Mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria

Excursion to Kabardino-Balkaria, which cost only 1.5 thousand rubles

One of the visiting cards of the republic, located within the Caucasian mountain range, is an extremely diverse and picturesque relief, in particular, the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria are famous, which are very popular with tourists. It is during mountain excursions that you can fully enjoy the natural resources of the region, from numerous lakes and dense forests to breathtaking panoramas from breathtaking heights.

Most of the names of the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria have long been heard by active travelers, but noteworthy features of some of them should be mentioned.

Elbrus

It is easy to answer the question which mountain in Kabardino-Balkaria enjoys the greatest fame.

No wonder "Elbrus" is translated from Persian as "high mountain". Being the highest mountain in Kabardino-Balkaria, this eternally snow-covered extinct volcano is also considered the highest point in Russia and Europe (5642 meters).

Thanks to this iconic feature, as well as the recognized health properties of local recreation, Elbrus has become the most visited mountain in Kabardino-Balkaria. To date, the summit is perfectly adapted for tourist ascent: there are several proven ascent routes, both to the Eastern and Western summits, along the southern and northern slopes; cable cars have been built, as well as numerous restaurants and hotels for holidaymakers.

Ullu-Tau

Of particular importance in Kabardino-Balkaria is Mount Ullu-Tau, which is also known as Mother Mountain.

Being a part of the Elbrus national reserve, Mother Mountain in Kabardino-Balkaria is also considered a sacred place, about which there are many legends. There is a belief that this mountain fulfills the cherished desires of those who decide to climb it. However, in order to achieve the desired effect, it is necessary to observe certain rules: when climbing, one should abandon the meat and benefits of civilization, perform a special ritual in the form of meditation-prayer, and then write your most sincere desire on a piece of cloth and tie it to a tree.

The stories about the cure of infertility are remarkable. The women who visited the summit with such a request were extremely surprised when Ullu-Tau, Mother Mountain of Kabardino-Balkaria, really fulfilled their desire to become parents.

Mount Ullu-Tau in Kabardino-Balkaria is also considered a powerful source of power that modern science cannot explain. For centuries, shamans have performed traditional rituals there, and local residents and tourists have noticed some anomalies. For example, in the village of Eltyubu, time flows in a completely different way, which is noticeable by the clock, which is either late or stops running altogether.

Dykhtau

The second highest mountain after Elbrus in Kabardino-Balkaria is Dykhtau, "Steep Mountain" 5204 meters high, which many tourists dream of conquering. However, climbing it is extremely dangerous due to the steep slopes and hanging glaciers, due to which the mountain was also dubbed "Zubchaty". Do not forget about the regular avalanches and rockfalls that make the climb feasible only for the most experienced climbers.

Mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria

On a mini-vacation in the Caucasus, we stopped in Pyatigorsk and from there we traveled radially to neighboring cities. We decided to go on an organized excursion to Upper Balkaria.

For this money we were promised: Chegem waterfalls. Blue Lake. Cherek gorge. The village of Upper Balkaria with an ancient tower and the ruins of aul. And finally - swimming in a thermal spring.

What did we get? And what was cool from the route, and what did not like it very much:

Chegem waterfalls

This was the first point of our route. For some reason, our guide decided that we should take a walk here for 2 hours and left us. Later it turned out that she drove off to the Chegem mountain park, to fly a paraglider while we were freezing in the Chegem gorge. (provincial customs, probably).

Two hours is a lot for this place, out of boredom we had time to try all kinds of nuts from merchants and bought strange beech nuts - "chinariki", for some reason I had never met such nuts before.

In general, I liked it, I have long wanted to visit the Chegem gorge. But now I am planning an independent trip in my car to go upstream of the river. They say there is a "City of the Dead", like the famous Ossetian Dargavs.

I wrote in more detail about what to see in the Chegem gorge here: Chegem waterfalls

Blue Lake

In general, these are several lakes, but as part of our excursion we visited only the lower one. The lake is dead, filled with hydrogen sulfide and very deep. This is a karst sinkhole with a depth of more than 300 meters. It is considered inviolable by the locals who never touch this water. But visitors arrange diving here.

The mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria are magnificent and multifaceted for travel and recreation. If you want to spend your vacation in the mountains of Kabardino Balkaria, it will be useful for you.

Kabardino-Balkaria is a mix of adventure, winter sports and outdoor activities. People come here all year round; a separate program is organized for each season. Let's see what Kabardino-Balkaria offers for winter vacations, what format happens, the nuances of the trip.

