Religious tourism in Diveyevo

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, on the banks of the Vichkinza River, there is Diveevo. The old village was founded in 1559 and was named after its founder, Prince Divei. Being at the intersection of several pilgrimage routes, it often and the wooden church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker built here gave shelter and rest to pilgrim travelers.

In 1767 one of the pilgrims, Agafya Semyonovna Melgunova, began to build a stone church in the village in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. In 1772 it was consecrated, and Agafya decided to form a religious community here. In 1788 she received a gift of land on which the cells were built. For 1.5 centuries since the construction of the church, a monastery was built, and now it is believed that this is one of the four places on earth that the Mother of God took under her patronage - this is where she comes every day. So pilgrims-pilgrims strive to visit the Diveyevo monastery at least once in their lives and be sure to stay in it at least one night in order to receive the blessing of the Mother of God herself. The entire history of the temple is closely connected with the name of the Monk Seraphim of Sarov.

A bit of history

At 15 km from Diveyevo, where Sarov is now located, there was once the famous Sarov desert, in which Seraphim of Sarov lived for 55 years. Having passed through hermitage, pillar-ship, silence and seclusion, he was rewarded with the gifts of healing and insight from God. Coming out of the seclusion in 1825, the Monk Seraphim took upon himself the feat of eldership, accepting all who needed his spiritual help.

Holy springs of Diveyevo as a unique object of excursions with children. The largest springs, their legends and basic information. Rules for visiting baths and holy places.

Believers believe that Diveyevo is under the special patronage of the Mother of God, therefore prayers in the monastery are especially powerful, and the holy springs near the temple have long gained the fame of healing.

Appearance of the Virgin

The Diveyevo Monastery was founded in 1758. Then the rich Ryazan landowner Agafya Melgunova came to the village of Diveyevo. In her youth, Agafya was widowed and took monastic tonsure with the name of Mother Alexandra. Once, Mother Alexandra, who was living in Kiev at that time, after a night prayer, the Mother of God appeared and ordered to go to the north of Russia to found a great monastery. The nun began her journey. On the way from Murom to the Sarov Monastery, where at that time there was a monastery, Mother Alexandra stopped for the night. And then she again had a vision of the Mother of God, who turned to the nun with the words: “This is the very place that I commanded you to look for. And I will always be with you, and I will always visit this place. I will establish here such my abode, which has not been, is not and will never be in the whole world. "

This is how the construction of the monastery began. At first it was just a wooden church, and later the foundation of a stone cathedral was laid.

Under the auspices of Seraphim

After the death of Matushka Alexandra, the Monk Seraphim of Sarov became the patron of the monastery. Seraphim was born on July 19, 1754 in the family of a wealthy merchant. Seraphim's father took contracts for the construction of buildings and, shortly before his death, took up the construction of a cathedral in Kursk. Once the mother of Seraphim took her son with her to a construction site. The boy stumbled and fell from the bell tower. The height was enormous, however, when the frightened mother went downstairs, she found her son safe and sound.

The parents saw this as a special divine providence and decided that their son should devote himself to the monastic life.

Later, young Seraphim fell seriously ill, the doctors said that the boy had only a few days left. However, in a dream, the Mother of God appeared to Seraphim, who healed him.

So that no one interferes with prayer, Seraphim retired to a cell in the forest five kilometers from the monastery. In winter and summer, he wore the same clothes, earned his own food. In order to pacify the flesh, for several years Seraphim ate only grass and desolation, and after that he spent a thousand days in prayer, without leaving a stone in the forest.

At this time, pilgrims began to flock to the outlandish elder. People believed that the prayer of Seraphim of Sarov could heal any disease and help even in the most difficult grief. In addition to the ability to heal the sick, Seraphim also possessed a prophetic gift - there is evidence that the elder predicted the October Revolution and the execution of the royal family. It is no coincidence that even members of the imperial family often turned to Seraphim for advice.

When Seraphim finished his prayer feat and returned to his cell, robbers attacked him. The dashing people knew that among the pilgrims there were also rich people, and they decided to rob the monastery of the holy elder. Seraphim was severely beaten, his head was broken with the butt of an ax, but the elder miraculously returned to life, although he remained hunched over for the rest of his life. The robbers were caught, but Seraphim forgave them and asked to let them go.

Father Seraphim often visited the Diveyevo Monastery and took care of the prosperity of the monastery. After his death on January 2, 1833, Seraphim of Sarov was canonized.

Everyone knows from childhood the proverb “They don’t go to a strange monastery with their own charter” has not only allegorical meaning. The fact is that, despite the external similarity for an outside observer, each monastery has its own rules. And when visiting any monastery, you should familiarize yourself with them.

But even without being a religious person and not knowing all the intricacies of a particular place, you should follow the general rules.

Church Code of Conduct

The first thing to notice is the clothes. You should not dress provocatively in the temple, the excess of jewelry will also be inappropriate. Women should wear knee-length skirts and headdresses. Men, on the other hand, take off their hats and caps when entering the temple. Shorts and short pants are not acceptable for everyone.

For modern women, the issue of clothing comes to the fore. Many people sincerely do not understand how you can travel in skirts? Here, of course, everyone's choice is a matter of choice. But if you know that the tour will include a visit to the monastery, or? moreover, if you yourself want to visit a holy place, take a skirt with you.

Now in churches and monasteries right at the entrance there are places where aprons-skirts made of light fabrics hang (or lie) that can be tied right over clothes. But this is still an extreme option, for those who accidentally find themselves in the temple. For those who are planning to travel in advance, it is better to bring a skirt from home after all.

Silence should be observed in the temple. Turn off cell phones or put them on silent mode. Even if you just want to light a candle or see the interior of the temple. Respect the feelings of believers who have come here to pray.

We must be prepared that during the prayer at the church service, the door of the church can be closed for a while in order to stop the flow of those who walk. Also, at this time, they do not serve at the church box: they do not sell candles and icons, and do not accept notes.

On the territory of the monastery

The monastery is very different from the parish church. When you leave a regular church after a service, you immediately plunge into the familiar secular world. And only your inner attitude can remind you of prayer.

The village of Diveevo is located practically on the border with Mordovia. According to one of the ancient legends, its first owner was Murza Divy, from which this name originated. Ivan the Terrible bestowed upon Divey the title of prince and land for special merits.
