The well-known journalist and honorary member of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (VOOPIK) Yuri Bychkov is considered the author of the very concept of the "Golden Ring". In November 1967, Bychkov drove his car along the planned route: Moscow - Sergiev Posad - Pereslavl-Zalessky - Rostov - Yaroslavl - Kostroma - Ivanovo - Suzdal - Vladimir - Moscow. The result is a ring consisting of ancient cities with priceless architectural monuments and unique culture. As a result of the trip, Yuri Bychkov published a series of essays about ancient Russian cities under the general title "The Golden Ring" - an invitation to travel through the cities of historical North-Eastern Russia. Each essay was accompanied by a diagram of the route along which Bychkov was moving.
Despite the fact that Moscow is the starting point for excursions along the "Golden Ring" and is the center of the Moscow region, the city has not yet been included in the route. However, the number of tourists visiting Moscow this year could approach 18 million visitors - the annual number of tourists visiting the Golden Ring of Russia.
Since 2010, the number of tourists visiting the capital has increased by almost 3 million: from 15 million, of which 3.5 million are foreign tourists, to 18 million, where 4.6 million are foreigners. Most tourists visit Moscow during the Moscow Seasons thematic festivals, each of which attracts several million visitors. Last year, 13 festivals were held and 55 million people attended them. More and more guests come to the capital especially for city events. The most popular was the "Journey to Christmas" festival, after it was held in late 2016 - early 2017, a record for attendance was set.
Most tourists come to the capital from other regions of Russia. In second place are guests from China. During 2012-2016, the number of Chinese tourists arriving at the capital's airports increased from 82 thousand to 291 thousand people. In just five years, more than 840 thousand people have flown in from China; in the first five months of this year, almost 80 thousand Chinese tourists have visited Moscow. The top ten countries with the most active tourist flow also include Germany, Turkey, Israel, France, Italy, USA, UK and Spain. More than 33 percent of foreign tourists come for cultural and educational purposes, slightly less - to visit friends and relatives, and 28 percent come on business. The reason for the growing interest is also the simplification of obtaining or canceling tourist visas.
The Golden Ring includes several routes, from which a tourist can choose a more convenient one, based on his interests, the time he has, and the cost. The routes themselves on the Ring take from a week to a month, depending on the saturation.
The main points of the Golden Ring:
The ring includes 6 regions: Moscow, Vladimir, Kostroma, Tver, Ivanovo and Yaroslavl.
In addition, for a more in-depth study of the treasures of Russia, a number of points are recommended to the tourist:
In many cities of the Golden Ring, a tourist can get acquainted with ancient cathedrals, monasteries, architectural monuments, handicrafts.
The very name "The Golden Ring of Russia" appeared in 1967 with the light hand of journalist Yuri Bychkov, who wrote a series of articles about 8 Russian cities with invaluable historical and cultural heritage, and opened the most interesting routes for tourists all over the world.
Due to their location northeast of Moscow, the devastation of the Patriotic War did not affect the Golden Ring, but, unfortunately, the development of tourism in Russia is still given little attention, as well as its advertising, therefore such wealth (unlike some western sights, sucked from the finger, but untwisted) does not bring the country due dividends.
That is, there is little advertising, there is even less infrastructure, especially for a spoiled Western tourist. The situation is already beginning to change, but, as usual in our country, slowly and with a creak.
Traveling along the Golden Circle is an excellent choice for the independent tourist by car. The best option for a leisurely acquaintance with the treasures of Russian culture is 14 days. Usually Moscow is chosen as the starting point.
Now let's get to know the cities of the Golden Ring more closely. Let's describe a short route, the so-called suit for tourists.

Surprisingly calm, rich in churches and temples, Suzdal is interesting for tourists and believers at any time of the year. The walls of the Nativity Cathedral were erected in the 11th century and serve as the burial vault of princes. The complex of posad temples is located opposite the Suzdal Kremlin. Suzdal draws spiritual saturation in a great variety of churches: Pyatnitskaya, Kazan, Entry into Jerusalem, Resurrection, Lazarev. The history of each church is unique. During the trip, important stops are such legendary cities as Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Suzdal, Yaroslavl, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great and Sergiev Posad. The main reason why they were included in the list of cities in the Golden Ring of Russia is the presence of unique architectural, historical and cultural attractions that reveal the richness of Russian traditions.
The journey begins from Sergiev Posad - the legendary city, famous for the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, which was founded by St. Sergius of Radonezh about 700 years ago. Constantly developing, the city has turned from a small settlement into a center of the Orthodox faith and culture, where people from all over the country come to.
Numerous architectural structures were built here by the best architects in the 15th-19th centuries. The ensemble of the monastery includes more than 50 buildings, each of which has its own purpose. Especially stand out against the background of other snow-white Refectory and Metropolitan's chambers. You can admire this splendor by going up to the observation deck of the Pancake Mountain.
There are other interesting places outside the Lavra:
A lot of cognitive things can be discovered in the vicinity of the city, for example, here is the Gethsemane Chernigov Skete, which previously was not inferior to the Lavra in terms of the number of pilgrims.
