Tula Regional Branch celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society

Fishing on the river Beautiful Sword of the Tula region

On the eve of the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society and the Day of the Geographer, Tula travel lovers made a raft down the Oka River. The water trip along the Chekalin - Przemysl route was organized by members of the Russian Geographical Society and the Federation of Sports Tourism of the Tula Region.

Reconstruction of the Likhvin fortress Photo by OASolotarev

The starting point of the rafting - the city of Chekalin, in the past Likhvin - is the smallest city in Russia and has only about nine hundred inhabitants. Quite recently, a new interesting object of visit was created here - the reconstruction of the wooden Likhvin fortress from the time of the Zasechnaya line. The fortress was built in a historical place, on Cathedral Hill, towering tens of meters above the Oka River. During the time of Ivan the Terrible, the fortification was part of the chain of so-called "Coastal towns" of the Great Zasechny Line. In addition to the fortress, the participants of the campaign visited the beautiful building of the city outpatient clinic, built at the beginning of the 20th century according to the project of the district doctor F. Lisitsin, who worked there for more than three decades.

People of all ages went on a hike dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society - from novice water tourists to gray-haired veterans of rafting on the most difficult rivers of the Soviet Union. At the same time, the “patriarch” of Tula sports tourism, Alexander Miller, and the chairman of the Tula regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Oleg Zolotarev, took this route for the first time - which means that “at home” you can always discover something new for yourself! For the first time, the youngest participants of the hike also visited these places - students of the Prishnenskaya school № 27 Radomir Makartsov and Yaroslav Makartsov. But the famous Tula water tourist Alexander Senichkin, the creator of a unique frame-inflatable boat for rafting on mountain rivers, walked this path for the second time. The first campaign was no less than 60 years ago!

At the end of the first day of the rafting, the group visited the Likhvinsky Pokrovsky Good Monastery. It was founded in the XIV century by the first appanage prince Odoevsky, Roman Semyonovich, and is one of the oldest monasteries in the Tula region. Currently, the architectural complex is under reconstruction, but its sky-golden domes are already clearly visible to those traveling on water. But the Holy Dormition Gremyachev Monastery, located in the village of Gremyachevo, Kaluga region, Tula tourists managed not only to inspect, but also to attend the service. After its completion, tourists were invited to a meal with the sisters of the monastery and pilgrims - the lunch was delicious! Gremyachevo is a picturesque place located on a hill on the right bank of the Oka. From the observation deck at a bird's-eye view, a wide panorama of the river floodplain opens up to the horizon - the beauty is such that it will take your breath away!

It should be noted that almost throughout the entire route along the banks of the Oka there are a lot of blackberries, which at this time of the year are already ripe and very tasty. Having traveled more than 30 kilometers, the Tula completed their hike on the right bank of the Oka opposite Przemysl.

However, the events dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society and the Day of the Geographer did not end there. Within the framework of the "Night of Geography" announced by the Russian Geographical Society on August 18, the asset of the regional branch of the Society visited Chekalin again.

Last year, the chairman of the Youth Club of the Tula regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Ivan Stolyarov, an employee of the State Archives of the Tula Region, discovered interesting information. It turns out that the first branch of the Geographical Society of the USSR in Tula was created on May 16, 1989, in Chekalin, on the initiative of a native of the city and the famous local historian Vladimir Vedenin. The idea arose to hold a meeting of the members of the Russian Geographical Society of several generations, which was realized in the "Night of Geography".

The meeting lasted more than three hours, it was possible to discuss many pressing issues. The Chairman of the Society's department Oleg Zolotarev spoke about the ongoing projects, the planned expeditions and invited those present to take an active part in the Society's activities. The head of the Youth Club, Ivan Stolyarov, informed about the activities of the "Stone Culture of the Tula Region" project, which was awarded a grant from the Russian Geographical Society, and the activities of the Youth Club. Participants of the first organization created in Chekalin - Meima Margarita Mikhailovna, Polyakova Tatyana Nikolaevna Arsenina, Lidia Konstantinovna also attended the meeting of representatives of the Society's branch with the local lore activists of the city.

The Beautiful Mecha is a very picturesque river flowing in the Tula and Lipetsk regions, the right tributary of the Don. Its green hilly shores are so beautiful that you involuntarily begin to look for hobbits' dugouts with your eyes :). This area is often called Russian Switzerland.

