Cities of the Golden Ring of Russia: a short description of the full route

What you need to know before riding the Golden Circle

Arzamas, Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan are striving to enter the "Golden Ring". Serpukhov and Uglich have already been adopted. What does belonging to the "Golden Ring" give? Who are they waiting for? What do the authorities and ordinary travel enthusiasts think of this?

Hospitality Economics

In 1967, the journalist of "Soviet Culture" Yuri Bychkov traveled to eight cities (Vladimir, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov, Sergiev Posad, Suzdal, Yaroslavl) and wrote essays about them under the general heading " Gold ring of Russia". He started from Suzdal - the city where the zero kilometer of the unique route is believed to be located. The headquarters of the Union of Cities of the Golden Ring is located in Yaroslavl.

Today the route with this name has the status of the most popular and recognizable route in the country. In January, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, representatives of the Yaroslavl Region came up with an initiative to include Uglich in the Golden Ring. The proposal was approved. The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation decided to admit one more city per year to the project.

For example, Gorodets of the Nizhny Novgorod region will soon prepare an application. "We have now received a conclusion from the Russian Academy of Sciences on the date of the city's foundation," said Alexei Alekhin, director of the department for tourism development and folk arts and crafts in the region. According to the rules, the city must be founded before the 15th century inclusive.

Later, Nizhny Novgorod itself can submit an application - it is believed that at one time Gorky did not get into the project as a closed city full of secret industries.

And there is something to fight for. The Department of Tourism of the Yaroslavl Region announced an increase in tourist traffic by 45% in five months of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017. According to official data, 1.08 million people have visited the region. The authorities associate this interest with the emergence of the brand “Yaroslavia - Russian Gardarika” and the development of thematic routes (“Soviet excursion” to Rybinsk).

“Uglich's entry into the“ Golden Ring of Russia ”is very honorable. This is already the fourth city in our region, which is included in the national project, - said Yulia Rybakova, director of the tourism department of the Yaroslavl region. “It is especially important that Uglich is guided by the priorities of tourism development as a separate branch of the economy.”

And others will be pulled

Thanks to Vladimir and Suzdal, who have been part of the project for half a century, tourist opportunities are in demand and Alexandrov, Kirzhach, Pokrov, Yuryev-Polsky, Murom, Gorokhovets, told AiF in the tourism committee of the Vladimir region administration.

The Golden Ring is a popular tourist route in Central Russia.

It passes through eight cities: Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanov, Suzdal and Vladimir. Some also include Moscow, Gus-Khrustalny and Uglich on this list.

In the cities of the Golden Ring, tourists admire traditional Russian architecture, visit churches, monasteries and museums. Yaroslavl alone has 140 architectural monuments, and the city itself is included in the list of UNESCO heritage sites.

How the Golden Ring route was born

The Golden Ring, the popular and most famous brand of Russian tourism today, is nearly 50 years old. The route with this name was created in the late 1960s, primarily for foreign tourists coming to the USSR. It passed through the ancient Russian cities that made a significant contribution to the history of the country and its culture.

The very name "The Golden Ring" was first used by the artist and art critic Yuri Alexandrovich Bychkov. At the end of 1967, on the pages of the newspaper "Soviet Culture", he wrote a series of local history essays dedicated to the cities of Ancient Russia.

Collecting material for future texts Yu. Bychkov independently developed a circular route from Moscow through Vladimir to Suzdal, and then to Ivanovo and Kostroma with a return to the capital along the Yaroslavl road. All distances between cities could be easily covered in a day by car, which was very convenient. And the cities he chose were historically part of Vladimir Rus.

According to a large number of historians, ethnographers and art historians, the Golden Ring consists of eight cities: Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal and Vladimir. Most recently, Kasimov (2015) and Kaluga (2016) were also included in the top cities.

Zero kilometer of the Golden Ring of Russia in Yaroslavl

The Zero Kilometer sign is basically made of a cast-iron column from the first half of the 19th century, discovered during construction work in one of the buildings of the Yaroslavl merchants Vakhrameevs. On the column there are signs with the names of the cities of the Golden Ring and the distance in kilometers to them. The pedestal depicts bas-reliefs with images of the Golden Ring scheme, the Yaroslavl coat of arms, quotes from the song about Yaroslavl. One of the bas-reliefs is engraved with the text of the decree of Emperor Nicholas II, who in 1912 granted Yaroslavl a “non-partisan day” - May 24 [10].

