The Katun is the main river of Gorny Altai, one of the sources of the Ob. Long, with a huge flow of water and many rafting tributaries. The Katun 'originates on the southern slopes of Belukha and its basin covers most of the Altai Mountains.
In the upper reaches, the Katun is transparent and has an unforgettable turquoise hue. On the section to the village of Tungur, there are no difficult obstacles, the river flows briskly among the mountain ranges, forming rifts and swift currents at bends.
Koksa is a left tributary of the Katun. This is a calm river with a slight slope and simple rapids, an excellent option for a relaxing water holiday and beginners.
Rafting takes place on two-seater inflatable kayaks - Vega, Khatanga or Waterfly. Participants go on them independently under the guidance of instructors who show the correct and safe path and carry out belay at the rapids. At the beginning of the trek, the instructors teach the team the necessary skills, which are improved during the rafting. At least 2 instructors accompany the group.
Group size from 5 to 15 participants. The group is accompanied by at least 2 instructors. We live in 3-4 local tents (provided by the club), we cook food ourselves on a fire or a burner under the guidance of instructors.
We meet at the airport of Gorno-Altaysk. We load into minibuses and hit the road. The journey will take about 5 hours. Transfer to Altai is a separate trip. We will see landscapes changing from valley to valley and understand what "Siberian" distances are. Part of the way goes along the Chuisky tract. From the bus window we will see almost the entire Nizhnyaya Katun, stretch our legs at the Seminsky pass. After leaving the Chuisky tract, we will find ourselves in a high-mountainous steppe. The ridges here seem to grow out of the sea of green grasses. In the evening we will reach the banks of the river. Cox and set up camp.
Today is the first day of the rafting. Let's get to know each other better and have a chat at breakfast. Before the start, the instructors will tell you about safety on land and on the water, teach you how to operate a kayak and answer any questions. The river on the first day is completely calm, although not by Karelian standards - we are in the mountains and the river is constantly flowing down. The Koksa channel is constantly bending, undermining the banks and forming blockages - you will not be bored.
Exploration of the dynamic Peschanaya river, 3rd category of complexity. A unique opportunity to participate in the exploration of a new route, to be in the very first group of the Adventure Club! The rafting takes place not far from Gorno-Altaysk (transfer about 3 hours). A river with a good height difference (560 meters by 210 kilometers, this is a slope of 2.7 meters per kilometer, even more than on the Katun!), With a large number (more than 30) technically interesting obstacles.
Rafting takes place on six-seater catamarans Belraft and Raftmaster, each catamaran will have an experienced instructor who, during the rafting process, will tell and explain how to read the water correctly, make decisions and take the right strokes exactly when it is necessary, and don't just paddle the water. Also in the group there is a four-seater sports catamaran (Sterkh) and a 2-seater catamaran on which you can go this route, if the instructor considers your skills sufficient for this.
For this rafting it is not necessary to have experience of water routes, it is just designed for training. Those who already have experience in rafting will also be able to improve their skills and prepare for more serious rivers.
The en-route training program is structured from simple to complex. We will learn the basics of catamaran rowing, read the water, outline the tactics for passing water obstacles, and put up insurance. Of course, this is all optional, whoever wants to simply ride on the river without going into details can do it. In the evenings we will sit by the fire, tell hiking stories, sing with a guitar and have a delicious meal. And on the day we'll put together a real camping sauna!
The senior instructor will meet you in the city of Gorno-Altaysk (the exact time of the meeting and the local phone number of the instructor will be communicated to you by the coordinator of the hike, he will also answer your application for participation in the hike).
After that we will go to our garage, repack our belongings into 80 liter hermetic bags (urban civilian clothes and suitcases can be left in the garage, we will return here after the end of the rafting). We will stop for lunch at the canteen and go to the starting point of our route (the village of Ilyinka). Travel time is about 3 hours, we will go by minibus, most of the rafting equipment will travel in a trailer.
All participants must have personal belongings with them according to the equipment list. Trekking weather can be very changeable. Illiterate equipment can turn a trip into a struggle for survival in difficult conditions and badly affect your health! Therefore, we again recommend that you carefully read our recommendations for equipment, and if something is not clear, you can check with the coordinator or instructors of this trip.
The water in the Peschanaya River in July is approximately 17-20 degrees. The air temperature during the day can reach 30, and at night drop to 10.
In some places (closer to villages), the route may catch the phone and the Internet.
There are not many mosquitoes, the tick season is also ending, but if you want not to worry about this at all, you can get vaccinated in advance. And also, when in the forest, it is best to always follow simple precautions to protect yourself from ticks.
Here are these simple recommendations: In the forest, and especially deciduous bushes, walk only in slippery synthetic clothing (not fleece, not cotton). It is difficult for ticks to catch on such clothes. Tuck the pants into boots or socks so that the pincers cannot crawl underneath. Ticks are always low enough from the ground, on grass and bushes, they cannot jump from a tree to their heads, so if you eliminate the possibility of hitting from the ground, they will not get to you.
Water rafting is one of the most popular types of recreation in Altai. The most popular river for rafting is the Katun River. If boating is new to you, then check out our beginner's guide. And in this article we will talk about more complex routes. Their passage takes more than one day, requires more serious physical training and financial costs. But this is a real extreme adventure.
We asked Vitaly Zhutov, director of the Akkem-Tour company, which professionally organizes rafting on Altai rivers, to our questions.
Vitaly, which section of the Katun will be of interest to advanced water tourists?
There are three main sections on the Katun - the upper, middle and lower Katun. The longest and most difficult is the variant with the upper Katun. The hike usually lasts seven days. Of these, six days of active rafting. The route goes to the village of Tungur and to Chemal. This tour is called Upper Katun Rafting. We are recruiting groups along this route.
Are there any requirements for members of these groups?
It is highly desirable to have an experience of at least the simplest hikes along the lower Katun. You need good physical fitness and there is an age restriction. We take participants from 18 years old to this tour.
How is the transfer to Tungur carried out?
We meet tourists in Barnaul, Biysk or Gorno-Altaysk at the airport, at the railway station, or pick up people from the hotel if they arrived in advance and settled there. After the rafting, we return the people back from where they were taken.
The cost of such an alloy is from 20,000 rubles per person. This is the full price including transfer, meals, equipment and accident insurance.
Suppose if a tourist calls you today, can you organize a rafting tomorrow?
No, we have certain dates, we form applications for them. People come from Moscow, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk. We collect them in one group, and they go on tour.
What are you rafting on?
These are mainly rafts that are insured by a catamaran or kayak. At least two floating crafts go to complex rafts, if one ship turns over, the second insures it. Experienced instructors are always available on the kayak or catamaran.

Route book No. 1/4 –416

This trip was conceived as a tourist sporting event designed to fulfill the following requirements:
This region is no longer new for us - many of the team members were here in 2014, 2016, 2017. After last year's Sayan adventures (Zhombolok and Khara-Murin), we again decided to return to Altai.
In order not to repeat the route, this time we decided not to chase categories and exclude the Chuya we are used to from the bunch of rivers, and instead add the pedestrian-mountain part, i.e. none of the team has ever been to very popular places among tourists - the vicinity of the Katunsky ridge, Kucherlinsky and Akkemsky lakes. Proceeding from this, the most logical was the combined route, where the first part was on foot, implementing a circular trekking along Kucherla with a transition through the Kara-Turek pass to the valley of the river. Akkem and return to the village of Tungur, from where the second part of the route began along the main waterway of Altai - the Katun River.
