Rowing technique on a catamaran

Maneuvering on a catamaran; task 1

Water tourism is a kind of active recreation, which is the intersection of medium-sized reservoirs with the use of floating craft. The most extreme are rafting on mountain rivers, which have a fast and powerful current. And here there is a need to worry about safety. As in any sport, the right choice of equipment is of great importance in water rafting. There are two main types of it: rafts and catamarans.

"Raft" in translation from English means "raft". It is nothing more than a large inflatable boat made of a very durable material that can withstand heavy loads and is resistant to damage.

The raft consists of multi-section balloons to which safety ropes are attached, an inflatable bottom and spacer cushions that act as seats at the same time. The rafts are designed for six or ten people. In some rafts, the bottom is attached to the hull by lacing, which allows the water that has got into the hull to drain out on its own.

The height and size of the balloons make the inflatable raft floatable and prevent it from sinking. Thanks to this, the raft easily passes river rapids and obstacles.

The differences between rafts are primarily in the size (length, width and diameter of the cylinders) and the number of possible passengers (6 or 12), as well as in a number of technical characteristics (for example, the presence of additional reinforcements) associated with features of operation.

Therefore, it is great for river rafting and expeditions.

Among the shortcomings, there is a large windage of the raft and a relatively low speed.

These are capacious floating craft, consisting of two inflatable balloons. Their body is made of dense PVC coated fabric, and the inflatable chambers inside are made of gas-containing materials. The cylinders are attached to each other by a metal frame, on top of which a deck made of PVC material is installed. Passengers of the catamaran sit on cylinders facing forward. There must be the same number of rowers on each side. In our country, catamarans are very common.

  • Sport catamarans are used for competition. Their main characteristics are agility and speed. Suitable for rough streams and calm waters. This versatility makes them very popular among tourists as well. If necessary, some types of vessels can be equipped with a sail and a motor.

  • Camping boats are intended for tourist rafting and are selected taking into account the complexity of the upcoming route. They are easy to transport, stable and safe on the water, and easy to assemble and repair.

  • Plyos boats are not suitable for passing river rapids, they do not tolerate wind, which makes it difficult to move over large areas without a current. In this regard, a motor or a small sail is installed on them.

There is no universal flotation device suitable for any movement. Therefore, water tourists independently complete the existing structures in accordance with their needs.

The most popular means of transportation for water travel. Many people are used to thinking that a catamaran is a small boat with pedals, designed for recreation and spending time on the water with a group of friends. Of course, there are such devices. But the catamaran for water rafting is arranged a little differently. These are two large air-filled cylinders attached to each other by means of a rigid frame. Inside, the balloon is divided into separate sectors. In case of damage to one sector, only it is blown off, while the others remain intact and the catamaran is kept afloat. The frame consists of aluminum tubes that are connected to one another. Additionally, they are covered with fabric or mesh, which makes it possible to use the frame for transporting passengers or luggage. Even if the catamaran is overturned, it is very easy to put it on the water in its previous position.

VodaBereg talks about different techniques for rowing on a catamaran.

Before starting the swim, you need to learn the basics of catamaran control techniques. However, it is not that difficult. And having figured out how to row on a catamaran correctly, you can start applying theoretical knowledge in practice.

Catamaran is a ship consisting of two hulls connected by a bridge. Sports rafting on a catamaran is now gaining more and more popularity. This vessel is ideal for tourism and outdoor activities, has a number of positive qualities: structural reliability, stability, high maneuverability, speed, good controllability.

Catamaran is a combination of safety and drive. The vessel is well suited both for descending on calm rivers and for extreme rafting with overcoming a large number of difficult obstacles.

Catamaran steering technique includes various methods of paddling. Let's take a closer look at them.

Stroke Classification

There are movement strokes and control strokes. What it is? Traveling paddles are used to provide acceleration along the axis of the boat. The control paddles rotate the catamaran around its center of gravity.

Each stroke is done in four steps:

1. The start of the stroke. The paddle blade enters the water. 2. Wiring. The blade pushes off the water, giving the catamaran acceleration. 3. The end of the stroke. The blade comes out of the water. 4. Unsupported phase. The paddle is lifted to begin the next stroke.

Catamaran steering techniques are various options and combinations of strokes. Let's consider some of them.

Do you know how to fly a catamaran? Solve a simple problem

  • You are rafting down the river. The direction of the flow on the sheet is from bottom to top (so that there are fewer problems with describing right and left)
  • It is necessary to describe in as much detail as possible the actions taken in order to pass through the first ridge on the left side of the stream and pass the second ridge with right side.
  • At the same time, having made as few extra strokes as possible and not getting up on the stones of the second ridge.
  • Take the average speed of the current for about 7 km/h. Between the ridges, the flow naturally slows down a little, and between the stones in the ridges it accelerates a little in the sinks.

Historical background

The task is based on one of the sections of the river. Aksaut, where lessons on catamarans control were held as part of a training trip of one of the Perovsk tourist schools.

The school was at a specialized level, and the participants had experience of hiking 2, 3 or more k. There was a pebble beach next to the area indicated in the task, along which it was convenient to bring ships up. There were convenient places for the chalka in front of and after the site.

The hike to the initial stone gate and the subsequent chalka are not included in this task, and were not particularly difficult for the participants. But with the implementation of this task itself, there were difficulties.

After the assignment was received, everyone said it was easy, and took turns starting to complete it. Everyone got into the first stone gates without any problems, but with further maneuvering difficulties arose.