Sergiev Posad

Historically important buildings of Russian culture were not even erected in the 18th century, but were built over the course of the 14th-17th centuries. That is, the Trinity Cathedral and the Lavra ensemble built around it are among the oldest historical structures in Russia.

It is also worth visiting such sights of Sergiev Posad as the Assumption Cathedral and the Dukhovsky Temple.

The city is located on the shores of the picturesque Pleshcheyevo Lake, around which the national park of the same name is located. The object of worship of the pagans has survived - a huge dark blue boulder weighing 12 tons. On the shores of the lake there are holy springs. On Lake Pleshcheyevo, Peter I begins the construction of a "amusing flotilla" that has become the cradle of the Russian navy.

We travel ourselves! traveltu. u

Hello friends! In 2017, the Golden Ring of Russia celebrated its 50th anniversary. For more than half a century we have been traveling through the most beautiful cities, admiring their architectural monuments and the beauty of nature. Many of you have probably visited at least some of them and you yourself can tell a lot of interesting historical facts. We are waiting for them in the comments. We will briefly tell you which cities are included in the Golden Ring of Russia and the tourist routes along it. About who came up with the first route and when the first trip took place. There are many worthy cities in Russia. You can travel along the Ring, or you can go to certain places - those where your heart draws you.

Which cities are included in the Ring

An interesting moment. At first, 8 ancient Russian cities were combined into a single route:

  • Vladimir (Vladimir region)
  • Suzdal (Vladimir region)
  • Ivanovo (Ivanovo region)
  • Kostroma (Kostroma region)
  • Rostov Veliky (Yaroslavl region)
  • Pereslavl-Zalessky (Yaroslavl region)
  • Yaroslavl (Yaroslavl region)
  • Zagorsk (Sergiev Posad) (Moscow region)

These cities are located on the same loopback route. For a long time this association was called the Golden Ring of Russia. Before Perestroika, it included Uglich (city 9).

Then the confusion began, and we still did not understand with which departments it was connected. Many worthy cities began to be called the city from the Golden Ring. The list has expanded. This is understandable - in Russia there are many more unique places and beautiful ancient cities that you must see.

Whether such a branded prefix appeared in the city officially or whether travel agencies themselves began to do it, we still did not understand. But over time, 4 more were added to the first eight:

  • Uglich;
  • Ples;
  • Yuryev-Polsky;
  • Alexandrov.

Of course, that's not all! 4 more cities have been added to the list:

  • Dmitrov;
  • Bogolyubovo;
  • Murom ;
  • Kideksha.

The "prefix" City of the Golden Ring helps the cities. Tourists, hotels, shops, souvenirs, excursions, restaurants - everything brings a pretty penny to the budget. The list was expanded for a reason. This is all - the territory of ancient Russia, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. The basis of the future state.

The Vladimir-Suzdal land is the cradle of Russian statehood and the custodian of numerous testimonies of the stormy spiritual, political, cultural and social life of the Russian people. The tourist route "The Golden Ring of Russia" acquaints tourists with the surviving evidence of its centuries-old history. The list of cities included in its composition is constantly updated.

What is the “Golden Ring of Russia”

The name “Golden Ring” cannot be found on a physical map of Russia. It marks the largest Russian network of routes for historical, cultural and religious tourism.

Title history

The term owes its appearance to the Soviet and Russian art critic and writer Yu. A. Belyaev. In the fall of 1967, in a private car, he traveled through several ancient cities located in the Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Moscow regions. The author published sketches about each of the visited cities in the newspaper "Soviet Culture", combining them into the series "Golden Ring"

A vivid, memorable name was attached to the tourist route, which by the beginning of the 90s. became the world famous brand “Golden Ring of Russia”.

The main condition for the inclusion of a city in the Golden Ring route is to comply with the following conditions:

  • a long history, confirmed by written and archaeological sources;
  • good preservation of historical architectural structures;
  • the presence of a developed folk craft, which has deep historical roots.

In the year of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the appearance of the Golden Ring tourist route, eight of its traditional cities created the Union of the Golden Ring Cities.

Its activities are aimed at developing the popularity of the national tourism project both domestically and globally. Within its framework, a common logo and corporate identity were developed, used in events held under the auspices of the union in the participating cities, and on souvenirs.
