choose the right cats, you need to figure out how the models sharpened for different types of mountain sports fundamentally differ from each other, and which of these types you plan to practice.

General arrangement of cats

Most modern cats consist of separate front (under the toe of the boot) and back (under the heel) parts, fastened with a connecting dimension bar. The front and back are equipped with sharp teeth, which can be of different shapes and degrees of strength. Also, crampons are equipped with a special mount for boots.

Dimensional connecting strips, as a rule, are made of steel and differ from each other in shape (straight or curved), length and number of holes. The bar helps to fit the crampons to your size and type of shoe.

Today it is rare to find models with a solid rigid platform - they are becoming a thing of the past (for example, large manufacturers Petzl and Black Diamond do not present such a variation in the model range). The modern plank fastening of the front and back of cats is not less stable than platform ones, and, as a rule, weighs less.

Anti-slip is a durable rubber or plastic backing for the front and back of the crampons, thanks to which snow does not stick between the teeth. Snow build-up is potentially dangerous: it reduces traction and can cause stalling. Anti-slip is especially effective when walking in wet snow, but when climbing on ice or mixed terrain, it is not necessary. Each cat model has its own anti-slip models, as a rule, they are not included with cats, but are purchased separately.

Front Teeth Types for Different Cat Models

The fundamental difference between the teeth in different cat models is their location and shape, the presence of notches, the ability to adjust the position of the teeth and replace them. The number of teeth is not the most important factor; on average, their number varies between 10-14 pieces.

Mountaineering, trekking and ski climbing crampons usually have wide, flat front teeth that cannot be replaced or adjusted. This design helps to confidently move on soft snow and ice terrain, but is ineffective for climbing.
