A knife is one of the most valuable items in the equipment of a tourist, traveler, explorer, hunter or fisherman. Quite often, not only comfort and performance of the assigned task, but also the life of a person who has fallen into unusual or extreme conditions, depends on its quality and ability to use it.
The classic knife for survival in the military sense of the word (scout knife, special forces knife, army knife) is a blade connected to a hollow handle, into which various objects are placed that should help to survive in uninhabited areas in conditions wildlife, or if necessary, avoid contact with other people.
Most often, the set of a hollow handle (there are various options) includes items such as a means for producing fire (lighter or flint), means for quickly purifying water to drinking level (tablets, potassium permanganate, etc.) , awl, needle (surgical or "gypsy" type), fishing line with hooks, etc.
At the same time, knives with a hollow handle cannot boast of sufficient strength precisely because of their handle. Such a handle is not integral with the blade and can fail at the most crucial moment.
At the same time, there is a "mitigating" circumstance - if a blade breaks under the influence of great stress in an ordinary knife, then in a knife with a hollow handle - the handle itself. With a blade and some effort, an experienced person can make himself another knife with a handle.
In addition, on the one hand, the presence of NAZ ("Wearable Emergency Stock") type "all-in-one" allows you to take one such knife and go into the jungle. On the other hand, if you lose it, you will lose all the tools for survival at once.
A more logical option is to use equipment and tools that are in different places (in pockets). In this case, the loss of one of the items entails inconvenience, but not a critical situation.
In addition, it should be noted that with the proper skill and experience, you can really survive with just one knife. In addition to this tool, I personally would advise you to have a roll of fishing line or thin and strong rope in your pocket. This is enough to survive in most extreme places on the planet. But let's take a closer look at the choice.
It is necessary that the knife has a blade length of 15-25 cm (selected individually, depending on personal preferences). A longer blade will become a burden, and a shorter one is too limited in use. It is desirable (but not necessary) for the knife to be double-edged, but on one of the blades there is a serrator (like a saw). Of course, it takes more time for maintenance and does not sharpen well in field conditions, but it cuts various materials well and is quite effective in self-defense.
As for the blade thickness, it is better if it is within 4 - 6 mm. A thinner blade is unable to withstand high loads, and a thicker one will add weight and will not be able to perform some operations that require delicate calculation. It is also necessary to ensure that the knife edge is strong enough and does not break off during the first use.
The best option for connecting the blade and the handle is considered to be a rider one - when the blade shank is mounted on a finished solid piece of processed wood or durable plastic. It is desirable to have a guard or limiter, as well as a recess for one or more fingers. Also, do not take a round handle - it must be oval, in which case the blade will not turn in your hand. On the other hand, I prefer full shank knives.
I look forward to a reaction from readers to the term "tactical knife" in advance. Initially, it meant the weapons and equipment of tactical groups, and then marketers took this concept much wider. In addition to tactical carbines and knives, there are mugs, underpants, and even tactical toilet paper. But if we put aside this funny situation, then the knife that will be discussed is actually willingly bought by the American military for their money
The SRK knife is available in two versions - budget and expensive. In the first case, Japanese SK-5 Carbon Steel is used to make the blade. Its main advantage is its low price and ease of processing. But at the same time, it is distinguished by good wear resistance, great impact strength and ductility, it is very easy and quick to sharpen. The downside of this steel is that it is very susceptible to corrosion. Therefore, a protective coating is usually applied to the blade.
In the second case, for the manufacture of the blade, a laminate is used, the central layer of which is Japanese VG-10 stainless steel, the covers are made of relatively soft stainless steel. Due to this, the knife has an excellent balance between the strength of the blade, which is provided by the covers, and the aggressive cut due to the VG10 core. The latter is characterized by good wear resistance, good ductility and toughness. The knife is just as easy to sharpen. Well, of course, the corrosion resistance is very high. Well, the difference in the used steels provides the difference in price by almost three times.
The most powerful blade 155 mm long and 5.5 mm thick butt is formed by flat slopes from about ½ of the blade width. On the so-called pike, a narrow false blade is made, extending to the edge of the blade. As a result, despite the thick butt, the knife stabs pretty well. At the same time, the edge of the blade is strong enough to be used for breaking something without much hesitation.
The knife is, as expected, thickly reduced to 0.8 mm at the heel of the blade, to about 1. mm at the point. The sharpening angle is 20 degrees per side, that is, 40 degrees full angle. This is quite logical if you remember how the knife is positioned. It is a powerful and versatile tool. The main task of which is to withstand any loads and solve any problems arising in the campaign from its owner.
He chops perfectly, without straining to split thick enough poles using the batoning method, ripping open cans or zinc cannot damage it, only at best they will scratch the protective coating of the blade, it can be driven into a crack in the rock and stand confidently on him. Another question is why do this?
But the ability to cut well, obviously not about SRK. A thick butt and flattening indicate that this is a crowbar with a cutting function, so if you plan to perform some household tasks, you will need to acquire a second knife. Of course, with the help of SRK, you can shred bread, rip open a can, slide it over the coals, and then pick out the hot contents with it. But doing something more is simply not convenient, peeling potatoes turns into an interesting quest.
The mighty shank of the blade runs through the entire handle, made of fused Kraton synthetic rubber. The material is very pleasant to the touch, moderately rough, tenacious. For better grip of the knife, anti-slip nature is made on the sidewalls of the handle.