The beauty of the fields here is diluted with the appearance here and there of limestone rocky shores and huge boulders. In the place where there are most of such blocks, there is a local landmark - the Horse-Stone megalith, which, according to legend, is the frozen horse of a Russian hero.

But the most interesting place on the river is the Ishutinskoye settlement. A unique view opens from the height of a huge steep hill, on which, according to legend, an ancient Sarmatian fortress stood.

The low complexity of the river makes it ideal for those wishing to get acquainted with water tourism and just have a good time in a pleasant company, admiring the beauty of nature. A few rifts will not let you get bored and prepare those who wish to hike along more serious rivers.

Recommended equipment:

  • Sleeping bag + Foam/rug
  • In case of bad weather it is good to take a hat and warm socks for sleeping.
  • For the hike, you must have 2 sets of clothing: for the rafting and for the camp.

  • Shoes that get wet, ideally quick-drying.
  • Some people use neoprene boots, others prefer sports sandals.
  • In case of cold weather (or general frostiness of the feet) it would be good to buy neoprene socks (3mm).
  • Wind-moisture-proof pants (you can use thermal underwear) or shorts.
  • Moisture-windproof jacket, or windbreaker + raincoat (you can use thermal underwear).
  • For people experiencing discomfort with dry hands, neoprene gloves are recommended.
  • Sun hat (bandana, buff, cap)/sunglasses/sunscreen.

  • thermal underwear, comfortable pants, a pair of T-shirts, fleece jacket or warm sweatshirt, windbreaker, 2-3 pairs of socks, comfortable shoes.
  • Bathing accessories, bath towel.

  • Backpack (no frame, otherwise we won't be able to put it in the herm and will be wet). You can replace it with a sports bag over your shoulder, we don't have to walk far.
  • KLMN (mug-spoon-bowl-knife)
  • Head torch with a spare set of batteries
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Personal first aid kit (medicines that you personally need)
  • Camera
  • It is recommended to bring trash bags with you for additional protection of documents and other important personal belongings.

Daily program

Start of the hike (April)

30. 4 at 19:00 we meet at the Tsaritsyno metro station, get on a comfortable bus and go to the starting point of the route. We leave already after midnight, so we are ready to quickly set up camp, get to know each other over a light dinner and go to bed :)

The length of the route is short, suitable for people just starting their hiking adventures. The hike is traditional, lunch, dinner and breakfast are cooked on a fire, we spend the night in tents.

Daily program

We meet early in the morning at the Kursk railway station with pre-purchased tickets for the express train. We sit on a comfortable express train, which will take us directly to the center of Tula in a little more than two hours. There we gather near the memorial to the defenders of the city, take a general photo, eat a marching morning snack, meet with the whole group and begin our walking journey.

After that, we will walk without backpacks along the central streets of the hero-city of Tula and go to the city center - to one of its most beautiful places - the Tula Kremlin. We leave the backpacks to the instructor and go to inspect the Kremlin. We will have about two hours for a walk in the city center, we will see interesting places associated with the history and traditions of the city - the hero of Tula. After that, a comfortable minibus will be waiting for us, on which we will move to the beginning of the main walking part of the route.

Getting off the minibus, we will find ourselves under the canopy of forests. Let's cook dinner on the burners and eat it with gusto. You cannot burn fires here, conduct any activity, because these are protected forests that surround the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Reserve. The names are memorable: "Native Forest", "Mitrofanovskaya Landing", "Chepyzh", "Afonina Roshcha". They tell us about Leo Tolstoy's love for forests and the need to keep them clean and tidy.

Having overcome the protected forests and groves, we go out to the lake, where you can swim, and then walk around the lake. On the way we will meet springs with life-giving water, copses and forests, Yasnopol fields.

In the evening we will arrive at the parking lot on the shore of the lake and stop there for the night. A delicious dinner awaits us, gatherings with a fire and aromatic tea on the shore of the lake.

(11 km - with a backpack + 7 km without a backpack in Tula)

After we wake up, do some exercises, have breakfast, make a beautiful walk along the lake with backpacks to the estate.

There, on the territory of the guest house, we settle down for lunch, have lunch with pleasure and get ready to continue our journey. Then we leave our backpacks to the instructor and move lightly without backpacks for a walk through the pearl of the Tula region - the Yasnaya Polyana estate museum. Walking freely around the estate, we will not notice how quickly 2 hours will fly by.

After that we return from our walk, buy souvenirs and say goodbye to Yasnaya Polyana: we load into a comfortable minibus and move to the Tula railway station.
