History of the Pskov region

The first written mentions of the Pskov region (modern Pskov) date back to 903, and according to archaeological data, the current territory of the Pskov region was inhabited more than 2 thousand years ago - first by the Baltic and Finno-Ugric tribes, and then by the first Slavs, who appeared here around the 6th century. n. e.

From the 10th to the early 12th centuries. The Pskov region was a part of the Old Russian state, and later - a part of the Novgorod land. Officially, the separation of Pskov from Novgorod took place only in 1348 under the terms of the Bolotov Treaty - then Pskov became the capital of the Pskov Veche Republic.

In 1510 the Pskov Republic was liquidated and incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

In the 17th century. with the beginning of the period of turmoil and after it, the Pskov region was occupied by Sweden and Poland - so, according to the terms of the Deulinsky armistice of 1618, the Pskov cities of Sebezh and Nevel departed to the Commonwealth and were returned to Russia only in 1772

In 1944 the Pskov region was formed, the modern borders of which were formed only in 1958.

Weather in Pskov region

The climate of the Pskov region is warmer and softer than other regions of the north-west of the country. The average temperature in July is +16. +18 ° C, not uncommon and +30 ° C. But with all this, drizzling rain is a common phenomenon even in summer. At the end of August, early autumn comes to the Pskov region with cold weather and lingering rains, briefly interrupted in September-October by the warm and dry "Indian summer". In winter, snowfalls are frequent and not very cold: -6. -8 ° С, periodically thaws occur. Spring usually comes in early March.

From May to July, the sun sinks below the horizon at night for such a short time that the sunset smoothly turns into dawn. Almost like "white nights" in St. Petersburg.

Yulia Beloborodova, First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the Pskov Region for Culture, spoke about this.

Russia starts here

- Yulia Viktorovna, why is the Pskov region good for tourists?

- According to various ratings, for several years in a row our region has been among the ten most popular places for recreation and travel. In addition, we have 18 sites that are included in the preliminary list of UNESCO. The region attracts our and foreign tourists primarily by its rich cultural and historical heritage. The installation on the embankment of the Velikaya River, which says "Russia begins here", fully justifies itself. Russian statehood began here and many historical events are associated with Pskov. Again, we have a huge number of temples visited by pilgrims.

In addition, we have a developed tourist infrastructure. For example, thanks to the Pskovsky tourist cluster, the number of tourist facilities in the region has grown significantly. Now in the region there are about 350 cafes and restaurants, more than 110 accommodation places, which can accommodate more than 8 thousand people at a time.

- How many nonresident tourists come to the region every year?

- According to our preliminary estimates, about 380 thousand people stayed in our accommodation facilities last year. This New Year's holidays - 16 thousand tourists. This is 14% more than last year. Throughout the holiday weekend, the main hotels of the Pskov region were more or less busy, some of them had 100% occupancy.

Recently, we see that the portrait of a tourist has changed - groups have begun to come less often, more and more are individual tourists.

For example, the Izborsk Museum-Reserve these days was visited by 7 thousand people. The only thing we could take into account the flow of visitors only by the number of tickets purchased. But, of course, there were also those who simply walked through the territory of Izborsk and to the Slovenian Springs. Therefore, we assume that there were many more people. The same goes for Pskov and other cities. We take into account the flow of tourists by the number of booked rooms in hotels. But there are also many who find alternative housing options, for example, apartments.