In the foreign legal field, SRK is sold with a full-fledged sub-finger stop that reliably protects fingers from injury during work. In the Russian version, the emphasis is ruthlessly cut off almost completely. But the remaining stub is very confident in holding the hand. In the tail of the handle there is a lanyard hole, decorated with a flared tube. The presence of a lanyard is completely superfluous, since, when chopping, the knife strives to fly out of the hand. And in order not to look for him later in the bushes, it is better to take care of the lanyard in advance.

Kizlyar Supreme is a relatively young, but already well-known company. It produces knives for various purposes and for a wide variety of wallets. Initially, the company specialized in the so-called "tactical knives", but gradually very interesting models appeared in the range, suitable for use by tourists, hunters and fishermen.
Today we will talk about a non-standard knife, which immediately stands out from the range of tourist knives of the company, and not only by its size, but also by its shape. This is a Sensei lager knife made in the shape of an American tanto.
For the manufacture of the blade, an old, but no less popular with manufacturers, tool steel D2 was chosen. It contains 1.55% carbon, which provides a good cut, and 11-13% chromium, which partially protects against the formation of foci of corrosion. Steel cannot be classified as stainless, it copes well with corrosion, but a little maintenance will be necessary. Nothing fancy, just rinse the knife after work and wipe it dry. No additional lubrication is required. In field conditions, it is enough to wipe the knife on the sleeve of the jacket or on the trouser leg.
This steel is characterized by an aggressive cut, good ductility, although a thin cutting edge does not like excessive loads and gives chips. D2 is fairly easy to dress with ceramic abrasive stones without requiring the purchase of expensive diamond honors. In the field, the sharpness of the knife can be improved with waterproof sandpaper. For quick dressing, ceramic mousse is suitable.
In general, using highly hardened steel on a knife that is designed for shock loads is not the best option. And on the first generation of Sensei, there were problems with breaking the cutting edge of the knife when chopping blows in the cold. But after that, the company changed the heat treatment process to increase the toughness of the steel, while reducing its brittleness. And this problem disappeared.
A powerful blade with a length of 220 mm and a load of 4.6 mm thick, formed by high, slightly concave slopes 2/3 of the width of the blade. A long and narrow false blade is made from the butt side. The name of the manufacturer, knife model and steel grade are printed on the blade of the blade. The knife is moderately reduced to 0.6 mm at the heel of the blade and about 0.8 mm at the point. The sharpening angle is standard for knives of this class - 40 degrees. Sharpening, aggressive shaving.
In general, using it as a knife is rather strange, because Sensei feels like a powerful chopper, and it is. The knife cuts well, of course it will not replace an ax, but cutting a clearing to the river through the bushes, chopping down a pole, arranging a parking lot, chopping a dry log for kindling is his niche, and the knife does an excellent job with this work. By the way, loafing with a knife is a nice thing, the knife is driven into a log in one fell swoop to the height of the slopes, therefore it gets stuck a little, and with the next blow it breaks the pole to the end. Given the length of the blade, large enough logs can be chopped.
You can use it as a knife, but not very convenient, the linear dimensions of the blade and the thickness of the butt are frankly interfered with. In case of urgent need, of course, you can chop the sausages into a sandwich with bread, open a can. But it will be quite difficult to cook anything sane. But the knife is not a kitchen knife either.
Imagine that you are in an emergency when something threatens your life and health. What is the best survival knife to carry with you in this case? Honestly, you would love ANY knife. However, if you are reading this article now, then you have a habit of thinking about the future and planning ahead. And a hypothetical emergency is unlikely to catch you off guard with empty pockets. Moreover, you will most likely not have an old rusty pocket knife with you, but something more serious.
We all have our own personal preferences for what a good camping knife means. And in an extreme situation, you certainly would like to get the best possible option. Therefore, in this article we will try to compile a list of the best survival knives so that you can choose the most suitable one for yourself.
But first, let's talk a little about ...
A survival knife is a versatile tool designed both for everyday outdoor use and for use in real conditions of survival in the wild (which, in fact, says its name). It should be suitable for most camp work, including setting up a shelter, making a fire, cooking, making various traps, digging the ground, and much more. In addition, it must be suitable for self-defense and hunting (nominally, for picking up wounded animals and cutting them up).
Generally speaking, a fixed blade fulltang shank is a much better choice as a survival knife than a knife with a thrust shank or, even more so, a folder. Indeed, due to its versatility, a survival knife can experience very serious stresses that can disable a folding knife or lead to a thin shank break in a light fixed.
Below we will consider several important points that should be taken into account when choosing a knife for survival, because they determine its convenience, reliability and versatility in the wild. For your convenience, we have made a list with links for quick navigation:
When choosing a survival knife for yourself, it is worth remembering what exactly it is intended for. After all, being alone with the wild nature, you will have to use it to the maximum, and in this case, such a factor as the shape of the blade plays an important role.
Among the currently numerous forms and variations of blades, it is worth giving preference to three, namely - clip-point, spirit-point and drop-point. The reason for this is the location of the level of the point close to the median (conditional) line of the blade, which improves the control of the knife and, as a result, its versatility.
In these parameters, knives with clip, spir and drop-point are superior to knives with a straight butt, not to mention other types of blade action.
