Tours on the Golden Ring of Russia

The Golden Ring is a symbolic ring of Russian cities included in excursions along the Golden Ring of Russia, which have long become classics of tourism in Russia. The route of these tours has become not just the goal of leisure trips for a weekend getaway - it is a touch to Russian history, captured in the unique appearance of cities and architectural ensembles of Russian churches and monasteries.

The Classic Golden Ring consists of 8 cities, remarkable for their monuments of history and culture and located on a virtual circle to the north-east of Moscow. Clockwise from the city closest to the capital, these are: Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great and Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal and Vladimir. Every day hundreds of tourists go here, choosing to travel along the Golden Circle by bus, boat or car. These are trips to cities and towns, regular excursion tours along the Golden Ring plus festive programs and event trips to folk festivals, interactive excursions where everyone becomes a participant, as well as master classes on traditional Russian crafts. All this variety of programs can satisfy any requests of tourists of all ages and categories, including corporate and school groups.

Why go?

Traveling along the Golden Ring of Russia allows you to see the oldest and most important monuments of Russian architecture in a short time, to visit those cities where the most important events of Russian history took place.

The possibility of choosing the duration of travel, which can be calculated both for 2-3 days (weekend tours, trips with children), and for the full 9-10 days required to explore the main cities, is also encouraging. The most popular options are from 2 to 5 days, although there are also many who want to embrace the immense, especially in the summer.

Each of the cities of the Golden Ring boasts a huge number of attractions - ancient churches, monasteries, defensive structures and others.

Among the cities of the Small Ring, Uglich is one of the most popular: it is interesting not only for the events that took place here (the mysterious murder of the heir of Ivan the Terrible, the young Tsarevich Dmitry), but also for the temples that have survived to this day. However, if you have free time, it is worth visiting all the cities on the small list.

Golden Circle Routes

There are a lot of options for excursion programs along the Golden Ring. In addition to the aforementioned classic "eight", the extended route with a loop through the Yaroslavl region is popular - with a visit to Uglich, Myshkin, Rybinsk and Tutaev. Its length is about 1000 km. You can travel along the Golden Ring not only in a circle, but also radially: for example, from Rostov the Great - to the Borisoglebsky monastery, from Yaroslavl - to Tutaev, from Kostroma - to Plyos and Shchelykovo, from Ivanovo - to Shuya and places of folk crafts Palekh, Kholui and Msteru. Most often, such mini-programs include visits to only 4-7 cities.

What exactly to bring from the trip?

Handicrafts and souvenirs from the cities of the Golden Ring are almost more attractive to travelers than monasteries, temples and museums. In addition to the standard assortment - all sorts of things depicting local architectural monuments - almost every town is famous for the exceptional products of its craftsmen.

The Golden Ring is the main tourist route in Russia, full of the most important attractions. Officially, it consists of eight cities (we will consider each of them below). In addition to this, there is also a "small ring", unofficial. The cities of this ring also have a certain value, they just were not officially recognized. Today we will talk about the main attractions of the "official" Golden Ring of Russia.

This city is the very beginning of the Golden Ring. Today it is a major industrial center. And here are the sights of Vladimir that everyone should see.

  • The Assumption Cathedral is a monument of ancient Russian white-stone architecture, 12th century. The cathedral is perfectly preserved; inside there are frescoes by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny. Even before the rise of Moscow in Russia, they were crowned for reign here. Today the Assumption Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
  • Dmitrievsky Cathedral is also a white-stone temple included in the UNESCO list. It was built in the late 90s of the 12th century. The main feature of the Dmitrievsky Cathedral is the white stone carving. All the walls are dotted with reliefs, there are about six hundred of them in total! The reliefs depict animals, saints and mythical creatures;
  • The Golden Gate has existed since 1164. Also included in the lists of protected sites by UNESCO. Used for protection and as a triumphal arch. At one time, the Golden Gate served as the entrance to the richest part of the city;
  • The Church of the Intercession is another white-stone temple included in the UNESCO lists. It is located outside the city limits. There is no exact date of construction, approximately - the middle of the 12th century;
  • The Bogolyubsky Convent is located in the village of Bogolyubovo, Vladimir region. It is located on the territory of the Bogolyubsky castle, the only more or less preserved civil building of pre-Mongol Russia.

The next city of the Golden Ring on the list, among the sights of which the Kremlin and the Museum of Wooden Architecture stand out.

The Suzdal Kremlin is the foundation of the city, it has existed since the 10th century. The prince lived here with his entourage, as well as the bishop. Some of the elements of the Kremlin have survived to this day. The architectural composition includes: the Nativity Cathedral, the Nikolskaya Church and the Bishops' Chambers.

