Arrival, excursions, acquaintance

Early in the morning we meet at the train station. ... railway station in the town of Mineralnye Vody. Here is the bus that will take us to our guest house in the village of Arkhyz. A comfortable asphalt road takes only about three hours.

Not far from our destination, we will stop to walk through the Nizhne-Arkhyz historical and architectural archaeological complex. It sounds serious, but it will be interesting: we will see very old dilapidated temples and a sundial.

After that it's time to eat! Let's go to the dining room.

Afterwards, with renewed vigor, we go on an excursion to the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences - to look at the largest telescope in Eurasia.

We are settling in. If we have time, we will walk through the village of Arkhyz.

Trails and lifts

When creating GLK Arkhyz, the world experience of creating such resorts was taken into account and advanced technologies were applied. Now the tracks and lifts of Arkhyz are not only the pride of the resort, but also the standard for the creation of other ski complexes.

Initially, the resort had 8 tracks, all of them located on the southern slope. In January 2019, trails were launched on the northern slope, where trails and lifts were built for a year and a half. The length of the tracks varies from 600 meters to 4 kilometers, and the elevation changes from 60 to 800 meters. The opening of the second slope has added space to the lovers of alpine skiing and snowboarding.

In 2019, 14 ski slopes were opened in Arkhyz, all of them have a different level of difficulty: “green” slopes for beginners, “blue” ones for more experienced skiers and snowboarders, complex “red” slopes are provided for professionals difficulty level, and for extreme lovers - "black" slopes.

A very young, but already deserved recognition of vacationers, ski resort Arkhyz is located on the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia. It received its first guests in December 2013, and during its work has met more than a million people, received several awards and continues to develop rapidly.

The ski slopes of Arkhyz are suitable for both beginners and professionals, in 2020 and 2021 everything is created here for the convenience of vacationers: comfortable hotels, lifts go straight from their territory, there are quite affordable cafes and restaurants.

Ski season

The first snow usually falls in November, but it is quite difficult to ride on it. When the weather is stable, there is a lot of snow here, so there is no lack of it on the slopes.

The ski season in Arkhyz lasts from December to April. Of course, the weather conditions can make their own adjustments to this calendar.

In winter at the resort you can not only ride, but also become participants or spectators of various competitions and festivals, which are often held on the local slopes.

Be sure not to be caught off guard by accidents. When choosing an active holiday, take out insurance. You can handle any mountain!

Length and difficulty of tracks

14 ski slopes are open in Arkhyz in 2020 and 2021: three green ones for beginners, five blue ones for more challenging ones, four red ones for experienced riders and two black ones for extreme riders. The total length of equipped slopes is 24 kilometers.

Nizhny Arkhyz is the capital of the Scythian state in the X-XII centuries. Here, from the coast of the Black Sea, a branch of the Great Silk Road passed through the mountains along which Christian traditions from Byzantium penetrated deep into the mainland. At present, Nizhniy Arkhyz is an open-air museum-reserve: old temples, menhirs and foundations of ancient buildings; a vivid example of fresco painting "Arkhyz face", discovered by archaeologists in 1999. Near the stars of Arkhyz, on the spur of Mount Pastukhov, at an altitude of 2070 m above sea level, there is the world's largest astrophysical observatory.

Today we are going on a mountain hike with the kids! The route is circular, one-day, from the Sofia Valley (1990 meters) to the Sofia saddle pass (2558 meters) and back. One of the most popular and simple routes, which is suitable for tourists without experience and will introduce you to the amazing nature of Arkhyz!

Next - an overview of the 7-hour 8-kilometer scenic route with rocky trails, mountain streams and waterfalls, snow-capped peaks of the Western Caucasus.

General description of the trek through Arkhyz

From 19 to 23 August 2019, we spent 5 days in the Caucasus, in the Arkhyz mountains. We are four adults and two children 9 and 10 years old. We organized a real mountain hike with tents, went 2 difficult routes: to the Sofia lakes and to the Sofia saddle, visited the all-season resort "Arkhyz".

Travel announcement and Diary are available via links as separate publications. All reviews on one page can be found under the Arkhyz-2019 tag.

All traversed routes on one map:

  • August 19, training hike to the Sofia saddle
  • August 20, hike through the Irkiz pass to the Sofia lakes and Aimatly-Dzhagaly lake (details - Hike with children to Sofia Lakes: an overview of the one-day route)
  • August 21, climbing the Sofia saddle
  • August 22, afternoon, swimming in the mountain pool

Next - a story about the fifth day of our trip, an overview of the route from the Sofia Valley (where we left the base camp with all our things) to the Sofia Saddle pass and back. The route is marked with a purple line on the map.

Brief geographical information. The Sofia Valley is located between the Sofia ridge and the Chaget-Chat ridge, and ends with the Sofia Saddle pass. The gorge and valley, as well as the lakes and waterfalls located there, got their name from Mount Sofia - the highest mountain of the ridge of the same name (3637 meters).

Route to Sofia Saddle from Sofia Valley

The fifth day of our trip to Arkhyz. The plans are to make a second attempt and climb the Sophia saddle pass (the story of the first unsuccessful attempt is here).

We left camp late, around 10:40 am (it would be better early, but needed some rest after yesterday's 11-hour hike). At the top left is a pass shaped like a saddle. This is the Sofia saddle pass, the height is 2558 meters, the category of difficulty, if it is found in the classifiers, is "1A" (the simplest of the categorical ones). If there is no snow and rain, it is more correct to consider the pass as uncategorized.
