In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the beginning of the creation of a unified network of recommended tourist routes with active modes of movement has been laid, the project “The Roads We Choose”. In June 2018, thanks to the financial support of the Presidential Grants Fund, the public organization "Nizhny Novgorod Regional Tourist Club" (NGO "NOTK") launched its project - "The Roads We Choose".

The essence of the project is to create a single List of recommended and certified tourist routes, lasting from 1 to 15 days, with active modes of movement (kayaks, rafts, bicycles, skiing, on foot) in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Routes that all residents and guests of the region who are keen on sports tourism or who just want to join it will be able to use absolutely free of charge.

The main purpose of the development of this Project is to popularize various types of active tourism and, which is especially important, to increase the level of safety on active routes. To achieve this goal, the Project envisages the installation of information stands and signs, the construction of tourist camps, and the marking of hiking trails. At the moment, work has been completed on equipping eight active routes. These are three water routes and five hiking trails:

The routes pass through the territories of 17 districts of the Nizhny Novgorod region. On the routes, 35 tourist sites have been erected, 477 km of hiking trails have been marked, 44 information stands and 50 signs have been installed, detailed passports and route maps, GPS tracks have been created.

In the course of work on the Project, the staff of the NGO "NOTK" encountered a problem, although quite understandable and expected. The problem is that the majority of the population of our region has not previously encountered marked trails, and therefore tourist markings, especially the part that passes through the territory of settlements, causes bewilderment among people, and, at times, even fear. In this regard, we decided to acquaint potential visitors of the marked trails with the features of the marking.

Tourist markings are nothing more than a system of special symbols applied to various objects (trees, stones, supports, etc.) or to specially installed structures (pillars, shields) for marking recommended tourist routes.

Marking includes various types of marks, direction arrows, route indicators and other signs, which in their symbols, shape, color and alphanumeric code carry travel information necessary for a tourist about directions and distances to tourist and excursion objects inspection, about places intended for halts, natural obstacles and dangerous areas, about recommended or prohibited forms of behavior of tourists on the route.

The main task of marking tourist routes is to help a tourist or vacationer in the best way and with the least difficulty in making the intended hike, excursion or walk. Ensuring the safety of travelers is one of the main purposes of tourist labeling. The marking and marking of safe tourist trails significantly increases the safety of hikers, reduces hiking traumatism and improves the sanitary and hygienic conditions for outdoor activities.

Labeling is one of the measures to enhance environmental protection. The fact is that the marking concentrates people on the road and path network, equipped camp sites, territories prepared in advance for tourists to visit, and transfers the main burden on nature from large areas to limited areas.

Route schemes, information boards, route signs, on which a more or less exhaustive situation on the route, as well as in its immediate vicinity, is shown in text or symbols, is the most informative.

The primary element of the system of conventional travel signs is a route mark - a sign symbolizing the belonging of a particular point of the area to a certain tourist route. The purpose of the brand is to maintain the tourist's confidence in the correct movement along the route, which is usually prompted by the direction of the road, trail, ski track, water flow.
