The name of the city “Karlovy Vary”, why?

The name of the city is very informative: the city of Karlovy Vary was founded during the reign of the famous medieval monarch of Europe, the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV.

According to legend, it happened that Karl and his retinue drove into the local forests to hunt. It is important to note that the day was not the most successful, the hunters did not manage to get trophies. Only in the evening, on the way back to the Loket castle, an amazing Red Deer suddenly appeared in front of the knights. The hunters immediately rushed in pursuit, forgetting about any tiredness, and drove the deer to the top of the cliff. But the proud animal did not surrender to the mercy of its pursuers. The deer jumped off the cliff into the abyss. And when the knights went down to the foot of the rocks, they did not find a wounded deer, to the greatest surprise, but their attention was attracted by a spring gushing from the ground with hot water. The subjects explained to Karl that this is a healing spring, the name of which is "vary" due to the very high temperature. The king really liked the "vars" and the place itself. Therefore, he announced that he would establish a new city here, which he would call by its name. Karl announced the purpose of founding the city: to help in the treatment of sick people. Of course, Karl fulfilled his obligation and subsequently repeatedly visited his city and its healing “vars”.

The cliff also got its name: Deer Skok. Now a statue of the Red Deer is installed on this site, and this place is the most important attraction of the city and a favorite place for tourists. It is from here that a unique view of the city opens up.

Dawn of Karlovy Vary

It is important to note: Karlovy Vary gained worldwide fame only in the 18th century, during the heyday of the Baroque style. At the same time, the resort became the most popular among the elite of European society, primarily aristocrats from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany and Russia, Poland. Karlovy Vary has become not only a popular, but also a very fashionable resort. Many politicians and artists got their inspiration here. The number of visitors to the resort grew rapidly. Not long before the First World War, the resort welcomed over 70,000 tourists every year. It was at this time that a great many new hotels, restaurants, inns and colonnades were rebuilt, and of course residential buildings and even a theater. Therefore, it is these buildings that form the architectural appearance of Karlovy Vary.
