Holidays in Mexico: a detailed guide for beginners

Mexico Tourism

Bright and hot, noisy and colorful, ancient and mysterious - Mexico is so many-sided and unpredictable that any trip here turns into a great adventure. The country of cacti and chili peppers, combining centuries-old traditions of Indian civilizations and Spanish conquerors, gave the world mariachi music, guacamole sauce, tequila and the mystical teachings of Castaneda. Mexico is an incredible mix of cultures, lush tropical nature, paradise beaches, majestic pyramids and a variety of recreation options: from relaxation to the sound of the ocean waves to a complete reboot.

When is the best time to go

Almost all year round, the main thing is to choose the right coast and resort. In winter, it is most comfortable in Acapulco, in spring - in Cancun, in summer - in the resorts of the Riviera Maya or in the center of the country. From November to April in Mexico it is dry and not very hot: +26. + 30 ° С, and in May the temperature and humidity rise - the rainy season begins, which lasts until October.

The best month for rest is January, when it is not only warm, but also fun - at first, the inhabitants of the country noisily celebrate the New Year and the Day of the Holy Kings, and on the 20th the Tequila Festival is held. But in August and early September, Mexico is uncomfortable: heat and humidity are accompanied by showers and hurricanes.

Beach Vacation

Luxurious beaches with azure sea, white sand and slender palm trees are the most obvious reason to come to Mexico. The oldest resort in the country is the famous Acapulco, the peak of its popularity came in the middle of the 20th century. Now another Pacific beach successfully competes with it - Kakalutu in Huatulco. And most tourists choose Cancun with its clean coastline, clear Caribbean waters and noisy parties. The main disadvantage of Cancun is its narrow coastline, which was pretty spoiled by hurricanes. The main plus is the proximity of attractions: the ancient cities of the Maya and cenotes.

Another popular destination on the Caribbean coast is the Riviera Maya. The most famous resort is Playa del Carmen: here natural beauty is combined with impeccable service and sports entertainment, and on the shore there is everything for lovers of civilized recreation - clubs, bars and restaurants.

Almost all Mexican beaches are covered with fine white sand, and the special golden color of Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is given by corals and shells crushed by waves. The coast of Oaxaca with rocky capes and high waves attracts surfers, the coral reefs of Akumal - divers. The beaches of Tulum are rightfully considered the most picturesque, and the most secluded are located near Puerto Vallarta: you can get to Playa del Amor only through a huge hole in the vault of the cave, and to Yelapa beach - only by water.

Most beaches are free, but sometimes they ask you to pay 20-50 MXN to enter. Umbrellas and sun loungers are paid separately. Prices on the page are for December 2019

Excursion holidays

Primordial nature, monuments of ancient civilizations, colonial architecture and painting of the early 20th century - Mexico will not leave indifferent even the most sophisticated traveler. In Mexico City, you should visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts: watch an opera or ballet, attend an exhibition, or simply admire the luxurious interior. The Frida Kahlo Museum will tell you everything about the life and work of the most famous Mexican artist. From the roof of the Chapultepec Palace, a panorama of the modern metropolis opens, and the ancient history is kept by the ruins of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan.

Spanish bullfighting can be seen in the capital from November to April. Bullfights take place in the large arena "Plaza Mexico".

From Mexico City it is easy to get to the ancient Aztec settlement of Teotihuacan with its grandiose pyramids or the "silver city" of Taxco, where the layout and buildings of the colonial period have been preserved. Also noteworthy are the centers of the Mayan civilization - Chichen Itza, Palenque, Monte Alban: not only pyramids have survived here, but also temples, palaces, and residential buildings. Tulum has fortress walls and towers erected by the Mayans, and one of the temples displays examples of ancient art - sculptures and frescoes. From Tulum, you can get to the Sian Kaan nature reserve with tropical jungle, mangroves and Mayan temple ruins.

Holidays in Mexico: a detailed guide for beginners

Tourism in Mexico is one of the most developed sectors of the economy. Mexico is one of the most visited countries in the world. The attractiveness of Mexico for tourists is due to a combination of many factors: a unique culture, including cultural festivals, cities with architecture from the times of Spanish colonial rule, the ruins of ancient Mesoamerican cities, the presence of nature reserves and beach resorts in combination with a favorable climate [1]. The peak tourist season in the country is from December to mid-summer, with “spikes” during the week before Easter and spring break, when a lot of US students come to the beach resorts.

Most of the tourists visiting Mexico are US and Canadian citizens. Less represented are tourists from Europe, Asia and Latin America. Outbound tourism is also growing in the country - while Mexico's lower middle class prefer to spend their holidays in their own country, the wealthy prefer to travel abroad.

According to the 2011 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report. (TTCI), Mexico is the 43rd most attractive tourist destination in the world [2]. At the same time, in terms of the level of human development, Mexico ranks 13th, 10th in terms of natural resources and 19th in terms of cultural criteria [2]. The TTCI report also notes that the main disadvantages for the tourist attraction of Mexico are the level of development of transport infrastructure (79th in the world), the level of hygiene and medicine (64th), and safety (128th) [2 ].

The coast of Mexico is famous for its beaches, the most famous of which are located in the following places:

One of the most popular beach resorts in Mexico, Cancun, is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, especially popular with college students during their spring break. Not far from it are the islands of Isla Mujeres and Holbox. To the south of Cancun stretches a hundred-kilometer coastal strip of the Caribbean Sea - the Riviera Maya, on which the resort towns and ecological parks of Xareth and Xel-Ha are located. On the southern tip of the Riviera Maya is the city of Tulum, famous for the excavation of ancient Mayan cities.

In addition to the world famous cenotes, the Yucatan also has many underground river systems such as the Sak Aktun.

Acapulco is the most famous beach resort on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Acapulco is also known as a favorite spot for cliff divers.

Resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters

"Caucasian hospitality" is already a brand that does not need advertising. Caucasian Mineral Waters (KMV), namely the multinational cities and villages that are part of them, are no exception. The attitude towards vacationers was always at least respectful. But now the situation in sanatoriums and in general domestic tourism in the North Caucasus, even in comparison with the past, is beyond praise.