Museum of Wooden Architecture. Here are collected wooden buildings of the 18-19 centuries: they were specially brought to the museum from all over the Vladimir region. The result is a full-fledged street with houses, outbuildings and churches. The Kamenka River flows next to the Museum of Wooden Architecture, which makes it more picturesque.

At the time of Ancient Russia, this city was called Rostov the Great. A must-see attraction here is the 17th century Rostov Kremlin. In fact, this is not exactly the Kremlin: it was built as the residence of the local metropolitan, and not for protection. But the style of construction at the same time imitated the ancient Russian defensive architecture.

The Rostov Kremlin includes, among others:

  • Assumption Cathedral;
  • Four churches;
  • Holy Gates;
  • 11 towers;
  • Chapel.

Another notable cultural and historical site in Rostov is the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery. It has been located near Lake Nero since 1389. Today the monastery includes two cathedrals, a church and a chapel. The centuries of construction of these objects differ.

Replenishing the treasury of your travels with the cities of the Golden Ring is like stringing pearls along with ordinary beads. Each ancient city of the route is special and will be remembered for a long time.

Sergiev Posad with its famous laurel welcomes pilgrims and ordinary tourists from different countries all year round. Here is the Chernigov skete with underground caves.

Pereslavl-Zalessky will impress with numerous museums: iron, wooden toys, steam locomotives ... Here at the Blue Stone people make wishes and return with words of gratitude for what has come true.

Who has not heard of Myshkin, where the figures of rodents are just everywhere? Or Plyos, whose landscapes are captured in Levitan's paintings? These townships are also often included in the program.

Tours along the Golden Ring of Russia are in demand in any season, in 2021 routes with a variable set of cities are offered. Find the one that will be of interest to you.

Traditional route along the Golden Circle

The term "Golden Ring" appeared in the late 1960s. Then the newspaper "Soviet Culture" published a number of publications about the ancient cities of Russia. The name stuck, and later became not just an official, but a real brand, which is known today far beyond the borders of the country.

Traditionally, tours along the Golden Ring of Russia in 2021 include cities:

  • Sergiev Posad near Moscow;
  • Yaroslavl Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great and, in fact, Yaroslavl itself;
  • Kostroma;
  • Ivanovo;
  • Vladimir and his regional city of Suzdal.

Big Golden Ring

Interest in traveling along the Golden Ring grew, more offers for tourists began to appear. Over time, the routes began to include other cities that met along the way. Places that are no less beautiful and rich in history have appeared in the programs. Officially, they do not belong to the brand, nevertheless, such a concept as the Big Golden Ring has become entrenched, it is supplemented by cities:

The Golden Ring of Russia tourist route has not changed for 50 years. And now the ancient and forever young cities of the center of Russia are competing with each other to complete the list and win the fight for a tourist

Arzamas, Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan are striving to enter the Golden Ring. Serpukhov and Uglich have already been adopted. What does belonging to the "Golden Ring" give? Who are they waiting for? What do the authorities and ordinary travel enthusiasts think of this?

Hospitality Economics

In 1967, the journalist of "Soviet Culture" Yuri Bychkov traveled to eight cities (Vladimir, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov, Sergiev Posad, Suzdal, Yaroslavl) and wrote essays about them under the general heading " Gold ring of Russia". He started from Suzdal - the city where, it is believed, the zero kilometer of the unique route is located. The headquarters of the Union of Cities of the Golden Ring is located in Yaroslavl.

Today the route with this name has the status of the most popular and recognizable route in the country. In January, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, representatives of the Yaroslavl Region came up with an initiative to include Uglich in the Golden Ring. The proposal was approved. The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation decided to admit one more city per year to the project.

Church of Demetrius on the Blood in Uglich

For example, Gorodets of the Nizhny Novgorod region will soon prepare an application. "We have now received a conclusion from the Russian Academy of Sciences on the date of the city's foundation," said Alexei Alekhin, director of the department for tourism development and folk arts and crafts in the region. According to the rules, the city must be founded before the 15th century inclusive.

Later, Nizhny Novgorod itself can submit an application - it is believed that at one time Gorky did not get into the project as a closed city full of secret industries.

And there is something to fight for. The Department of Tourism of the Yaroslavl Region announced an increase in tourist traffic by 45% in five months of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017. According to official data, 1.08 million people have visited the region. The authorities associate this interest with the emergence of the brand “Yaroslavia - Russian Gardarika” and the development of thematic routes (“Soviet excursion” to Rybinsk).

“Uglich's entry into the“ Golden Ring of Russia ”is very honorable. This is already the fourth city in our region, which is included in the national project, - said Yulia Rybakova, director of the tourism department of the Yaroslavl region. “It is especially important that Uglich is guided by the priorities of tourism development as a separate branch of the economy.”
