The Ultimate Backpacking Cyprus Tourism Guide

Rural tourism to Cyprus

Life and art

On the eve of the weekend, a good idea comes up - why not make a trip to the mountain village of Cyprus Lefkara?

I have known for a long time that acquaintance with Cyprus would not be complete without visiting this place. And not at all because Lefkara is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and not because it is a center for hand embroidery and silversmiths.

Of course, this is all interesting, but the main thing is that once you get here, you can see how the life and life of the inhabitants of the island evolved from time immemorial. Walking along the streets of the village, it is easy to travel back in time to catch the unique atmosphere that awakens interest in creativity. It's great to come here for a change of scenery!

Finding Lefkara is not difficult. We are going from Limassol towards Larnaca. After driving about 30 km, near the supermarket "Alfamega" we leave the highway and go to the mountains for about 11 km, guided by the road signs.

This sight is mesmerizing! On the right in front of us, as in the palm of our hand, is the mountain village of Lefkara with stone houses and red tiled roofs.

Following the signs, we go down to the center of the village, bypassing its administrative part - a small supermarket, a fire station, a couple of banks, the municipality. There are no problems with parking: a lot of free spaces, clear signs. Here you can feel genuine concern for the guests.

History and architecture

They say that the history of Lefkara begins in the XII century. Translated from Greek Lefkara means "White Mountains". The village received this name thanks to the limestone and silicon rocks of this area, which are used in the decoration of houses.

The rich burgundy, green and blue colors of wooden shutters and doors with wrought-iron hinges and old locks are in perfect harmony with the sunny color of natural stone.

Geography of Northern Cyprus.

There is no doubt that everyone dreams of visiting Cyprus at least once in their life and seeing with their own eyes the gifts of this unique island. Many are interested in the geography of Northern Cyprus. The uniqueness of the island of Cyprus is in everything - in its geographical location, history, climate, beautiful beaches, legends and historical monuments. Residents of many countries of the world have made Cyprus their favorite vacation spot. This is understandable: the combination of affordable prices, ideal climatic conditions, natural resources and, of course, the sea and the sun's rays make your stay in Cyprus unique and unforgettable.

The geography of North Cyprus includes: geographic location, weather characteristics, agriculture, population and language.

Geographically, the island belongs to Asia, occupies an area of 9,251 square meters. (the territory of Northern Cyprus is 3355 sq.). Located in the northeast of the Mediterranean Sea, it is the third largest island in the region. 57.6% of the entire territory belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, 36% - to Northern Cyprus or the TRNC. 3.% occupies a buffer zone under UN control and 2.% of the territory belongs to Great Britain, where military bases are located.

Despite its small area, only 100 km from north to south and 240 km from east to west, the natural gifts of Cyprus are surprisingly diverse. There are mountain ranges, rocky shores, kilometer long sandy beaches. Plains and natural ravines seem to have been painted by a romantic artist trying to reproduce paradise on his canvas.

The history of Cyprus is steeped in legends and myths and represents the history of the conquests and possession of the island by powerful civilizations. For lovers of history, the island will become an inexhaustible source of new knowledge about ancient cultures and world traditions. The British heritage is felt in Cyprus and in the present, but not only. Left-hand traffic and British-style electrical outlets are reminiscent of colony times. The British represent one of the many nations living peacefully in Cyprus.

Guaranteed sun for 300 days a year, clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, friendly Cypriots and loyal laws of Cyprus make it possible for tourists from many countries of the world to spend an unforgettable vacation here. And for those who decided not to part with the island for a long time - the opportunity to purchase real estate in Cyprus.

The choice of the island of Cyprus by tourists as one of their favorite vacation spots is not accidental, and is based primarily on its excellent climatic conditions, which are determined by the location of the island in the Eastern Mediterranean and the tropical Mediterranean climate. It is these factors that enable tourists to enjoy the unique climatic and weather conditions of Cyprus at any time of the year. But, even taking into account its geography, Cyprus has been noted in all works on the study of the climate on the planet "as unique for its location."

Long dry summers and short winters allow holidaymakers to enjoy 9 sunny months of the year. The beach season lasts from May to October. The average annual temperature is 19 degrees and the water temperature is 21 degrees. At the height of summer, in late July and early August, the air temperature can reach 40 degrees. It is these weather conditions that allow rare species of sea turtles to lay their eggs on the sandy shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Residents and tourists of the island have repeatedly witnessed the spectacular excavation of baby turtles. And it is on summer days that you can endlessly admire the calm azure sea extending beyond the horizon, and the blue sky without a single cloud, and not worry that the weather may deteriorate.

A truly velvet season is autumn in Cyprus. Despite the fact that the main flow of tourists visit Cyprus during the summer months, it is the September and October days that offer exceptional weather conditions. This is the time of year when the heat subsides, and the air temperature does not rise above 25-27 degrees, and the sea caresses with the waters warmed up over the summer. This is the time when Cyprus offers the vibrant colors of nature.

Tourists who visited Northern Cyprus in the fall call their vacation just a fairy tale. The decline in the tourist flow begins in November, in accordance with a decrease in temperature to 20 degrees. The first rains are possible at this time of the year. The winter months are characterized by a decrease in temperature to 15 degrees during the day and to 5 at night. In winter, in the Kyrenia mountains, short-term precipitation in the form of snow is possible, and on the coast - rains. January and February are the coldest months of the year. However, at this time of the year, Cyprus turns green. A variety of flowers bloom in the mountains and foothills, many of which only grow in Cyprus.

The territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is divided into 5 administrative regions: Guzelyurt (Morphu), Girne (Kyrenia), Iskele (Trikomo), Gazimagusa (Famagusta), Levkosha (Nicosia). Studying the geography of Northern Cyprus, we see that in the recent past, Northern Cyprus was an exclusively agricultural country, when production from agriculture was the basis of the economy. The climate and natural conditions are great for this. However, at present the situation has changed and the spheres of education and tourism have come to the forefront of the economy. There is no doubt that the most fertile lands of Cyprus are concentrated in its northern part. First, the Mesaoria Valley is the main area for planting and cultivating grain crops. Secondly, the Karpaz Peninsula has always been considered the best place in Cyprus to grow tobacco. Thirdly, the districts of Kyrenia and Guzelyurt are the center for the cultivation of citrus trees.

Geography of Northern Cyprus: rural employment. In total, there are approximately 195 villages and small settlements in North Cyprus. The rural population continues to be engaged in the production of various crops. Such as wheat, citrus, olive and carob trees, melons, grapes, figs, potatoes, etc. Mandarins, limes, oranges and grapefruits are the main production of citrus plants. Three types of orange fruits are popular in North Cyprus: Jaffa, Valencia and Washington. On certain days of the week, bazaars are held in each city where you can buy fresh vegetables and fruits delivered from all over the northern part of the island.

Cyprus offers tourists a fascinating travel experience - as well as medieval villages with picturesque narrow streets truncated by modern architecture, there are unique cultural spots, fantastic food and beautiful scenery to discover, not to mention beach opportunities abound. Here's your final guide needed.

Backpack scene

Tourists are spoiled by the climate of the island. Cyprus boasts excellent weather all year round - when the rest of Europe freezes over, the Mediterranean climate here promises sunshine even in winter.

Like the great weather, there is the island's beautiful natural environment, dotted with historic sites and monuments to visit. For some tourists, the idea of a community physically separated by the infamous Green Line captivates them. Each side of the island - just a few meters apart - has a unique cultural heritage, which is a great opportunity for visitors to experience the cultures of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

What's there for water lovers? Cyprus boasts over 50 Blue Flag beaches, marking the island's clean and safe coastlines for your enjoyment. You can dive into the water - literally - without fear. The Cyprus backpack also provides an opportunity to learn more about the island's politics - a compelling example is the Greek and Turkish Cypriots who once coexisted harmoniously before the 1976 war.

Maximum use

Learn local common phrases

Using the local language in a foreign country can reap dividends. Be sure to learn a few Greek or Turkish words or phrases before going, depending on which side of the island you are on - not only are you flexing gray matter while learning a new language, you will surely experience a warm welcome from the locals for your willingness to taste the local jargon. This does not mean that you will have problems if you only speak English - most people in Cyprus understand basic English and even more. As a British colony, many people speak this language, but value the preservation of their mother tongue.

Celebration Land

Tickets, resorts, beaches, attractions, prices, cuisine and much more - you've definitely never read such a useful article about Cyprus.

To Cyprus as a summer cottage! - this is the motto I have lived for the last year. It was invented by my friends, since Cyprus is the place where I go about once every three months. And yet, in my opinion, there is no country dearer and more sincere than Cyprus: you really come there as if you were home.

I’ll probably get that number, but I’ll list just a few of them:

  • Cyprus is perfect for a vacation at any time of the year. In summer, of course, heat and warm sea await you, in the off-season - a pleasant temperature of + 20-25C. And in winter it is rarely less than + 18C.
  • Cyprus is the place to go just for a weekend or a long vacation. You can have time to relax in two days, but at the same time, even several weeks will not be boring.
  • Cyprus has beaches, comfortable embankments, archaeological antiquities, streets of old cities, mountain paths and streams, authentic villages - it's very easy to find something to do! Cyprus has everything, but its own, small and distinctive.
  • Holidays in Cyprus are suitable for anyone - young people will hang out, families with children will appreciate zoos, parks and gentle beaches, pensioners will enjoy long promenades along the sea.
  • The locals of Cyprus are another story. Tourists are loved here, especially Russians. Everywhere you will be treated like the dearest guest. Legends can be made about the hospitality of the Cypriots: you will definitely be poured wine, even if you did not ask, and they will not take money for it, the tavern owner will sing you a song at dinner, and the waiter will go around all the neighboring establishments in search of a blanket so that you do not freeze at sunset. The Cypriot feast is very similar to ours, the Russian one - with toasts, a lot of food, songs, dances and local vodka Zivania. Even though the owner of the tavern and you speak different languages, you manage to laugh, understand jokes and slap each other on the shoulder in a friendly way.

Everything is simple here. Decide what is more important for you in your vacation:

Behind the beaches - the resorts of Protaras and Ayia Napa in the southeast of the island are ideal for a "belly-up" holiday, where you will find sandy beaches with a gentle entrance to the sea. But this does not mean that in other cities you will not be able to swim. It's just that in Larnaca and Limassol, grayish sand mixed with small pebbles, and in Paphos, there are larger pebbles on the beaches.

For parties - you are definitely in Ayia Napa - the most party and youth resort.

For walks and excursions - choose between Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. In these cities, there are magnificent promenades several kilometers long - walk, do not walk! You can also wander through pretty streets and look into castles and churches.

For peace and quiet - the most measured rest will be provided to you in Protaras.

Closer to Europeans - Paphos is considered the most European resort, and Limassol is the most Russian.

There are no problems with hotels in Cyprus, and an option can be found for any wallet - from 2-3 thousand rubles for a budget double room. There are also high-class hotels on the island - for example, the five-star St Raphael Resort, which is located near Limassol. On both sides of this resort are two blue flag beaches - Pareklisia Beach and Panagies Beach.
