Also called tape bikes or ashanbikes (according to the name of the stores in which they are often sold), they are produced in the form of hardtails, rigids and double suspensions. These are bicycles of the lower price range, in fact, they are road bicycles, only superficially similar to mountain bikes. Mountain bikes do not have the strength and reliability of mountain bikes, the equipment (rear suspension, suspension fork, disc brakes, transmission) looks almost like the real thing, but it works unsatisfactorily for its intended purpose, often breaks down. They are considered potentially dangerous (!), Especially for children using them for extreme skiing.

General Purpose

General Purpose Mountain Bike

These are already full-fledged mountain bikes, sometimes called "all-terrain bikes" (ATB). Simple, reliable and sturdy models with aluminum frames, suitable for cruising and easy hikes off asphalt roads. Price range - Low to Above Average, major components perform satisfactorily and attachments are not lightweight. As a rule, a low level heavy suspension fork is installed, which is characterized by low reliability. On bikes of this level, it is quite possible to start competing in cross-country races. There is a rack mount, but often poorly thought out. Two-hangers are rare in this class.

  • Tourist bicycles - tailored for cycling tourism. They are equipped with extra strong frames, often made of chrome-molybdenum steel, strong wheels, well thought-out mounts for the trunk (often for the front one on the fork), usually have no shock absorption.
  • Fat bikes - sharpened for moving on snow, sand and mud. They have tires with a thickness of 3.7 "on rims with a width of 60 mm, a special frame design and other modifications.

Racing Bikes

From a certain price point, mountain bikes become specialized for a particular sport.

The new law on tourism will take into account the lessons of the pandemic

Even if you are an experienced cyclist on the streets or cycle paths, mountain biking requires a set of specific skills unique to each terrain and off-road riding experience. Even if you've ridden through the woods many times, these tips can help you hone your skills and enjoy even more!

Decrease tire pressure

The general rule of thumb for cycling on hard surfaces is that you adhere to the maximum recommended tire pressure. This provides a smoother, more productive ride and is better protection against flat tires and wheel damage when driving in holes. However, when you are driving on a mountain trail, you need to do the opposite - the air pressure in the tires should be the minimum recommended or slightly higher. For standard mountain bike tires, this is roughly 35-40 psi (1 lb/in 2 = 07 kg/cm2). This gives you the best grip possible when riding over smooth roots, rocks and just dirt.

Even if the bike has shock absorbers, the tires are really the first line of defense against bumps in the path. If the tires are inflated with too much pressure, will you feel how you start to bounce? beating off his ass. Lower tire pressure helps to make the ride smoother, allowing better control of the bike, not to mention less bumps in the hands and other parts of the body.

Keep in mind that this is a compromise, the lower the tire pressure you use, the wider the impact area against the edges of stones and other sharp obstacles will get. But the most experienced cyclists find it worth it for the traction and control they get.

Use the front and rear brakes the same

This is a good general rule of thumb for all types of cycling, but it is especially important for several reasons when you are mountain biking. Balancing the front and rear brakes will allow you to control speed with less chance of locking any wheel. If the front wheel locks up, this is an almost guaranteed way to unintentionally fly over the steering wheel. If the rear wheel locks up, the rear tire will slip and you could lose control.

Some situations require quick braking to alternate between quick braking and descent to avoid wheel blocking, this mimics the anti-lock braking system found in many modern cars.

Uphill: forward weight; from the mountain: weight back

As you drive up a steep incline, the front wheel will tend to lift off the ground, involuntarily forcing you to ride only on the rear wheel.

To counteract this, lean forward with your nose slightly behind the wheel. Keep your buttocks on the seat, but quickly move to the edge of the seat.

This shifts the center of gravity forward, keeping weight on the rear wheel, preventing loss of traction and pulling to the sidelines.

