Working in Costa Rica

Adventure in Costa Rica

Rather, this article can be called: "Code of Conduct in Costa Rica." But I deliberately caught up with fear in the headline, because I, like you, would not at all want to go to the police or to the hospital.

Costa Rica is a unique country where there is no army of its own, and 25% of the territory is occupied by national parks. How not to leave your trousers in the paws of a monkey, where to swim and what to say in response to "thank you".

Swimming in volcanic craters

Costa Rica is also a land of volcanoes (today there are 150 of them). In their craters, inviting blue lagoons can often be seen. We do not recommend swimming in them: the water is icy, and besides, it may contain heavy metals. The shores and bottom of such a lagoon is a swampy swamp. In an attempt to get closer, the thick sticky mud will begin to suck in your feet so hard and quickly that you will have to call for help.

Wearing shoes casually

You never know who got there? In addition to scorpions, Costa Rica is home to many venomous snakes - for example, the pit viper. She is considered one of the most dangerous snakes in the world, her poison can kill a large cow in a minute. Shaking tarantulas out of boots is a routine procedure, especially for those who live near the forest. Before you shower, it is possible that you will first have to grab a broom and sweep the boa out of the booth - although harmless, it is still a snake.

Thinking monkeys are adorable cuties

Costa Rica is a land of monkeys. Here, the tailed relatives of man climb trees, shout loudly and drag food from the table. One of the most common are howlers. Not aggressive at all, but very well audible, especially at sunrise and sunset - then their greeting cry spreads in the air for hundreds of meters.

However, tourists are most touched by the Cariblanco - Capuchin monkeys. Nice face, long tail ... And how funny they know how to beg for food! This is where the ambush comes in: as soon as you get out of the car with a packet of cookies or a bunch of bananas, more than ten primates will surround you, start making noise, pulling hands and pants, showing their rather big fangs.

According to Costa Ricans, Capuchins can even be dangerous - especially for women, whom they are not at all afraid of. Only a man can scare them away. There is only one conclusion: do not get out of the car if you have food in your hand, and there is no man with a stick nearby.

Costa Rica is a small republic located in Central America. Many people know this state as one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Thanks to the unique nature and warm climate, thousands of tourists come to rest in this republic every year.

The Republic of Costa Rica is a state in Central America

And often foreigners, after a vacation in this country, think about the prospect of further employment in Costa Rica. But, unfortunately, it is quite difficult for foreigners to find work here.

The point is that for legal employment in this republic you need to obtain a work permit. And this document is issued only to residents of the country.

Only foreigners who have lived in Costa Rica for at least 6 months can obtain resident status in this state.

Job Search Methods

But there is another way of finding employment in Costa Rica. You can find a job in this republic in your home country through an intermediary agency, the so-called recruiting organizations. But it should be borne in mind that a foreigner will need to pay for finding a suitable vacancy. There is no flat rate of payment for services. Each recruiting agency sets its own conditions.

But most often, the cost of employment through an agency is calculated based on the estimated annual income of a foreigner. On average, such organizations require payment of 10% of income for their services. But for this fee, the agency, in turn, is looking for a job, organizes an interview with a potential employer, and some even help in obtaining a visa to enter Costa Rica.

Information for visitors to Costa Rica

Small but very beautiful and hospitable Costa Rica invariably attracts tourists. Many foreigners, having come to this country to spend their holidays, fall so in love with its beautiful nature and original atmosphere that they decide to stay in it. The policy of the authorities, which managed to create comfortable conditions for work or doing business, also contributes a lot to this trend. Immigration to Costa Rica is gaining popularity also thanks to the simple legalization procedure.

Pros and cons of immigration to Costa Rica

Of course, tourism and immigration should not be confused. What on vacation touches and delights with permanent residence can start to annoy. Conversely, what tourists do not notice can be very useful for people who have moved to this country. Therefore, before deciding on a serious step and changing your place of residence, you should analyze all the pros and cons that those who decide to link their future destiny with Costa Rica receive.

The indisputable advantages include:

  • Mild and comfortable climate. The geographical position gave the country a pleasant weather, not subject to sharp fluctuations. Throughout the year, the thermometer shows approximately 28 degrees Celsius. Residents do not have to endure the unbearable heat in summer and suffer from heavy rains and cold in winter.
  • High standard of living. The country's budget is regularly replenished with funds from the tourist season, which remains relevant all year round.
  • Stability. The state can boast of stability in economic development and political situation. Inflation is kept at a low level here.
  • Spanish. The state language is Spanish. Practice shows that migrants from different countries quite easily master it, after which they get the opportunity to communicate with residents of 30 countries of the world.
  • Criminal situation. Compared to other countries in Latin and Central America, the crime rate is quite low.
  • Investment security. A stable economy is a guarantor of safe and profitable investments in various areas of the economy, including real estate.
  • Mentality. Local residents are distinguished by their benevolence and openness. They do not tend to evaluate foreigners only in terms of income.
  • Visa-free travel. Migrants who have acquired the citizenship of the country are entitled to visa-free travel to the territories of more than 120 countries of the world, including the European Union.

