Don river on the territory of Russia

Sports tourism: crossing the Don River on a rowing boat

The Don River is one of the interesting water streams in the southeastern part of the Russian Federation. It has an impressive size, and its length is quite large. The river originates in a broad-leaved forest belt and reaches the steppe plains with arid climatic conditions.

Don got its name from the Aryan word "Danu", which means river in Russian. In Russia, the Cossacks constantly praised him in their chants, calling him Don-Batyushka, which testifies to the enormous economic value of the river.

Below, we find out: in which cities the Don River flows and where it flows.

Where is the source of the Don River

The beginning is considered to be a tiny stream of Urvanka, flowing out of the ground in the Tula region on the Central Russian Upland. On the geographical map, the source of the Don River is indicated a little north of the city of Novomoskovsk.

It is on this plot of land that the natural-historical ensemble “The Source of the Don” was erected, which marks the beginning of the river, where it turns from a tiny stream, going along its bed, into a strong river stream.

The rivers flow into the Don, which flow along the Central Russian Upland and the Oka-Don Lowland. The total number of rivers of various lengths and widths feeding it is 5200. Their length is more than 60 thousand km. They form a huge catchment area of about 420 thousand square meters. km. Despite this, the Don receives some water from tributaries, as its catchment area is mainly located in arid zones.

The largest tributaries of the Don River are: from the right bank - Seversky Donets, and from the left - Khoper and Medveditsa.

Right-side tributaries have narrow and deep reliefs. An outcrop of rocks is observed along the coastline, in some places karst relief is significantly expressed, there are many forest zones and very few lakes.

Left-sided river tributaries, on the contrary, are meandering, with a wide relief. There are many lakes in the floodplain of their valleys. Along the coastline, basically, there is a forest belt, which in certain places occupies vast areas (for example, Usmansky or Khrenovsky bor).

Journey across the Don

The river is one of the favorite objects of tourist routes for rafting. Interesting and famous historical monuments are located on its banks, and there are also convenient access roads to the beginning of the routes. There are many dams in the upper reaches of the river, but there are practically no barriers below the city of Voronezh.

Tourist routes have different lengths and can start from the city of Epifan, where the river valley narrows to 0.5 km. The coastline on the right is high and steep, and on the left, on the contrary, sloping. The width of the Don in the upper reaches ranges from 50 to 70 meters; rifts are observed downstream.

Don is one of the most picturesque rivers in Russia. It is the second most important and the third longest in the country. Some researchers estimate its age at 23 million years. Even the ancient Greeks, describing the Tang (as they called the Don), considered it a watershed between Europe and Asia. It was on the banks of the Tana (the mouth of the Don on the territory of the Rostov region) that the ancient Greek settlement Tanais was created, which to this day remains a place of attraction for archaeologists from all over the world.

The Don River is not only the natural, but also the cultural heritage of the country. The Don witnessed many historical events - from the battles on the Kulikovo field and the campaigns of Stepan Razin to the construction of the Volga-Don Canal and one of the largest artificial reservoirs in Russia - Tsimlyanskiy.

Don fish and crayfish are the pride of local residents and a welcome delicacy for many connoisseurs of varied Russian cuisine.

The significance of the Don River as part of the cultural heritage of the Cossacks, whose traditions are still alive today, stands apart.

Don's length and width

The Don River is 1,870 kilometers long. It is the fifth longest river in Europe. The area of the Don basin exceeds 440 thousand square kilometers.

Rostovites made a risky trip along the Don River on oars from Tsimla to Rostov-on-Don

Rostovites made a risky crossing along the Don River on a rowboat.

In the summer of 2020, a boat trip finished on the Rostov embankment, the route of which ran from the dam of the Tsimlyansk reservoir to Rostov-on-Don. Rostovites Yuri Degtyarev and Igor Sitnikov paddled a distance of 370 kilometers in six days.

The residents of Rostov, who are keen on rowing, have planned their journey for a long time. Yuri Mikhailovich Degtyarev is the head of the Cossack teenage club in the village of Gnilovskaya, a famous craftsman for the manufacture of small ships. He made a boat for the water passage with his own hands, using as a model the well-known project of engineer Dmitry Kurbatov: a two-seater "coach's boat" designed to accompany kayak races.

It is light, nimble, roomy enough and holds the wave very well, which is very important when sailing on a large river (after all, Father Don, although considered quiet, can be very tricky!).

Igor Anatolyevich Sitnikov, a journalist and writer, an employee of the regional specialized library for the blind, became his companion.

Rowing along the Don

Igor published the newspaper of the Rostov-on-Don Maritime Assembly, he is also known for his literary projects: he wrote books about the Rostov port, about the zoo, organized the publication of the collection of poets "Zaozernaya School", and now together with the Don historian Valery Garlic is preparing the publication "The Cradle of Rostov", which will contain essays about the river that gave the name to our city.

By the way, Igor Sitnikov plans to use the materials collected during this trip in the book. And he adapts the written essay for reading by blind people.

The water crossing was dedicated to the 270th anniversary of the Rostov port. In organizing this trip, the chairman of the Council of the Association "Water Transport of the Don" A. Ogarev, the pilot company "Tornado" (leaders I. Bulakh and A. Babkin), as well as the Rostov-on-Don maritime assembly.

The water journey began on land. The boat was tied to the roof rack of a car and taken to the dam of the Tsimlyansk storage facility - to the place where the Volga water is discharged into the Don. But in the morning, as soon as the sun dawned, the boat departed from the coast and went downstream of the Don.