When descending, the problem is exactly the opposite - the bike will tend to roll over forward. To prevent this, stand on the pedals (keeping your knees bent and tilted) and slide the body back slightly over the edge of the seat. In extremely technically challenging downhill conditions, some cyclists lean so far back that the seat presses on the intestines, and the buttocks hang so that they almost touch the rear wheel. This shifts the center of gravity towards the rear of the bike, transferring more weight to the rear wheel, and helps keep the bike upright.

The current rules for the tourism market were adopted in 1996 and are focused primarily on protecting Russian travelers abroad. Now the country faces another task - to develop domestic resorts.

A healthy lifestyle is becoming more and more popular, and with it the number of cycling fans is growing. Today you can buy a mountain bike on open street sites, in a hypermarket, in a specialized sports store and, of course, on the Internet. I decided to compare the quality of service at different retail outlets and buy a brand new bike.

Street playground

Outdoor outlets are most often located near busy highways. This allows you to make a purchase without spending a lot of time looking for a bicycle dealer. Having walked around several such sites, I was pleasantly surprised by the availability of warranty coupons, service books.

I was given a ride on the selected model, however, I was asked to leave a deposit. If you choose an expensive bike or plan to buy two bikes at once, sellers start bargaining themselves, offering a discount.

I didn’t like that I didn’t see price tags on the product at any point, which gives the seller complete freedom of pricing. The second drawback is the presence of scratches, dirt, and in some cases even rust on the offered products. Naturally, the goods belong to the lowest price category - ashanbikes.

Hypermarket

The next bike store I decided to visit was a hypermarket. There were brand new bikes not far from vegetables and fruits. However, when asked for advice, I was told that there are no special consultants in the store, and the existing staff is not versed in bicycles. The advantage of shopping here is the opportunity to buy a mountain bike without being distracted from everyday activities. The downside is the presence of the cheapest models from China (yes, again ashanbikes), which are distinguished by poor assembly and lack of settings.

Sports Store

The sports bike shop, which I visited, pleased me with a rich assortment of models, a wide selection of necessary accessories and clothing for cycling. The staff is well trained and ready to find the best model for you.

Its main disadvantages are the relatively high price level and cooperation with a certain brand (although there are multi-brand ones). This is due to the fact that such stores are usually representatives of brands and provide warranty and post-warranty service, and cheap bicycles are not of high quality and do not have official support in principle. Since a trip to such a store will be planned, it is worth inquiring in advance about the direction of its work.

Since the German inventor professor Karl von Drez invented a device that vaguely resembled a modern bicycle, and this was back in the early nineteenth century, this mode of transport has gradually gained popularity among all sectors of society. The first name for the bike was "running machine". Such a bicycle did not have pedals, but was assembled on a wooden frame. And the first invented a bicycle with a chain drive was the Englishman John Kemp Starley, this happened already by the end of the nineteenth century. The name of such a bike was given to "Wanderer" (English Rover). It is he who is considered the ancestor of all modern models.

The modern bicycle is somewhat different from its ancestor

The bike frame is constantly being improved. They come up with more and more new, strong, light frames, using various metal combinations for production. New, more reliable gear shifting mechanisms are invented, bicycles are divided into different subspecies, designed for a purely narrow focus. Modern bikes are divided:

  • for road, road, mountain, track, tourist;
  • even so-called hybrid bicycles are made.

All of these models have characteristics designed for use in a specific area with a characteristic road surface.

Cycling in the Russian Empire and the USSR

Cycling is a movement that originated in the Russian Empire towards the end of the nineteenth century. In 1895, in the city of St. Petersburg, a society of cycling tourism lovers was created, the so-called Russian touring club. This date can be considered the beginning of cycling tourism. The reason for the creation of the club was the spread of two-wheeled bicycles as a form of fast movement over long distances. At the same time, there was a split between cyclists and athletes. Some have created the movement of athletes, while others have opened cycling tourism in Russia. The touring club began to focus on group cycling along a pre-paved path. Enthusiasts have developed new routes for group cycling trips.

