Automotive tourism

I'm, of course, not the most ardent fan of driving kilometers on my favorite typewriter, but somehow it so happened that in 2016 we traveled a lot by car. For 3 weeks of the July autotravel to Altai, we covered more than 11 thousand km. And if you count all our trips for the first half of 2016. then all 15 thousand km will come out. I can say with confidence that I have sufficient experience in trips, both long and short. Therefore, I decided to compile my personal list of the pros and cons of traveling by car, based on past experiences.

The pros of traveling by car

When you go on a trip by car, especially several thousand kilometers from home, you see a constant change of landscapes outside the window. Now slender rows of birches, then picturesque meadows, then forests, then mountains and a road that winds among the peaks and goes into the distance. Also, the climate changes imperceptibly, one day you wake up and you realize that it has somehow become warmer, or vice versa, it is colder, depending on where you want to go.

And to be aware of the huge path that you have come is very cool. The amount of experience from a road trip is much higher than from an airplane. By air, you once - and flew, and do not see anything except the airports of departure and arrival. By car, you observe the entire, sometimes difficult and long, journey from one city to another. You are gaining invaluable experience. You watch how people live in the outback or in large cities. After 11 thousand kilometers across Russia, I came home as a different person, my opinion about our country changed. Previously, I did not understand how huge it really is and how many interesting things you can see along the way. The same applies not only to Russia, but also to neighboring countries - you will get to know the country much better if you drive along their roads by car.

A huge plus - there is always an opportunity to change your plans. You yourself are the master of your journey. You can safely cross out some points from the route or stay longer in the place you like. Did you notice something interesting along the way? You are free to stop and spend as much time studying as you want. No framework, just absolute freedom of action.

I'll tell you about my autotrip again. ? We spent 31 thousand rubles (95 gasoline) for 11.5 thousand km. Dividing this amount for four passengers, you understand that it is very cheap! And the car was heavily laden: the trunk was half full of canned food, half of things. There's also a jam-packed roof box.

If we got to Altai by plane, we would spend 2 times more, at least. The car trip turned out to be very economical. Traveling by car is very beneficial if you share the cost of gasoline and consumables with fellow travelers.

Since the car is always near, and all things are in it, the process of finding the right things is simplified. There is no need to use a suitcase. In a car, it is easier to arrange everything wisely, so that if necessary, you can quickly find a thing.

We usually put everything in bags, backpacks and a big bag. The bag contains all the clothes. In backpacks - things for hiking, camping, etc., depending on the type of trip. The rest of the things are in packages. A separate "kitchen" package is required: dishes, all sorts of spices and the like. It is very convenient: I got to a halt, took out the necessary food and a bag with kitchen utensils, and did not waste time searching.

Pros and cons of traveling by car: a personal view

History of Automotive Tourism

The first travel by private car began to be made with the development of the automotive industry at the beginning of the 20th century, but this type of tourism gained the greatest popularity in the post-war period. During this period, car companies began to actively produce new models of personal transport, and states began to build long highways.

Autotourism developed most dynamically in the United States, where in the middle of the 20th century, due to the rapid growth in the well-being of citizens and the well-established automobile industry, travel by personal transport became widespread.

Today, specialized agencies provide services for tourist travel by car. They are engaged in the development of routes, the selection of hotels, campgrounds and hostels, booking ferries and issuing visas. Nevertheless, this type of travel has become the most attractive precisely for the reason that tourists have the opportunity to plan their trip on their own and without assistance, without adjusting to the train and airplane schedules.

One of the most popular types of car tourism has been and remains travel Caravanning and Safari. Many travel companies offer car travel in Africa as a special service. The most suitable car for this is an SUV. A classic example of an SUV for this kind of travel is the unpretentious and hardy Defender.

Automobile tourism in Russia

For a long time, auto tourism in the USSR was exclusively domestic, and only since the 90s of the XX century, Russians began to travel outside the country.

The most popular destinations for Russian car travelers are the cities of the Golden Ring, Altai Territory, Karelia; in Europe - Scandinavian countries, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, France.

In 2008, Russia recorded a significant increase in domestic car tourism in the Krasnodar Territory [1].
