Hiking in Kabardino-Balkaria

ⓘ Tourism in Kabardino-Balkaria

Tourism in Kabardino-Balkaria is a part of tourism in Russia on the territory of the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.

State management of tourism in the republic is carried out by the Ministry of Sports, Tourism and Resorts of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.

History of tourism development in Kabardino-Balkaria

The mountainous region of the Elbrus region in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic since the 1950s has been a popular destination among Russian and foreign skiers, as well as climbers who are interested in climbing Mount Elbrus, which is considered the highest mountain peak in Russia and Europe.

On September 22, 1986, in order to preserve the unique natural complex of the Elbrus region and create conditions for the development of organized recreation, tourism and mountaineering, the Elbrus National Park was formed. There are 23 recreational facilities on the territory of the national park, where about 5 thousand people can rest during the season. Planned tourism is mainly carried out under the auspices of the Elbrus Council for Tourism and Excursions. Excursions are conducted along 16 thematic routes. The main objects of bus excursions are Polyana Narzanov and also - Narzan Valley hiking), Cheget and Elbrus mountains.

In 2009, 173 thousand tourists visited Kabardino-Balkaria, of which more than 50 thousand people visited the republic on one-day excursions from the Caucasian Mineral Waters.

December 2, 2010 in accordance with the decree of the government of the Russian Federation of October 14, 2010 No. No. 833 "On the creation of a tourist cluster in the North Caucasian Federal District, Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea" JSC "Resorts of the North Caucasus" was created to manage special economic zones of tourist and recreational type, including in the territories of the Cherek, Chegem and Elbrus districts of Kabardino -Balkar Republic.

According to the decree of the government of the Russian Federation No. 1195 of December 29, 2011 "On special economic zones in the North Caucasus Federal District", the boundaries of the previously created special economic zone in Kabardino-Balkaria were expanded, including at the expense of the Zolsky district of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.

In 2014, under the management of JSC "Resorts of the North Caucasus", the modernization of the resort "Elbrus" and the bringing of the ski infrastructure in line with modern standards began. Priority measures implemented as part of the arrangement of ski slopes for the 2014/2015 season included leveling ski areas, dismantling old structures and structures, creating drainage channels on the slopes, expanding existing slopes and installing additional barrier elements. The result of this work was a sharp increase in the tourist flow in the Elbrus region: during the 2014/2015 winter season, 140 thousand ski passes were sold here - more than in the entire 2014. The results of a sociological survey conducted by JSC "Resorts of the North Caucasus" in the Elbrus region in February 2015 showed that 94% of respondents want to return to the resort next season.

In 2015, North Caucasus Resorts JSC invested about one billion rubles in the further renovation of the popular resort. The funds were directed to the construction of the third stage of the cable car "Station Mir" - "Station Gara-Bashi" to the mark of 3 847 meters, laying and arrangement of routes. The cable car on Elbrus has become the highest mountainous one, which has no analogues in Russia and Europe; the lift also provides free access to the highest ski area in Europe. In 2016, the third section of the cable car from "Station Mir" to "Station Gara-Bashi" was included in the "Book of records of Russia" as "The highest cable car in Russia".

By Resolutions of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 980 of September 29, 2016, the territory of the special economic zone in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic was reduced by excluding the Cherek and Chegem regions of the republic from the special economic zone.

The Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve is “a place in the sky itself”. On the territory of the Russian Federation, the giant Elbrus lies at the same level (by the way, also in Kabardino-Balkaria). Moreover, the ban is also the highest in the whole of Europe. Therefore, you already have a reason to conquer its peaks, or at least special (not strictly guarded) territories equipped for the most ordinary guests.

Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve on the map of Russia

The strict part of the protected areas lies within the Bezengi wall and adjacent mountains - "five thousand meters". Only at the junction with the Georgian NP "Racha Lechkhumi" the border ends at "three thousand meters". The rivers of the Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve are represented only by their extreme upper reaches. The GB buffer is very narrow (fragments of slopes adjoining from below along the entire contour). The area of the strictly protected cluster is 82,642 hectares. In fact, this is the size of a large city.

The central estate of the institution is located in the village of Kashkatau (Cherek district of the KBR), on Kezim Mechiev street, in building 78. The Nalchik-Upper Balkaria highway (A-154) leads to the village. The one that passes the thermal springs of Aushiger, Blue Lakes, Babugent and the City of the Dead (in Upper Balkaria). Kashkatau lies in front of Babugent.

The Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain State Natural Biosphere Reserve was founded in 1976. Its areas and borders have changed many times. Now it is divided into 5 forestries (according to the number of all valleys included in the forbidden zone, about them below).

Goals and objectives

All activities of the Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve are focused on:

  • protection of the high-mountainous area entrusted to him from anthropogenic influence;
  • scientific activities (research of the designated biocenosis and the development of new methods of competent nature management within protected areas);
  • state monitoring (taking into account all changes in local populations);
  • educational work (with tourists, with schoolchildren, with the media).

Terrain and climate

The nature of the Kabardino-Balkarian Mountain Reserve has an upper, middle and lower climatic variety. On the 3rd floor, the climate is arctic, on the 2nd - subarctic (alpine), and on the 1st (2,000 - 1,800 meters above sea level) - cold-temperate. The first two are characterized by the strongest winds and summer temperatures close to zero (in winter, the thermometer can drop to 50 negative degrees at the peaks). In order not to get numb, you need to make your way here in April or later. We need to be afraid of avalanches. The cold-temperate zone in July-August boasts a positive temperature of 18-25 degrees. And in winter it is no colder than 30 degrees below zero. The rains are already reaching here (but only from the clouds of the second layer). And the humidity is normal everywhere.

The relief is mountainous. The Russian Bezengi Wall and the Lateral Ridge include these peaks:

  • Dykhtau (5 204);
  • Koshtantau (5 152)
  • Shkhara (5 068);
  • Dzhangitau (5 058);
  • East Dzhangitau (5 033);
  • Gestola (4 859);
  • Katyntau (4 859).

The western ridge adjacent to the Bokovoy is ready to boast of the Salyngantau (4,510) and Tyutyurgyu (4,242) peaks. The eastern spur has Pushkin Peak (5,047), Musostau (4,421) and Mizhirgi (4,928). The so-called Sukan Alps lie between Cherek Balkarsky and Urukh (border with Georgia). Their dominant hill is Sukan (4,487). From here, spurs with marks Gyulchi (4 477) and Sabalakh (3 616) adjoin directly to the state border. There are also several lower points of the ridge. The reserve includes the initial (upper) sections of 7 gorges (see the section on rivers). The whole belt is nival. Geological formations are composed of gneisses, shales and granites.

The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic is known far beyond the borders of Russia as the center of mountaineering, tourism and skiing in the North Caucasus. The famous Bezengi alpine camp is located on the territory. The ski slopes are not inferior to the alpine bases. Thermal springs, mineral waters and a unique mountain climate have turned the region into a popular resort.

The Rocky Range is a series of picturesque rocky peaks and short ridges running northwards parallel to the Main Caucasus Range. The mountains here are cuestas - asymmetric ridges that slope gently to the north and drop abruptly to the south. We will see landscapes reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The rocky ridge is so called because the southern steep part of the ridge is formed by an impressive belt of giant bastions, rocky walls and layered weathered rocks - and on our hike we will just pass near them. We will see the remains of ancient Balkar fortified settlements, defensive towers, crypts, get acquainted with the customs and cuisine of the Ossetians. Perhaps we will meet with shepherds and see semi-wild herds of horses and yaks. We will pass through deep gorges of turbulent mountain rivers. But the main attraction of this hike is the many beautiful rocks! We are sure that you will remember the main mountains on the route for a long time: the crown of Mehtygen, the “whale” of Khaznibashi, the “wolf howling at the moon” Borovceg and the “Ossetian tower” Uaza-Khokh. We will pass from Balkaria to North Ossetia, descend into the famous Digorskoye gorge and visit the city of the dead Donifars, and on the way back to Nalchik we will have time to soak up the thermal springs of Aushiger.

Many travelers begin their first ascent of Elbrus along this route - in the summer-autumn period, from the South to the Western Summit (5642 m). An exciting 11-day hike to the highest point of Russia and Europe with a comfortable acclimatization program. The advantage of the route is the availability for tourists of the usual level of physical training. All the way through the most picturesque places in the very heart of the Caucasus we go with moderate loads, small backpacks and a charge to win. We get pleasure from a real camp life - we spend the night in tent camps and an alpine mountaineering shelter. In these places, time stops, the worldview is revised, and the soul finds the long-awaited balance. The conquest of the peak of the cosmic beauty of Elbrus is a personal achievement that you will be proud of.