Cycling tourism was widely spread by the mid-twenties during the Soviet era. Then social movements began to be created, which united cyclists from all major cities. Numerous groups of cyclists organized trips along the roads of the country over very long distances. One group was able to drive two and a half thousand kilometers along the roads of Bashkiria, spending a little more than twenty days on it. At the same time, another group covered the distance between Ufa and Novosibirsk in just over a month. The main peak of cycling tourism was in the late seventies - early eighties. Then, cycling tourist routes were organized throughout the country along the entire Black Sea coast.

Cycling tourism in Russia collapsed with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The routes of groups of cyclists were often robbed. Only towards the end of the nineties - the beginning of the two thousandths, this movement began to regain its popularity in Russia. Routes along the golden ring of Russia began to enjoy special demand. Today, this type of tourism has gradually begun to gain momentum. Tours to the Black Sea coast began to be organized again. These tours are conducted in scenic spots accompanied by a specialized vehicle that ensures the safety of the group of cyclists and provides them with technical assistance in case of a bike breakdown. The organizers of such tours provide all the necessary equipment and equipment, which makes cycling in Russia affordable and safe.

Cycling Destinations

A large selection of different types of bicycles has allowed cycling tourism itself to be divided into several directions. Each of these directions involves passing the route with varying degrees of comfort. Tours are organized in which cycling tourism is implemented in a rather extreme form. This direction is called a bicycle trial.

Trial cycling is overcoming a route with artificial or natural obstacles. If the route runs through a wooded area, fallen logs, ravines or a small swamp are obstacles in the path of the cyclist. In the mountains, the cyclist must overcome small mountain slopes and gorges. To pass this route, a special bicycle is used, which does not have a saddle in its design. Such cycling tourism is very popular among young people, therefore bike trials tours are organized throughout Russia.

Expeditionary cycling tourism is another extreme type. Such a tour involves a long hike along forest or taiga paths with a tent camp. And the more difficult the route, the more obstacles on the way of cyclists, the more successful the bike trip is considered. The expedition tour refers to the so-called wild bike tourism. It is organized by purely amateurs and enthusiasts without any support from a special technical support vehicle. A very risky type of cycling trip for life and health. For such trips, hybrid bikes are used, which have incorporated the characteristics of mountain and road bikes.

A bicycle is not just a means of transportation, it brings a lot of positive emotions and health. Many cyclists simply come to a standstill and do not know which mountain bike brand is better, and which manufacturer to give preference to.

There are a large number of high-tech bicycle machines in the world. But which of them are distinguished by the best quality and consumer characteristics, we will consider in this article. Modern models are very similar to each other, differ only in the name of the manufacturer and functionality. This article will help you make the right choice and buy exactly the bike that will be convenient and practical for you.

Which brand is the best mountain bike?

A good and high-quality bike is not cheap, and therefore, its choice should be treated responsibly. In order to finally decide on the choice, it is necessary to take into account a number of several criteria that will become the basis for your choice. These include:

  • Purpose of acquisition. Whether you play sports on it, the bike will be designed for street movement or for mountain skiing;
  • Road quality. You must decide on which roads you will drive, on unpaved or on asphalt;
  • Season. For what season it will be designed. If for winter, then you need to buy a bicycle with hydraulic disc brakes;
  • Body weight and height. These are very important criteria for choosing a bike. People weighing over 100 kg need to buy a bike with a sturdy frame;
  • The price factor. Before buying a bike, you decide on its cost. The cheapest bikes are suitable for regular riding. The middle price segment is characterized by bicycles intended for sports tourism. Professional models used by athletes are the most expensive.

If you are still at a loss as to which company to choose a bike, and for what purposes you need it, be sure to use these criteria during the purchase.

Types of bicycle transport

In order to finally opt for a particular model, you need to familiarize yourself with the types of bicycle transport.

This list of bicycles is not final, these are only the most basic and demanded models. There are many more options that deserve attention as well.
