About Saratov

Saratov is a colorful, noisy, multinational city in the southeast of Russia, which grew up on the border of Europe and Asia, at the crossroads of cultures and trade routes. The guard fortress was founded between Samara and Tsaritsyn 430 years ago, in 1590. In the 18th century fish and salt were traded here, in the 19th century - grain and flour, and Saratov reached its heyday by the beginning of the 20th century, becoming the largest settlement in the Volga region.

Today, luxurious merchant mansions and grandiose mills, theaters and museums, a conservatory and a university remind of the wonderful past.

In the 20th century, the city entered the history of the exploration of the Universe: Yuri Gagarin lived and studied in Saratov, and in 1961 he landed near it. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this event, it is planned to open the Park of the Conquerors of Space at the Gagarin Field.

In the southeast of the European part of the country there is a city, which is the largest cultural center of the Volga region. Officially, Saratov, according to the census, does not accommodate more than a million inhabitants, but it is here that most of the migrants who are tired of the pathos and chic of megacities rush to permanent residence. I must say that Saratov is in the "golden mean" of the list of the largest and most successful cities in Russia, where 841,900 residents live in 2019. This is almost 3,500 thousand less than in 2017 (845,300 inhabitants). But if we take the region itself, then according to Rosstat, 2,440,729 people live on its territory.

Geographically, the city is located on the right bank of the Volgograd reservoir, approximately equidistant from Volgograd (389 km) and Samara (442 km). This is the southeast direction from the capital.

The year 1590 can be considered the beginning of the history of Saratov. These are the times of the reign of Fyodor Ioannovich, who assumed that the castle would be something like a guard fortress tower, designed to protect the south of Russia.

After the middle of the 18th century, Saratov was positioned as a major transshipment point and trade center specializing in fish and salt, and in the 19th century it was one of the centers of the grain trade. Over the course of time, the city improved and developed. So, since 1780, this is a province, and since the 20th century Saratov has become the largest settlement in terms of population on the great Volga River. In 1909, a university began to function here.

Geographical position and relief of Saratov

The length of the city is over 34 kilometers, which run parallel to the banks of the Volga. It starts from another reservoir - the Guselka river, which flows in a northern direction.

The city center and its southern part are hidden in a hollow, which is reliably protected from the wind by hills and hills. On the one hand, this is an incredibly good location, since the population is protected from the wind, but fresh air is also not enough, so people are drawn to the forests and to the water.

In the west, the forests of Kumysnaya Polyana are spread, but in general, the entire territory of the city is literally in a mathematical order divided into fractions.

Many paths are interspersed with ravines and hills. There are five more ravines with branches in the Volga Basin. The Volgograd reservoir, which, by the way, was formed not so long ago, provoked a rise in the water level in the Volga by 6 m.

Opposite Saratov there are picturesque islands with no less original natural names. Here and Oak Mane, and Zeleny Island, as well as Pokrovskie Sands and Cossack.

It's tempting to visit here, because the flow of tourists does not diminish in the warm season. Naturally, there are road and railway bridges across the Volga, the width of which in some areas reaches 8 km.
