Agritourism in Italy: a holiday with the flavor of the village

Is it easy in Italy to work on your own farm

Baths of Saturnia

According to legend, the terms of Saturnia originated in the place where Jupiter, angry with Saturn, threw a spear at him and. missed. Essentially, the waters of Saturnia are of volcanic origin. It is reliably known that the lands of Saturnia were inhabited by the Etruscans, who widely used the waters of the springs for medicinal purposes.

Saturnia is the most famous resort center in Tuscany. It is located 170 kilometers from Rome (2 hours by car), near Manciano, in the Maremma hills. This balneotherapy resort is one of the few in Italy in which bathing in the springs is completely free: the locals are politically attached to the idea of free use and have repeatedly rebuffed the encroachments of the authorities and private companies. Of course, first-class paid SPA centers are located in Saturnia, since there are many thermal springs in this area, but the main source near the old mill is open to everyone in any season for free.

The mild climate of Tuscany, the lack of nearby industrial production, oak and coniferous forests, all this perfectly complements the golden fund of Saturnia - mineral springs.

Mineral springs

Baths of Saturnia are hot springs with a temperature of 37.5 °: this is an ideal temperature norm, such water does not need to be cooled or heated, a person feels comfortable in it, and the relaxing effect of water is felt instantly. The composition of hydrogen sulfide sources with carbon dioxide also includes bioglea - algae growing at the bottom of reservoirs, and mineral salts. The power of the sources is amazing - more than 800 liters per second.

Indications: skin diseases (neurodermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, allergic dermatitis). Diseases of the respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, digestive organs, gynecological and andrological diseases, circulatory disorders.

Not everyone knows that there is a free source in Saturnia that can be visited at any time of the day or night. In this place, they don't even pay for parking a car. The news of this was passed by word of mouth, which led to the flow of foreign tourists. The spring near the old mill is literally besieged by hordes of people, especially in summer. Finding a spot in one of the limestone troughs of the waterfall is a real lottery. But it doesn't matter: the thermal spring near the mill is a river of mineral water and you can always find a comfortable trough in the riverbed, turn right sideways to the current and enjoy the freshness of the stream.

One of the most lucrative professions in Italy today is to become a farmer and grow organic products on your farm: every year the demand for organic products increases, and prices continue to rise.

If you are thinking about how to open a farm in Italy, you want to know whether it is difficult to work on your own farm in Italy and whether it is worth investing money in this business at all, read this material.

In this guide, we will talk about how to start a farm from scratch, what documents are required, what requirements must be followed, what are the costs and bureaucratic aspects, what is the opening procedure, and much more.

Open a farm in Italy from scratch

You can start any business in Italy from scratch if you have the desire and initial capital. But it is by far the best, if you have no experience, to learn as much as possible about farming in Italy, as well as learn the basics of successful business in general.

It is a mistake to open such a business without preparation, if you have never worked on the land and do not understand the roles of the various farm workers, how many workers are needed to maintain it, what tools and tools are needed to work, what are the management costs and what are possible benefits.

The best way, if you are young and adventurous, is to do an internship at an existing farm or agritourism first. This will give you everything you need to know to work in this area. You can also estimate how many hectares of land you are ready - physically, mentally and financially - to cultivate at the initial stage (the number of hectares also depends on the harvest and the type of activity that you intend to start. For example, if you decide to open an apiary, it will be enough for you to purchase small plot of land).

Required documents

Starting a farm in Italy from a bureaucratic point of view is not much different from starting other business activities. Whether it's a large company or a small family business, you need:

  • Get a VAT number;
  • Register activities with the Chamber of Commerce and the Register of Enterprises;
  • Register with INPS and INAIL to pay contributions.

Depending on the activity you intend to open, an ASL sanitary permit may also be required.

Minimum Requirements

To start a business and therefore become an agricultural entrepreneur, you need to be an IAP (imprenditore agricolo professionale; professional agricultural entrepreneur as stipulated in Legislative Decree 99/2004), that is, a specialist proven to possess professional skills recognized in the Region.