Kabardino-Balkaria winter vacation

things to do

Upon arrival in Kabardino-Balkaria, rare tourists prepare an entertainment program in advance. It is assumed that already on the spot it will become clear what to do. If you are in this category of travelers, consider ready-made ideas.

Enjoy Elbrus from Cheget

Chair lifts will take you up to a height of 3 kilometers along Mount Cheget. From here you can clearly see the glacier with the name Semyorka, Elbrus and its 2 peaks. In winter, you can go skiing or snowboarding in this area.

Freewriting lovers have a lot of space here, the territory is large. Compliance with safety measures in these parts is valued most of all, the region is avalanche-prone.

Take a ride on the Elbrus cable car

It lifts tourists to an altitude of more than 3400 meters and is considered the highest cable car in all of Europe. If you wish, you can climb even higher, already using a snowmobile or snowmobile.

From the very top of the cable car there is a fantastic view of the Caucasian ridge. It seems that you can touch the top of Elbrus with your hand. Photos are atmospheric and bright even without Photoshop.

Elbrus also has a ski resort. There are more opportunities for the guests of the complex, routes are developed for guests of varying degrees of preparation.

Visit the Goat Market (Balkar Market)

It is located in Nalchik and is considered one of the most popular markets in Kabardino-Balkaria (hereinafter referred to as KBR). Here you can buy souvenirs for friends and things as a keepsake.

ATTENTION! For foreign citizens (and citizens of the CIS countries), a pass to the border zone is required, an application for a pass must be submitted 2 months before the trip. For registration, please contact the coordinator. Choose your trip dates in advance! It is enough for Russians to simply have a passport with them.

The Chegem Gorge is located in the mountainous part of Kabardino-Balkaria. It differs from other gorges in Kabardino-Balkaria in that the road runs almost along its bottom, and the gorge is very narrow and has high steep walls. The narrowest part of the gorge does not exceed 16-20 meters, and the height of the walls in this place reaches 200-300 meters.

Where the gorge is cut through by the Rocky Range, the narrowest part of it, a gorge, has formed. In two places, waterfalls rush into Chegem from the walls of the gorge. Especially impressive are the waterfalls located in the depths of the gorge, called Su-Auzu (water throat). Behind the Skalisty ridge, near the village of Verkhniy Chegem, there are many monuments of "deep antiquity" (towers, burial grounds). At the end of the gorge, on the Main ridge, Mount Tikhtengen rises 4,617 meters. Large glaciers are concentrated here, giving rise to the Chegemu River. A lot of extreme entertainment can be tried here: paragliding, hang gliding, rope jumping, trolls and, of course, mountaineering. The Chegem gorge is rightfully considered the most beautiful gorge in the Caucasus.

Accommodation in the national guest house of the indigenous people of Kabardino-Balkaria gives a certain flavor to the mountain camp. The house was built by our own hands and is kept in amazing cleanliness, because by the standards of the village it is not at all small. The hospitable hostess will be happy to tell you about the way of life of the people and share recipes for dishes. Despite the fact that here, in El-Tyubu, time seems to have stopped, the house has Wi-fi.

For those who wish there is a winter version of this program: . poxod. u/route/caucasus/gornyj-lager-v-cegemskom-usele-zimnaa-program

Depending on the weather conditions, the condition of the group members, the instructor can make changes to the route.

Daily program

Day

We sit down in a minibus in Nalchik, and the adventure begins. In an hour's drive we will see two Chegem waterfalls at once - the lower and the upper. They are located not far from each other, but at the same time they are completely different! Here, in a narrow gorge, there are cafes with national cuisine and a market for local residents. Unusual and a bit noisy. But we are moving further - into the depths of the gorge - beyond the mountainous silence.

In the village of El-Tyubu, a guest house and the first joint dinner await us. We settle down at home and get to know each other.

Day

Today our main goal is to get as close as possible to Mount Tikhtengen (4617 m). We sit down on an off-road car and drive 25 km deep into the gorge.

Mountain camp for a cozy holiday in the Caucasus Mountains. Here you will get acquainted with the history of Kabardino-Balkaria, national cuisine and the way of life of its people. Daily light walks with views of the gorges, waterfalls and peaks of the Caucasus. Lovers of varied recreation will be doubly happy - paragliding, horseback riding and extreme rope jumping - all this awaits you in the Chegem mountain camp!

When I remember our trip, the first thing that comes before my eyes is, of course, the mountains: harsh, with steep cliffs, narrow paths, with caps of snow and castles of frozen waterfalls - silent and unshakable. All.