But not only the positive aspects of life in this Central American country. There are some downsides to be aware of:

  • Low salaries. Despite the stable economy and low inflation, the level of wages in the country is much lower than in Europe. Foreigners are unlikely to be attracted to relocation in order to generate income from employment.
  • High value of real estate. EU and US citizens love to visit Costa Rica and willingly buy square meters there. This demand from foreigners makes the cost of housing remain at a fairly high level.
  • Poisonous fauna. The warm country is home to a wide variety of insect and reptile species, many of which are poisonous.
  • Small area. The size of the country is small enough, so migrants from Russia may feel embarrassed after the vast expanses of their homeland.
  • Criminal situation. The country's authorities keep the criminal situation under control, but vigilance must not be lost. On the streets of cities, you can face theft or robbery.
  • Remoteness. Costa Rica is located at a considerable distance from Russia, so you need to be prepared for rare trips to your homeland and infrequent visits of relatives and friends.
  • Obtaining citizenship. Despite the transparency of the legalization procedure, obtaining Costa Rican citizenship is still more difficult than some other countries in Latin or Central America.

How to get a residence permit in Costa Rica for Russians

To legally reside in Costa Rica, study or run your own business, you need to be legalized. The first stage of this procedure involves obtaining a temporary residence permit. The country's legislation allows it to be issued to the following categories of migrants:

  • Retirees. The country welcomes wealthy elderly people. Pensioners are allowed to rest, but not to work. Therefore, the main condition for legalization is confirmation of financial solvency. The law does not provide for any other restrictions. Pensioners need to live in the country for at least 4 months a year. When submitting documents, attention should be paid to certificates of subsidies from the home state, the presence of sufficient savings or a source of constant income of at least 30 thousand rubles per month, which corresponds to 450-500 US dollars.
  • Spouses of Costa Ricans. The most preferential immigration policy applies to foreigners who have married citizens of the country. It is enough for a spouse to live only one day for a year in the country after the conclusion of the union in order to submit a marriage certificate to the registration authority and issue a residence permit based on it. A foreigner can start working at any time without any restrictions. After 2 years of living together, he gets the right to apply for permanent status and citizenship. At the same time, children born in Costa Rica automatically become its citizens.
  • Rentier. Representatives of this category of foreigners can live or rest in the country, but are not allowed to work. They must be in it for at least 4 months a year for 3 years. Permanent status requires documented monthly income of $ 1,000 per adult family member and $ 500 per child. As confirmation, we accept rental agreements, contracts with the employer or bank statements with the corresponding balance on the account.

  • Investors. The guarantor of obtaining a residence permit under this program is the purchase of real estate worth at least 10 million rubles. In addition, this property cannot be used for personal residence. The authorities regard such a purchase as a contribution to the country's economy. Investors can invest in the development of any business sector. The amount of the contribution is also 10 million rubles. For legalization, an investor only needs to live in the country for 6 months a year. After 3 years, he receives the right to permanent residence, and after another 4 years he can become a citizen of Costa Rica.

    Climbing Chirripo

The main attraction of the Republic of Costa Rica is the Chirripo National Park and the mountain of the same name with a height of 3820 m.To get into the heart of the mountain range and get to the top, you have to go through several ecological zones: from fantastic ancient forests to into the infinity of green valleys and cloudy forests. And when you climb to the top of Chirripo, you will see an absolutely stunning sunrise over the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean at the same time.

Mountain trekking requires good physical fitness. In clear weather at the top of the mountain, the horizon covers not only the surrounding area, but also the entire continent from the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

The trail is picturesque and comfortable. The park itself represents five different ecosystems: low-lying tropical rainforests, tropical wet forests, lower mountain wet forests, mountain wet forests, and subalpine wetlands.

    Costa Rican Volcanoes

What truly delights in Costa Rica are the incredibly beautiful waterfalls and impressive volcanoes. Visiting at least one of the volcanoes must be included in the compulsory program, although they are all different and unlike each other, like the towns located at the foot of these volcanoes.

Poas (2700 m) is the closest volcano from the capital of San Jose, which will certainly be remembered for its azure lake in the former crater and a walk along the trail in the high-mountain jungle. To look at the crater, it is better to get up early, as the fog descends very quickly, and there is a risk of missing the beautiful sight.

Arenal (1657 m) - the most famous volcano in Costa Rica, quite young and active, Vesuvian type, neat conical shape. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations. In this area you can spend a few days and a lot to see. However, to see the volcano in all its glory is a great success, as it is hidden by clouds most of the time.

Irasu (3432 m) is the highest volcano in the country. Its name is translated from the language of local Indians as "thunder". On the way to the volcano, you can really drive through the cloud, after all, almost 3500 m. The volcano has several craters, one of which was a lake, with a changing color of water during the day. Unfortunately, now there is no reservoir left in the crater.

Most of the volcanoes in Costa Rica are part of the national parks of the same name, and it is difficult to say which of the volcanoes is more beautiful. Each of them is worth a visit, after which there will be a lot of impressions.
